Do you hear when you are listening to?? email this discussion to a friend?

Hi my lotter friends,

Just curious, do you hear or listen when things come to listening. Suppose you are listening a number are you totally taken into it or you have the other ear to hear too.

The general and common thing is that you are not supposed to hear anything when you are listening to something.

What is your take on this?

I can listen to music and hear someone talking at the same time; if that's what you mean. But to "hear" and to "listen" are very different things. We hear a lot of things; listening takes paying attention and actually registering what you're hearing. For example, in Chemistry class, I would HEAR my teachers' lectures but because I wasn't interested and didn't care about it, it would go in one ear and right out the other.

Hi maeze,

You are absolutely right. While listening is voluntary hearing is not. Hence on certain occasion we must listen to and those outside sounds be ignored. Or else there is no difference nor any problem.

lol I always listen never hear!!

Nice discussion! I would like to believe that I am the kindof person you listens. Listening hasa benewfit - the benefit of never getting to forget it. Of course, I do hearstuffsaroundme like someone yelling, honking, fighting over no issueat all. I tend to ignore. I think that should be it.

Hi mimpi,

Very praiseworthy a habit you have formed. That we often forget events or a piece of important advice that is only we are more inclined towards hearing than listening.

hi dada

frankly confessing, many a times i try to do both. while listening to something, if my concentration is broken by someone or something then tend to lend a part of my ear to that too. in a person to person conversation i apologise and ask the person to repeat when i am unable to follow but at other times i find it difficult to comprehend all that i missed. then i can do nothing but to repent.

well, hearing something while listening is dangerous at times, because things might get mixed up in th mind and create some 'chemical locha', i mean some misunderstanding.

Hi sis,

Yes there is nothing wrong in asking back second time as to who has said what to you. we tend to get tired of the day's work and might miss if a co passenger or a colleague is making some comment. Besides everything we hear are not worth listening.

Second thing we can in a relaxed mood do both listening and hearing. Might be you are listening a number and there was a bang near your place surely that would catch your little part of ear.

As a mother, I've learned to either focus in or focus out. Most of the time, when I'm listening to something, I give it my full attention. But, when my kids were young, I learned how to tune them out. They could be screaming and throwing a fit but, as long as I knew they weren't hurt and were just making noise to be heard, I'd ignore them and honestly didn't even hear them sometimes!

Even today, when I'm out shopping with my son and a baby is crying or screaming somewhere nearby, I tune it out and don't even hear it while it drives my son crazy. I think you have to be a parent to learn the fine art of tuning out anything you don't want to hear.

Yes, I do hear what I'm listening to. I'm just selective in what I listen to. thumbup

Hi there,

very true. Situation teaches us to become the sort of the person we were not. That you could tune it out was surely a developed characteristic. But I see sometime people more interested in hearing than listening.

I get a good percentage of it but not all. Concentration isn't very good.

myLot reputation of 90/100. krajibg (2494)   ranked 1 out of 1,751 in listener  2 months ago

Hi celti,

This is not all about concentration that you listen to something. undoubtedly you have to put a little bit more pressure on your brain for listening is a voluntary act and it stores data more than mere hearing.

I hope I am not incorrect.

myLot reputation of 97/100. celticeagle (4866)   ranked 247 out of 1,751 in listener  2 months ago

Yes, it is a voluntary act but you can't really hear without concentrating.

for me .. hearing is not listening but listening is hearing ..

when i am listening to something, meaning it is absorbed into my brains when i hear them

But when i am only hearing someting, it just flows in and out, as my dad always says it enters one ears and comes out the other without making a stop at my brains for absorbtion

cheers

Hi sanjana,

I am afraid you got confused somewhere. Hearing and listening - though come under the same category the function diffidently. Hearing is what we perceive the sounds in the environment with intent or without, but when it comes to listening you must not ramble your thought. This is a voluntary act.

Some people have the ability to focus on the one thing and listen to that intently and shut off everything else; my husband does that all the time when he watches T.V.; you have to tap him on the shoulder to get his attention otherwise you can talk all night only to have him turn around and say, “Whaaat?”

I can’t really do that; maybe it is the mother in me who listens to what’s going on but always has one ear out for the children.

True listening is an art that not too many people practice especially when it comes to paying attention to one another!

Hi paula,

You are quite right. Some people are more concentrating be it in watching or listening while some other like you lol can manage both. Yes I too feel to a certain degree we can manage booth listening and hearing. But in rather serious matter when you are demanded of your ear you have to be voluntary, I mean you must listen to and not allowed to hear only for you have to give feedback.

Hi Raju,

That is correct. When you are demanded you have to listen or else you can manage just hearing. lol

Hello my friend krajibg Ji,
I think, you are talking about concentration. If one listens properly then only one will not hear from any of one's ear. In another way, if one is hearing, one may not be able to listen. It all depends upon how one is serious and how subject is that much important to one. But i still think, there may be a scientific reason behind both, even one remains fully involved and in concentrate with topic.
May God bless You an dhave a great time. thumbup

Hello Jee,

Not exactly concentration but in round about way it comes under the same roof. I was trying rather to differentiate the act of listening from hearing. People are there who are more on the listening as and when required but some others are not. My point was while hearing is involuntary act, listening is a voluntary one.

Yes you can call this voluntary act as concentration.

myLot reputation of 85/100. maygodblessu44 (2571)   ranked 263 out of 1,751 in listener  2 months ago

Hello my friend krajibg Ji,
I like your comments. But I am only saying that, listening ajs to be attentive like we listen to oparents, teacher and for taht matter, wherever one wants to gain knowledge, whereas hearing there is no such clause otr binding, at present, I am hearing many mixed up noses coming out from adjecent school, I do not pay any attention, if required to repeat same, I amy never be able to do. But, in case there is some thing diverting my attention, I will try and listen and my mind has to pay attention and tehn I can remember. We hear many planes taking off as I am living same locality, but we just do not bother time/type of planes.
May God bless You and have a great time. thumbup
