Does she remember?

I'm watching my cat drink some water...and I just started thinking...
Does my cat remember when she didn't have water to drink?
I found my cat in November of 2004. She was outside my house--so thin I could see every rib, her spin, straight through her leg skin...she was days from death I'm convinced...
So, almost 5 years later, does she remember when she was lost outside? Does she remember how bad her life was before I got her?

I think animals in general are very intelligent creatures, and no doubt do remember there life as it was before someone like you who had the kindness to take her in and nurse her back to health. I can't help thinking how grateful pets may be say if they are in a shelter situation and they finally get their new forever home. On the negative side though, I know a few people who have adopted pets who had been previously abused and often remain timid at the slightest thing that happens to them...our Gabs adopted Gissi who was abused and despite all the love she showers Gissi, he still can get upset at times..so yes, animals do remember their "former" life whether good or bad. I had to give up a number of cats..it was either that or be evicted as my mother had created a population problem....I often wonder....do they remember me and the love I did give them?

I know some people worry about adopting previosuly abused pets because they are more likely to bite in defense, but that doesn't stop me. I want to get the most hurt ones and make them feel good about life again.
We had a dog named Mocha, we got her when she was a puppy--and she was abused before we got her. SO she was abused when she was just months old :( But she was the sweetest dog EVER. She was scared of everything (vacuum, doors, fans, etc) but she never showed fear towards any of us, and she never got aggressive in any way. I don't ever remember her even growling! She was a good girl.
I know how it feels to have to get rid of cats, if it had been my choice we wouldn't have but I still had to go through it. It really sucks and I understand how you feel.

Who can know the memory of an animal, let alone its "mind" at all? But I do bet, regardless of her "knowledge" the Love, trust, affection, kinship, security, etc., serves to remind her (in a sense) of her place with you.

Geez, you make me sound like a saint! :P hehe. But I would like to think I deserve some good things in my life. I got one with my cat, now I'm hoping for another in a new job.
Thank you :P

Well, Taj doesn't remember being outside, but he does remember not liking outside - he doesn't get as upset during thunderstorms as he used to, but he is still bothered by them - I don't think she remembers the specifics, but she may remember not liking it

I wonder how one could explain my Kissy. She's NEVER been an outdoor cat, yet the slightest rumble of thunder and she hides in my closet.

Supposedly, I read somewhere that they can remember (provided that part of their brain isn't affected by malnutrition)that they can remember up to a year. I don't know who figured it out or how they figured it out, but supposedly that's true.
But I know rescued dogs and cats that are still terrified by people or certain things for years or all their lives, so I wonder what they're basing it on.

Yeah! That's a good point!! Animals from abusive situations never forget it! They're always afraid of something because of what they went through. We had a dog that was abused as a puppy before we got her...she was afraid of EVERYTHING--the vaccum, doors, mops, etc...anything! But she was always happy with us :) She must have been able to tell the difference between her past life (which she obviously remembered) and her life with us.

Some animals can remember a lot of things that happened in there life just like people do but animals though intend to forgive and forget because all they really want is for someone to love them and look after them.

I am sure she still remembers her life while she was alone and hungry.she just concentrates on living at the moment.she is grateful that she belongs to a family now.she is grateful everyday.she is given a chance to live her life inside a warm, comfortable house, with food, water, and a family that loves her.

Yeah, animals are good at that...living in the moment and not letting anything that is currently happening bother them :) That's oen of the good things about them! I just can't imagine how much a sweet, small cat could have survived out in the wild alone for as long as she did (I know it had to be for a long time because she was in such bad shape). But I'm happy I found her! :)

November of 2004 must have been a good month, because that is the month that I met my husband. I'm glad your kitty found a wonderful new home, and has all the water she can possibly drink, and all the food she could possibly eat.

I don't think so,there are no studies if the cat still remember where she had been. I am not really sure about that. Maybe when a cat is happy they finally forget where they were before.
