Cops Need Help Too |
|
Soo...I little while ago I saw a video where a lone cop was wrestling with someone he pulled over...they had been wrestling for a while and the cop had been overpowered and was growing weaker.
A 'stringer' happened upon this scene...and he recorded it for a few seconds and I was thinking...what are you doing! go help him! Finally the guy put his video camera down, pulled out a gun and got the aggressor off the cop. Good for him!
It got me thinking about all the videos I've seen where no one helps a struggling lone cop. And all I can think is, how could you just stand by and ignore it?
If I happened by a scene like this... I wouldn't have a gun with me to threaten any perp, but I could very well surprise him and bodyslam him off the cop. And I know that would give the cop just enough time to get his gun out and stop the guy himself. It could be that easy!
So why not do it!??!

LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | He got all of it on video:) He set the camera down so it was still pointing at everything hehe.
You don't have to be a good fighter. I'm defeniatly not tough! lol I just know I'd have the upperhand because I could surprise the guy and give the cop enough time to get his gun.
There are some things I'm scared of, but I don't think I could ever just stand by and not help someone in need (cop or no cop).

LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | lol! I will pray that you're never in a situation like this either:P
And I'm with you on the gun thing...I dont like guns...Would never touch them in my regular life. But if I was ever in a situation where I had to grab one fast to protect myself or someone else I would hope I'd be able to.

| 3. lilmissy2ua (10) | 3 months ago | Hi LilyoftheThorns I agree with you totally. last night it was so funny because i saw this drunk guy at a store in my town n he seemed as though he had been drinking, as i looked out the window of the store i noticed that he was filling up his car with gas hmmm yes he was driving also, i also noticed he had 3 little kids in his car jumping around all over the back seat, im thinking to myself oh my god...so i told the lady at the store to call the cops when he left..as he got in his car and drove off i thought what can i do so i jumped in my car, before i knew it he was out on the hyway so i speed up n chase him i get behind him n in the mean time im thinking to myself hes going pretty fast where are the cops?? so im trying to stay behind him i decide to flash my lights for him to pull over ...as im doing this my heart is just pounding im so scared, so the guy stops n pulls over im on my cell i get out, n the guy gets out n says something wrong i said ya your drunk n the cops are on there way your not leaving anywhere ...n just as i am arguing the cops pull up thank god. So the cops talk to him n do a breathalizer hes not drunk they say we found out that he had had a stroke a while back n his speach is off. I felt so bad but i was worried about the kids n the cops thanked me n i said i felt so stupid and the cops said that they were glad that i called cause they gave him a fine for speading none of the kids were in seatbelts n they said better being safe then sorry! But i look at it like if he was drunk like we all thought he was he would have killed someone else plus those kids and himself i guess i was trying to save a tragety before it happened!!

|
|
LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Yeah, you shouldn't be embarrassed at all!
You did the right thing in that situation, and believe me cops are 'better safe than sorry' kind of people lol. No one would ever blame you for your actions.
And the man was still endangering the children by speeding, and to add insult to injury they weren't buckled up!
I would be a little unsure about getting out of my car, especially if I was alone-but I would think I'd follow someone in that situatoin too, and just stay on the phone with the cops and tell them to trace my cell phone until they found us lol.

|
|
writersedge (4401) | 3 months ago | After a stroke, he should be retested to be sure he can even drive. At the very least, his judgement is obviously questionable. If he gets enough tickets, he may loose his license. You had to protect those kids. Nothing to be embarrassed about. Speeding and no seatbelts on the kids, still had reasons to call the police. I've called some before.

LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Well I was basing this discussion on some video's I've watched in the past. In the most recent one the cop was defeniatly down but he was not out. If I managed to get the guy off him, even turn his sights on me-the cop would have jumped right up and been back on him.
Another video I was thinking of when I was typing up this discussion was one where a cop gets shot point blank in the head when he pulls someone over at night. When the cop collapses the guy gets out and keeps pulling the trigger, but thankfully his gun had jammed after that first shot...so the guy pistol whips him a couple times. Then he goes after the cops gun. Even after getting shot in the head and smacked with the gun this cop has the strength and ability to fight the guy off and stop him from getting the gun. The guy of course takes off after sometime...and the cop calls for help over his radio. Now, as far as I can tell DURING the altercation there was no one else around (it was night, not a lot of people out)...but when another cop finally gets there, there's another car parked on the side of the road opposite the cop, but he's still alone! He's on all fours, bleeding from the head, and whoever pulled over just sat in their car! If I came across a cop in obvious distress like that I would have to get out and see if I could help him.
I don't go looking for trouble, and I've never had anything like this happen in front of me. And I don't really plan on it, but no matter what I couldn't just stand by and watch. Maybe I would take a second to look for something I could use as a weapon, but if someone (cop or no cop) died because I didn't even try to help I would feel guilty forever.
I agree that no cop should be working alone...but I see it ALL the time--in the videos I watch and in real life. I'm always driving by cops without partners. I think ONCE I saw a cop car with two cops inside.

