Penny Candy

We still have this in many of our little shops. When I take my kids to the local shop to buy milk or something, they pick out the sweets they want and put them in the little paper bags. I like doing this with them because its teaching them the value of money, I give them each a coin and explain to them what they can afford, and often they spend half and save the other half for another day, they like to have change in their pockets

You are so right. Candy and cakes such as hotess cupcakes and twinkes were big when I was growing up. Now the kids have temper trantums over buying toys in the store. How did this happen. I think I know it all started when both parents had to go too work to survive.

Yes I do I remember as a child afterschool going to the store called Mr. Magoos.

I always bought the penny candy it was great to fill the little brown bag up and eat them on the way home.

Later on in the years though the price went to 2 cents a piece.

Yeah but I belive it dose not exisit any more. I can't find any.

Yeah seriously these kids they want it all now adays I have two girls that are 12 and 13 and its buy me this by me that I need air forces.

I would of been happy with 5cent candy also.

I remember penny candy when I was little too. Although I think that's about when the penny candy business was starting to fade away. I do miss it though.

I remember when they let you bring a piece bubble gum for everyone in your class if it was your birthday. For a quarter, you'd have enough for the whole class and sometimes even the teacher.

Well, there's inflation for you! lol. The only candy that I remember being 1 cent when I was growing up in the 90's was those teeny gumballs that you could get from the machine at places like Hallmark and the mall. That's about it, though. I think everything else costed a quarter or more! But in comparison to how things are these days, that's nothing.

That sure brings back happy memories. Also i remember the gum ball machines. One penny got us two pieces of gum and sometimes even a charm. If you got the speckeled gumball you turned it in for a gift!..... awww, i want to go back.

I remember penny candy. My dad use to take us doen to this little stor on Saturdays and tell us to fill up a brown paper sandwich bag. I use to love those wax soda bottles with the kool aid inside. I also liked the wrapped coins. Those were the days...life was simple.

MMMM!! You sure hit a "sweet" spot. Yes, I remember the good ole' days of penny candy. My favorite was the red dollars. Yes, kids are ungrateful today. Funny that you should bring up this subject, I was just thinking about it a few days ago when I was walking down the candy aisle at the dollar store.

i remember when bubble gum used to be a penny. i remember when things used to be cheaper and were better made. i was looking at a paper about the early 60's and the price of a blouse was $4- (sure you can get them now, but they are made in china and die after just one wash).
