In my opinion, cologne and perfume were the same in the sense of uses, since both gives fragrance. The difference is,cologne doesn't last longer than perfumes.Perfumes were concentrated ones that gives a longer fragrance and expensive perfumes(parfum)stays even after washing and ironing the clothes.

Women's perfumes were sweeter and lighter in scents while men's fragrances were stronger and musky.

Perfume and cologne are the same. They have the same sweet smell and has the same purpose. The only difference is perfume is more concentrated and more expensive. It normally comes in smaller bottles. A drop of perfume pat on our skin will linger on the whole day. While cologne is more diluted and less expensive. It comes in bigger bottles and is sprayed on the skin.

basicly the only differnces in the two are the concentration of the fragrent oil used to make them. A cologne is the weakest, most diluted form of a fragrence, then working the way up to the stongest, next comes eau de toilette, then eau de parfum (or perfume) and then the strongest, just plain parfum (perfume)
I beleive the reson that the thinking that perfumes are for women and colognes are for men comes from the reasoning that for the longest time, women were the most frequent users of scented products, and as men started using them as well...they usually picked more gentle, muted scents as opposed to strong scents that women wear.

I see. Now that explains it all. Just this morning I was thinking of starting a discussion to find out why it is called eau de toilette, but you have provided the answer here. I used to pronounce 'eau' 'eww' for some reason, lol. Till I met this French guy who totally did not understand what I was saying. After a while he realized I meant water in French and he told it is pronounced 'oww'. That was a bit weird.

i think perfumes have more intense smell than colognes...i mean clognes are probably lighter...so anything they maybe but both are pleasant..keep you fresh and feel fresh..so enjoy..
