children with ADHD or ADD |
|
I have googled and reseached ADHD and ADD. As my 8 year old daughter was just diagnosed with it yesterday. I have talked it over with the doctor. I think i know what it is and what it isnt... I know the medical terms and the affects... But seriously for you out there that have children with ADHD or ADD or have it yorself, what is it? How does it affect everyday lifestyles.. what is the easiet way to cope with it? what has the most affect?
I need answers from those that have been there, not those who have studied it..
any input would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

1. bibbyboy12 (170) | 3 months ago | I have several friends with ADD and ADHD (my best friend who I have known for 10 years was diagnosed with ADD). It does affect your life in which you probably wont be able to concetrate in school or any activities that involve holding your attention for more than a few minutes. But if you get the proper medication you can't even tell that you have any type of learning disorder. My friend Joey takes Ritalin and he's more calm and focused than me (who doesnt have the disease). So yeah there really is no need to worry about your daughter because it is an easy disease to control.

2. nyhollyjean (330) | 3 months ago | Hi beutfulmama6701! I have a son who was diagnosed with ADHD many years ago, before they had a lot of the ways to cope with it like they do now. He is also profoundly deaf. So, just think about how much fun it was for me to have a child who was bouncing off the walls and not even be able to yell at him either! Well, I could still yell, but it wouldn't have made any difference. lol The way it was explained to me is that ADHD is considered to be a type of learning disorder. They don't really know what causes it, but that the signals to the brain "misfire". This causes them to not be able to maintain attention or focus for long--and they move around a lot or make noises or both. The difference between ADHD and ADD is mainly that hyperactivity is a big component of ADHD (the "H") part, that isn't found with people who have ADD--they mainly have the problem of not being able to keep their attention focused on one thing for very long. I was told to watch my child while he was watching TV and see how he behaved. Most children enjoy TV and will sit and watch a favorite program, or most of it. A child with ADHD will try to watch, but will fidget, bother other people or go on to other things, instead of watching the program. It's beyond their control to do anything about it, without some help, such as medication. However, depending on the person, the ADHD or ADD symptoms may lessen or go away altogether over time. That is what happened with my son. As he matured and learned ways of coping, the ADHD came to be less and less of a problem. In fact, by the time he became a teenager, it would take a crane to get him off the couch to do anything! As a parent, I know you must be worried about your daughter, but with medication and help and understanding from her parents and teachers, she will learn to handle it and so will you. They know a lot more about it now than when my son was young. I wish both of you well!

Before agreeing to give her any meds, please read up on them and the side effects etc. My daughter was suspected of having it several years ago. I personally didn't think she did but I did agree to have her tested. I took her to a regular psychiatrist ....independant from the school. I also did a lot of reading up on it. Many of the stories that I read from parents convinced me that if she did in fact have it.....the meds were out. I'm sure some kids really do have it but it seems to me that they diagnos many of these kids way too quickly. Well, it turned out that she did NOT have it. In fact she scored above average on all the tests. The doctor said it was because she was bored and the school was not giving her enough creative release.

blueeyedmommy03 (201) | 3 months ago | I agree. I have a nephew that was diagnosed with it after visiting with a doctor and he is such a good kid, come to find out he doesn't have it. Doctors really do act to quickly to diagnose children with ADD or ADHD. The way I see it is, its not a disease if they do have it, its mostly a behavioral thing. The medicines that they are giving these children are way to strong most of the time, they walk around in a daze. I have personally seen this myself, the medicine changes a child, and their a whole other person, its not normal one bit.

sid556 (10622) | 3 months ago | I think so too. There is so much strength in learning how to control behavior and it can be done. Back in the day...my brother would have been a poster child for AhDD. He could not shut up or sit still for the life of him. Back then, he just got reprimanded at school and at home. They did not diagnose kids like this and it was never considered to put them on meds. He learned to control himself and follow the rules. When he grew up,he went into the marine corps. There his IQ was tested and he scored borderline to genius. He is 52 now and very very active and yes...talks alot. Its what we love about him. He learned to channel all that energy into doing good things and creative things. I really have a problem with drugging these kids up in order to get them to behave.

apricotrains (405) | 3 months ago | My son was on medication from the moment he was diagnosed. Never once did he get 'dazed' out nor did he look drugged out. In fact when it came down to it, it didn't do a damn thing. When he was 15 we took him off his meds all together, no change, still the same hyperactive kid off them as he was on them.

5. christylynn (1894) | 3 months ago | My 9 year old has ADHD we have a lot of trouble and challenges in the beginning. With Adhd or ADD it has something to d with the singals in their brain which causes them to not be able to slow down it causes a lot of problems in school cause they have trouble follow directions and such and so was the case with my son. He is a very severe case of it and he requires medication for it I know a lot of people has problems about the medicine for adhd and add and not everyone that has it may necessarily have to take medicine that's something you need to talk with your doctor about but as for the case in my son he required medicine and I will say this he is as different as night and day when he is on his medicine of course the medicine is not to be used or thought of as a magic pill or whatever that in a sense that if the child takes it he/she wont have any problem you still have to discipline and things like that but when my son is on his medicine its much more better and easier to deal he still get's disciplined when he acts up and such but's it's more managalbe. Now I dont care for ratilin I think it's way too toxic but now there are all kinds of new medicine out there to treat this. like I said before Im not saying that every case require having to take medicine that's something that need to be discussed with the doctor but having this condition does not mean it's the end of the world they can still do things just like anyone else. Just like with my son he wants to learn to play the drums so that when he is old enough he can play in the youth group's band at church and he also said he wants to be a football player and I said go for it and I honestly and sincerely believe he can do it. It just means that with him he has to take medicine everyday and well there's a lot of people that have to for some reason or another but that doesnt mean that life stops it just means adjustments might have to be made that's all. I hope this helps and if you need to talk further Im here, ok. Good luck and God bless.

| 6. mneff2003 (16) | 3 months ago | Well first of all, you have to have patience, its going to be a long road. The first thing your doctor is going to tell you is to put her on meds. Which you can do but if you have the patience I suggest starting with exercise and diet changes. These things can make a huge change with her and then she won't have the side effects and long term effects of the drugs out there. Research Dr. Monastra. He is the ADHD doc and he is amazing. My little brother goes there and has changed dramatically since. Make sure you have a doctor do blood tests and brain scans to make sure that is infact ADHD as there is other illnesses out there that will make it look like ADHD. First thing is to cut out as much high fructose corn syrup as possible, go to an all organic diet. Try to give her lots of protein and work with her teachers to have her do the most important projects early in the day. Give her 1 serving of caffeine a day, chocolate or soda or something, in the morning to get her brain working properly. The more she can run the better she will be able to concentrate. Don't let the school take recess away from her, have the teachers watch and if she gets fitgity have them let her go to the gym and run a couple laps, have them provide her peanuts also as the protein will calm her down. There is a lot to learn I have been dealing with it now with my brother for 7 years just be careful of the meds and go to a specialist that deals with ADHD for the bio feedback brain scan. It is worth the cost to make sure it is in fact ADHD as the medicines have awful long term effects to the point of her never being able to have children when she is older or violent outbursts. These meds are commonly linked to drug users.