|
|
writersedge (4401) | 3 months ago | Yes, I do understand your points. Those cops must be in terrific shape and their adrenaline must be in the ceiling to be able to do what they do. They select the videos based on many things. A person who goes to help being raped or killed wouldn't be on a video.
I'm sure you don't go looking for a fight which is why you would be a credit to Martial Arts.
Don't get me wrong, I think you're right to help out. In NY State, it is illegal to NOT help a cop if you're in Criminal Justice. I still don't think they should ever be alone. I see them alone all the time, too, but I don't think it's right. I still think that with your way of thinking, that you should get some training.
I also hope that you've learned to see why some people don't. I've been in situations where people have stood in shock before they've responded. Nothing in real life was ever like what they saw before them. When I yelled/screamed at an inmate, only one time in 13 years in a state prison, the entire end of the building went deadly quiet, then people came running. Even the inmates sat paralyzed for a short period of time. Why? I was never loud at that job. So yelling or screaming was a shock to them. Also for me not to be able to handle a situation, they thought must be deep sh*t going down. It was nothing really except that I couldn't stand that inmate any more and if they didn't take him away, I was probably going to loose it and clobber him. So there are many scenarios to consider.

LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Despite my view on this subject--I'm not really a tough person, hehe. I don't see myself as the martial arts, kick boxing, cop type girl....I'm the, love animals, reading, photography, general exercise girl. lol.
I want to be able to live, and pretend I'm a little niave...I'm not ever going to be completely unprepared...but I don't want to live life expecting and waiting for bad things to happen.
You were a corrections officer in a prison? Wow, I would never be tough enough for anything like that!

5. gracefuldove (671) | 3 months ago | Yes, sometimes the chap is caught up with the thought of the moment. To film the scene must be uppermost in mind. After that he knew he had to intervene and so got off the criminal from the cop. Anyway, we must always help a cop to maintain law and order. In Malaysia, we have the Rakan Cop to help cops by giving them information of on going crimes.

6. millertime (184) | 3 months ago | I have to totally agree. If ever I saw a cop in that kind of situation, I would have to help out. I've seen a lot of those types of videos and all too often, it ends up with the cop getting killed. You never know to what extent the scumbag will go to try and get away so if I didn't have a gun with me, I would use anything I had or just start yelling, kicking and punching. Even if the guy just gets up and runs away as the result of someone's intervention, at least the cop will be able to go home to his family that night.

LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Yeah! Most people are probably cowards anyways, and if they think they're going to be out numbered they'll chicken out! I've heard too many stories of cops dying who had a new baby and a young wife they're leaving behind. It's so sad!

8. Kashmeresmycat (1267) | 3 months ago | Well, I'm a bit old to be body slamming someone, haha, but I sure couldn't ignore what was happening..no way.
I would feel like such a loser if I didn't at least yell, scream, wave my hands to stop another car, keep honking my horn, hit him in the head with something (purse, fist, rock,) or even if you just grab him like in a headlock type fashion with your arm for a second, the cop would be able to take it from there. All he needs is a distraction of some sorts.
I'd have to help, couldn't sleep good at night if I didn't try. Oh, and one more thing, they've helped me out numerous times over my lifetime, so I would have to pay it forward shall we say. There, now I can sleep tonight.

