Don't mention the "F" word (and this is not the "F" word you think it is)!

My mother and I were talking tonight and when I mentioned a certain word in front of her, she nearly had a heart attack. Please read all of this before posting! I was picturing a conversation with my boyfriend when after this word was mentioned. Here is how the conversation would go: Me: Don't mention the "F" word in front of my mother! My boyfriend: What "food"? "F**k you!"? Me: No! "Furlough". My boyfriend: Why? Me: Because, she is afraid that her boss is going make her take a furlough day. Yes, the evil "F" word is "Furlough"! This is the word that is the root of all evil for state and county employees, and sadly this word is affecting many people. When I even mention the possibility of her having to take one, she was hysterical. She kept saying "Shut up! Don't you dare say that! That word is forbidden in this family!" So, is anyone else here afraid of the "F" word?

That's funny, LOL. There was this one moment when this guy kept speaking with me and mentioning what the F you, what F this, what the F that. I got fed up hearing it and saying that I get his point of vulgarity. In which he replied to me that 'no, all along I was saying Fish'. I still don't get the joke up till now, ha.

Yeah, I thought this would make everyone laugh. I know how people feel about certain things right now, and to think that a word like this could stir up so much trouble. I wonder what would of happened if I told her the "FR" word: "Forced Retirement"!

Fr indeed~ I think most people have already programmed it in their heads and to be wary of whenever they see the F alphabet being used. I shall remember never to put my future child's name with F ever..

My Job is secured and I don't need to get scared to listen to this word. It will not bother me, I know many people are being furloughed and one of my friends is there. I wish he gets his Job very soon.

hi rogue my best friend is also as they have been talking about making some employees take a furlough day, and she just'dreads it. doesnt seem fair to me, as she works at a decapitation center for health insurances and is on the phone all day. they are not state or county employees either just a company that like so many have had to lay off a few employees. Her job is secure as she has been told that, she is older than the rest but oneof their best employees.

Did I read that right? Did you say "a Decapitation Center for Health Insurances"? Sounds like a fun job. Yes, some companies are going through this as well, this is not just state and county employees, and some places are just laying off people all together because they really cannot afford to keep anyone. Now, my mother is not going to get laid off because she has had 30+ years with the county, but they can still make her take a furlough day if they want her to take one. They are not giving her any holiday time, and they are not letting her work weekends like she used to do.

I know that at one point I knew what the word 'Furlough' meant. Of course the definition has slipped away from me..So I had to quickly Wiki it. LOL. A furlough would definitely be a disappointment for me - of course. After all, it's an unpaid vacation - and that's the worst kind to have! I'm lucky enough that I'm not working at a job or position that would "furlough" me - unless they just plain sacked me and found someone to replace me with (Hopefully that is NEVER the case, though!) I think the word 'Furlough' goes up on the list with D for Divorce and F for Fired.

Yes, it does, and my mother was ready to rip me a new one when I mentioned this word to her. I could not believe it. My mother never gets fired up about things, but when I mentioned this, she went insane.

No but I can totally see where she is coming from. These times are very nerve-wracking for middle class families with all the job cuts and even if you get to keep your job, forced furloughs are hugely impactful on your ability to financially take care of your family. I personally work(ed) in the private sector and in my last company we didn't have furloughs to worry about but the equivalent in the private sector which was to take a pay cut for a limited period when things get rough.

My mother is not going to lose her job because she had 30+ years with the county and they need her very badly, but they might make her take furlough days because times are hard and she does not want to do that, especially because I am losing my health care insurance (I tell her that I will pay for it, but she won't have it) and she wants to retire when she is 70.
