Caffeine or Nicotene - which is harder to give up? |
|
I'm looking to quit drinking caffeine AND quit smoking cigs, and I'm wondering which you think would be best to do first. Somehow I've found myself extremely addicted to both, especially within the last 6 months. I can tell that it's taking a toll on my health, though. I shake when I don't drink caffeine - and get terrible headaches when I don't have a cigarette on the hour, every hour. It's annoying and I want to change. So I'm looking for your help, here, guys!
Which do you think is harder to give up? And would you suggest giving up one first? And why?
I know a lot of people assume that quitting caffeine is MUCH easier than cigarettes, but to be honest - I've been hopelessly addicted to caffeine for probably three years longer than I've been addicted to smoking.
What do you think? Which would you try to give up first? And do you have any tips for me?

1. vonmac (2516) | 4 months ago | Hello there maezee, well I managed to do both, and I found the smoking easier to stop and I think that was because I realised how much money I was saving very early on after stopping smoking, so I gave myself a bit of an incentive really. Coffee was really hard to give up, and I had the shakes for months, sore heads and all I would say to people was look out!!!! Caffeine I would say is the harder of the two to give up, well it was for me. I havent touched proper coffee again, but I have had de-caf. Yukk.

maezee (4802) | 4 months ago | Thanks for the tip! Everyone in real life who I've talked to is telling me caffeine is much easier to give up. But I probably have 4-5 caffeinated drinks PER DAY at the very least..And I've been doing that for at LEAST three years. Yikes. And yesss!!! I've had DE-CAF too! Gross is right!

2. eddiechoohn (229) | 4 months ago | I think you should try control smoking because i think it affects your health more serious than Caffeine. Quitting on coffee is hard, especially when you need concentration in your work. However, you can try tea instead of coffee.( i recommend Chinese Tea, if you can find it in the stores)

3. alyssakenzie (410) | 4 months ago | I have started to try and quit smoking and so far things have been going pretty good. There is no way that I could given up my caffeine first though or there would have been no way that the quitting smoking would have worked at all. I work twelve hour shifts and I work the overnight shift so I have to have something to do to keep me awake and my mind off of cigarettes!! Smoking is also much worse for your health than caffeine so there are many more advantages to you and those around you if you quit smoking first!! Just think about all the money you can save by quitting and how much better your clothes will smell and your food will start to taste so much better than it does when you smoke!! There is a lot to be gained by quitting smoking and I would say that after you have quit for awhile if you still want to give up caffeine then you could try and slowly cut it out to. I wish you luck and I know that it will be hard but you just got to stick with it and beat the addiction.

6. fruitcakeliz (885) | 4 months ago | I would sy that you should quite the smoking first. I totally feel your pain, as i am addicted to both of these substances as well, and with in a year will be starting my ettempt to stop smoking. I have always said i would quit smoking when i turned thirty, which is next summer...getting myself psyched up for it already!!
But back on subject. Smoking cause more health damage, and the sooner one stops, the sooner ones body can start healing itself. And many times when people are quiting smoking, they tend to rely more on any other bad habits, such as eating or what not, and i think not having the caffine to satisfy yourself when you are giving up harsher nocotine would just be more likely to cause a relapse into one, or the other, or both.

7. jambi462 (2340) | 4 months ago | For me I would have to say that nicotine is harder to give up but I've been trying to give it up and I don't think it's that hard to not smoke that much. I haven't completely quit but I've definitely cut down a good amount. Caffeine is not all that addicting to me because I don't really drink coffee or anything so the most caffeine that I probably consume are energy drinks or pop or something.

9. slaveofsensation (222) | 4 months ago | I quit smoking after 12 years with out any pills, patches, or gum it really came down to the fact that I was ready and I wanted to quit but also I need the money more than I needed to quit smoking I added it up and it was pretty much equal to the ammout that I was short on rent the month before and I realized I would have $60 extra dollars every month. (at that time cigarettes where much cheaper than they are now) I have had a serious Caffine addiction my whole life everything I love has caffine in it and there is no gum or patch for it. I have had many kiddney problems in my life and the caffine is VERY bad for it but I can masange to cut back and stop for short periods of time but no more than a 2 week period and I will have one Dr. Pepper and then its all over. Caffine has been a hard habit to kick.
