Perhaps there are two faces to the solution.

As you mentioned, one is to get moving.

It seems the other side of the solution is to decrease calorie intake.
Perhaps it could also be about partly switching to acceptably filling and satisfying low-calorie food?

I know from experience just walking makes a difference. I injured my leg and gained 25 pounds while not able to walk. I've lost it since it has healed enough that I can walk instead of using a wheelchair

I would like to thank whoever invented the electric wheelchair. Now thousands of super sized huskies can claim a disability, and wheel all over the store while buying their food, and running everyone over.