|
|
LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Yeah I probably wouldn't be a very good bodyslammer either lol. No reason except I'm kind of clumsy and ungraceful lol. But I could defeniatly get behind him and try and get him in a choke hold, even though it'd probably be a semi-weak one lol. It would probably distract the guy, he'd have to try and get my arms loose( I'm not THAT weak:P) and once his hands are off the cop, the cop could get the upper hand.
Ooo you have cop stories?:D What have they done for you?
| |
|
|
Kashmeresmycat (1267) | 3 months ago | That's what I was trying to say in my discussion..a choke hold. Couldn't think of that name off hand. Yeh, yeh, I can feel the adrenaline already, lol!
Well, the cops have helped me out in some ridiculous ways like when I locked my keys in my car (and it was running mind you). Couldn't turn the alarm off where I worked and they came like gang-busters thinking someone was breaking in, or someone was holding me up..very interesting indeed. Someone broke into my house and they came of course. A few more silly episodes I guess but, the worst case scenario was when I was stalked which was many, many years ago. I was just young and good-looking then, haha, just kiddding. I was recently divorced, 2 small daughters, and this jerk kept jumping on my roof at night, and then take off. Peek into my windows because I saw footprints. Stood in my backyard in the dark smoking a cigarette thinking he wasn't spotted. On and on and on this went for over a year. They thought at first it was my ex, but he was in California and certainly was no athlete. This guy was good on his feet, could jump fences like nothing, get on my roof, just a real creepy kinda guy and would completely disappear. They couldn't catch him, he just would vanish immediately. They thought that he must live close by somewhere so he would just go home fast. Like I said, he could hear the sirens too like I could. Anyway, the cops got to know me so well I didn't even have to say who I was on the phone, they knew, and they were only about 5 minutes away, and as soon as I would call, I could hear the sirens immediately. They would have five cop cars on the street behind me, and a few in front of my house. The whole neighborhood was full of cops with those big flashlights checking everyone's backyards. There was one cop car that had such a big engine in it you could hear it coming from a mile away, probably a hemi. It was an unmarked police car and the two cops who worked together were called Batman and Robin. They were very cool if I must say so myself, haha. The other cops nicknamed them that and I'll tell you, I wouldn't want to mess with them. All in all, they were the best bunch of cops and I certainly felt completely protected even though I lived by myself with the kids. Like I mentioned, this went on for over a year about 2/3 times a week, and we tried to get some sort of pattern but the days were always different, nothing the same. But, the times were the same always...between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 in the morning. Never earlier, never later, sort of like he got off work at that time. Never did get caught, the creep! I hope I didn't bore you too much, I always write too much, haha!!
| |
|
|
LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Well first of all, you defeniatly didn't bore me--your story was very interesting:)
I laughed at the cops being nicknamed Batman and Robin lol.
It's a shame they never caught the guy though! I can't believe he never left any evidence behind. He never dropped a cigarette or finger/hand print?
But it was good that the cops took care of you and your family.
| |
|
|
Kashmeresmycat (1267) | 3 months ago | Well, I'm glad I didn't bore you, Thank you!, whew! After I saw how much I wrote I almost fell off my chair, haha. I believe they did find a cigarette butt or two under the corner tree in my yard but nothing they could do with it. Just proved someone was there. They also saw footprints in the mud which were tennis shoe's they said. That's about it. They were just as puzzled as I was too. Then, I had this idea that maybe he had tapped into my phone line as I talked with my sister every night. I had the phone company come out and check but they found nothing. The guy did tell me though, that there was a way he could listen with some device (?) and take it with him. Eerie stuff. So, one night I told my sister I was getting a gun to keep in the house because of this scumbucket, and you know what. He didn't come around as much, and eventually it stopped. Weird huh?

Kashmeresmycat (1267) | 3 months ago | Well, like I said, this was back many years ago (mid 70's) when my kids were little. I don't really think they would have done DNA on it anyway (cost too much money), as this wasn't a serious offense, trespassing and harrassment. Now it's a different story and it's called "stalking". Times have changed and it's much more serious than it use to be and they know what these predators can do. They wanted to catch him sooo bad though, I wish they would have. But anyway, that's my story!
| |
|
|
LilyoftheThorns (3743) | 3 months ago | Well, at least they cared enough to keep coming back:) I bet they were all feeling protective over a woman and her young kids, not surprising:D It is too bad they never got him! Too many creeps in the world!

10. DavidReedy (1671) | 3 months ago | Well for me, it would be easy for me not to intervene, A)Not knowing what the ruckus is for and/or who started and B)having experienced police misconduct personally and witnessing and watching many cases of police brutality, and many nefarious deeds done by the ever-growing-in-oppression law enforcement. As far as I know, the dude may be a sicko on the run that this cop happened to catch--or perhaps it was a law obiding citizen who stuck up for his rights against a power-hungry little badge-wearing, gun-donning facist... How am I to know?
Most experiences with most people I know in this life, is that the less involvement with the law, regardless of who you are, the better. They are not there to serve you and protect you (many cops and court cases have admitted as such)--they are there as enforcers of Maritime law/"code".
