A friend of mine belongs to the Monsonic Lodge in my old home town. I look for any event or reason to stop by my old town. She said they were raising funds for a good cause and having a "Chinese" Auction which is an auction where people and businesses donate stuff and you buy tickets. You write your name on the back of the tickets. They put a bowl, basket, cup or paper bag (last one in this case) with the name of the item on the container or the number (in this case the last one). You put your ticket in the receptical. Later on, they draw a ticket and that person wins. This place was sooo cool. They had about 44 silent auction items and about 20 door prizes. I bought tickets. The deal was 8 tickets for $5.00. Normally only 6 for 5, but these are hard times and I notice they're (organizations in general) giving people more chances lately to encourage people to spend money. They started picking for door prizes. I was the third one picked. They let us pick what we wanted so getting picked toward the beginning was great! I picked a 20$ gift certificate for a food store-Yando's Big M. I'm sooo happy. Then the silent auction happened. Time after time, they named people off and it wasn't me. I had gone around last and put my ticket in bags that only had one to three,4, or 5 tickets in (that's my winning strategy, got all my X-mas presents for my family that way one year). So I sat and waited. Time and time again, they called other people. Ok, no big deal, they were the prizes with tons of tickets in. So patiently waited for the not-so-popular items. Here's one where I have a 50% chance. Went to someone else. Here's one where I have a 33.33% chance, went to someone else. 20%, to someone else. Another 33, nope, someone else. Another 50% and my name, yeah! Two beer steins from the Antique and Variety Mall. All right! At the end, I learned that they raise money for a Nursing Home and for a grant for one person each year who is down on his or her luck. Glad I donated. So my questions to you are: Have you been to any fun raisers lately? Have you been to someplace new (Monsonic Lodge was new to me)? Have you participated in any charity auctions? Have you ever won anything neat? Do you have a strategy or do you just bid on what you like? Anything else that is pertinent is fine.

I pretty much bid on what I like, but I once won a beautiful silk flower arrangement from a place that just opened (gave it to my boss for her birthday or Christmas) Normally I don't win anything, tho I did win $300 worth of prizes from a contest once - got $100 gift certificate for a local food store - and we needed food really bad right then! we were LITERALLY down to a package of chicken (probably some noodles or rice, but not much to go with)

Wow! How wonderful to win $100 for food! $300 in total prizes is amazing, too. We have food, but not the low salt stuff. I've been foraging and buying one item a week plus people have been giving me squash, so it has been rough. I feel like with $20 and my other sources, this week, I'll actually be able to eat. I took $10 from the change I received from the yard sale we had. So finally money making money, Yee-haw!

YEAH!!! money making money and what money you spent went to a good cause! The other part of the $300 were 100 in records at a record store and 100 in tickets to the place having the contest

A hundred in tickets to a place having the contest. Wow! That's a lot.

Sounds like you had a good time at the auction. It's been almost a year since I've been to a fundraiser. It was so much fun since it was trivia and a silent auction. I know nothing when it comes to trivia except am well versed about 60's music and the artists. We had 5 couples at our table which we knew so the laughs were "on." The fundraiser was for a local softball organization and is always very profitable. I bid on the neatest carrying bag, some would call it a huge purse, where photos can be stored on the front and back and got it. As far as any kind of drawings are concerned, I don't do well on those. Haven't been to a Masonic Lodge ever that I can recall. We won't be able to attend this year's fundraiser since our grandbaby is having a birthday party the same afternoon/evening. I should say her mom and dad are having the party since she will be 1 yr. old.

Sounds like you had lots of fun, too. Bet the party for the one year old will be even more fun. Strange how many different things go on in one day, huh?

I guess I would have to answer NO, to most of your questions! The two Fundraisers that I religiously participate in; The Terry Fox Run (financially) for Cancer Research (now held globally)~~~He had lost his leg to Cancer, started a Run across Canada....and LOST HIS LIFE, in the middle of this run, when the Cancer spread to his lungs. We have an 85 year old gentleman, here on the Island that particpates every year...and I add my sponsorship to him! Many years ago, (when I first arrived on the Island) we had a Public Refuse Dump, where hundreds of "terribly diseased" Feral Cats lived, and ate. The Dump, was covered with soil, thus dispersing the Feral Cats. A wonderful Lady here, started a "haven" for these cats, called GAIN (Galiano Animals In Need)! Out of her own pocket, she bought "live traps", which we borrow when a Feral Cat is around! She takes them in (many times she has over 100) diseased & malnutrioned! The local Vet then treats them, and neuters. At very little cost. Joanna, the cat lady, has fund raisers (as you can imagine her outlay)...like Meat Draws, Bingo, PAWs Walks, etc....I support her fully! Meat Draws~~~everyone around me wins! Bingo~~everyone around me wins! So, I tell everyone, if they wish to win, let me sit beside them..I'm a guaranteed loser...so they will definitely WIN! LOL! I can't even get more than 2 #'s on our many Lotteries! Have to be content with being a winner in Life. Have a banner day...and Cheers!

Thank you, for remembering Terry Fox...what a wonderful, brave soul...a lesson in life to all of us! We now have many, many things/places around the Vancouver area named in his memory...including a mountain (as he was a mountain of a gentleman.) I truly wished there was a way of controlling humans, and their disregard for our furry friends! A lot of cats are lost or abandoned here when the folks from Vancouver come to their "Island" retreats, but they are amazing creatures with a true will to survive! Feral cats biggest enemy here is the Eagle! Have a wonderful day...and cheers!

I remember Terry Fox. His story and he were on our local news because we're so close to Canada and my area is a serious hot spot for cancer. We have a Feral fund that is much like what that lady does. Our Feral Cat Fund is suffering. Used to have a lot of money per month, but not now with this economy. Need to find some way to have cats earn their food, not sure how, but working on some ideas.

I thought it was so sad that Terry lost his battle with cancer and before the run was done. We all wanted him to make it.
