I am getting a spinal injection today |
|
I have a chronic pain problem, part of which is due to ruptured discs in my neck and back and nerve damage. Last month I got a spinal injection in my lower back, it hurt like hell and left me crippled for three days. Then I started to feel better, the pain shooting up from my heel and the pain going down my back to my leg eased up. Well it wore off, and for three days I have been in agony. I am off to get another spinal injection in a few minutes and I am scared, I'm scared of how much it will hurt both during the procedure and afterwards. Have you ever had this procedure done? Do you have any suggestions for aftercare that may ease my suffering?
I still have to care for my young children no matter how badly I feel.

AngryKittyMSV (1864) | 3 months ago | It's the big one, Thea. I used to get the minor ones and they weren't too bad, they hurt but nothing like this one, the minor ones also stopped working for me. This if the big fat needle that punctures the sheath surrounding the spine.

thea09 (4327) | 3 months ago | That's what I thought. Take a rethink Kitty. I had one about 7 years ago in the top of my spine for herniated discs, done by an aneathatist and it worked for much longer than yours did, for two years in fact. When the problem reoccured I had a second surgery on the next disc which didn't work and at various times since I have practically begged for another epidural and no one in Greece is prepared to do them anymore as the risks are too great. Even the National pain centre in Athens would not do it, despite knowing the amount of pain involved. Long term they are dangerous and of course mask any further damage you may be doing. I still wanted it though until finally this year I met an American doctor who I would trust with my life and he told me never to have another one, they weaken the discs and nerves still further. It is unbelievable but after 2 operations, epilepsy tablets to numb the nerves, intensive traction, practically everything you can think of, he has sorted me so that by working on my spine every day the pain has gone for the first time ever, and this is since this Easter. It's not a fluke but it's hard work with slow intensive stretching exercises to strenghten the spine. Also he started me on a mega dose of ibrupofen to kick start the nerve endings into being in a position to fight. It was 3 x 600 mg for 3 days which believe me makes you feel real bad but after that you reduce to 3 x 200 every day. I'm sure you'll go ahead tomorrow, I certainly would in your position, but be aware you cannot keep having this treatment or it will cause damage, so take the shot, I know, 15 mins to go in, then start researching into somewhere you can get proper instruction on how to do the necessary exercise. I spend nearly an hour each morning on them and at first noticed my neck was stronger and then the whole back. I'll come back if you want to ask anything Kitty because I know how bad it is

2. Hatley (20628) | 3 months ago | hi angry kitten oh my that sounds really painful I am sorry you have to go through this. I hope it lasts longer today and the next few days so you will not suffer so much. I am wondering if you have a mom or step mom or aunt near by who could help you the next few days'with your young kids, or perhaps a visiting nurse if your insurance does this for you? I have a small hunch of nerve pain as I had shingles a year ago this summer and they lasted all summer, the nerve pain is what got to me, and no skin application stopped the pain, ibuprofin helped but most helful with the antiviral medication I was on. it felt allthe time like I was getting zapped with electric charges over and over. I hope to never go through that again.

5. cynthiann (3061) | 3 months ago | I am so sorry that you have to endure the pain of this horrible injection. My sister use to have then and she said that it hurt so very much. I read the other response and I think that you should try what the person said as it does make sense. I do hope that you can get some help with your children and do hope that you do get some kind of relief. I do not do pain well and I do not know how I would go through what you are suffering. May God take away your pain until you can start on the exercises that were recommended. Many blessings to you.

6. Chevee (3599) | 3 months ago | I wish there was something I could tell you to do to ease the pain but I have no knowledge of it. From what I know of these injections you should take it easy at least for the first 24 hours. So be very careful, if possible have your spouse or your parents or friends there to help you out. You have my prayers and I hope this condition gets better so that you will not have to have these injections. God Bless and take care.

7. opalina143 (655) | 3 months ago | Hey AK.
I"m really sorry I don't live close to you...I'd babysit the kids for free if I could.....
I don't know what to say, but I really hope it goes well. I have a friend who's a pastor, maybe I could ask him to add you to the church prayer chain? I'll just say "an online friend" or something like that. Couldn't hurt. I will try to send good thoughts and positive energy. Please keep us posted.

9. sparkofinsanity (3504) | 3 months ago | Oh Kitty! I feel for you, I really do. The discs in my lower back are disappearing and the pain is incredible most days. But I've never had to have an spinal injection, outside of the epideural they gave me when my oldest was born. I was in such shock from the labor pains and my body was shaking and convulsing so that the needle missed and .........well it was hell and to this day I won't let anyone near my back with a needle no matter how much pain I'm in. Some days I just want to shoot myself in the head. I have no magic fix for you other than cold compresses or heat if that makes you feel better. Everyone reacts differently. But my thoughts are with you........

10. Strongheart (1079) | 3 months ago | Aww Kitty, I'm sorry you have to go through this again. I understand about back pain though, I have been having trouble with my crushed disc and sciatica. It has got to where I have a sore spot on my hip continuously and it sends waves of hot, cold and fire down the top of my thigh. The worst though is when the sudden pains come in the side of my thigh like someone is plunging in a dull hot poker or screwdriver! I guess we're geting old now huh! LOL Hugs!
