Hi artistry, well I have a solar panel on my roof to provide hot water without using electricty but it doesn't work very well when there's no sun at all. I also save lots of electrictiy by not using it during power cuts. I don't unplug appliances when not in use as repeated unplugging could well cause the electric sockets to come out of the walls.

I don't know if these are energy saving but here goes:
1. I like to shut off lights when I am not in a room.
2. I shut down my computer when I am not at it.
3. I try to make sure the furnace and air conditioner are well tuned. I only use the air conditioner when the house gets really humid.
4. I try to turn the temperature down a little in the winter and up a little in the summer for the heating and cooling system.
5. We installed very good windows into our home and that has made a huge difference on our heating and cooling bills.
6. We replaced our old washer and dryer (over 20 years old) with a front-loading washer and new dryer. The savings in electric usage, water usage, and drying time has been well worth the update.
7. I usually keep countertop appliances unplugged in the kitchen when not in use.
8. I try to make sure that the refrigerator and freezer stays well-stocked so that it is not cooling vacant space.
While I could use more energy efficient bulbs, I do splurge in this area. We live in a region that is very overcast most of the time. In the winter many people suffer from depression because of the loss of sun light. I use plant light bulbs for full-spectrum light bulbs in lamps and overhead can lights. The depression has not been a problem since we made this change and I find that the larger bulbs in canned lights heat the room and I can shut off the heat ducts where these are placed in the house.
