http://green.autoblog.com... is looking ahead to what they plan to do when they're no longer getting as much revenue from sales of Gas,in fact it seems they've been waiting 30 years to blame more efficient cars and Hybrids/EV's for this shortfall!
They're considering a mandatory GPS based unit in a car to identify state road usage so as to "better" tax drivers. Here in the UK,.there was talk of Car insurance Companies using a "black Box" to observe what would be an electronic curfew on younger drivers, the reasoning being there would be less crashes involving young drivers if they weren't out at night..

I think the new vehicles are cute, and they are a great idea for people that live in cities or heavily populated areas. We couldn't use them here, because we are out in farmland, and there aren't any sidewalks and they would be far too dangerous to use on the roads. Besides, they might scare the horses. wink

I definitely would not want "Big Brother" tracking my every move. I do not want OnStar for that exact reason, although it is touted as a very "helpful" monitoring system it is still a monitoring system. thumbdown

Where do you stand on this issue? What are your thoughts?

I've seen Onstar ads online, showing how they could deter stolen cars by taking over the car's systems to use the lights to signal to police or to cut the engine..I do believe technology will advance to the point the biggest nut in a car,the one behind the wheel, will be taken out of the driving equation..All you will get to do is tell the car where you're going, and it'll automatically navigate itself there..it has been going that way ever since cruise control,GPS and automatic transmission came about..it's just getting the technology in one package and waiting for public opinion to change..we can accept driverless trains, and computers have better reflexes than we do..I still don't like the idea of a driverless car,or a fully automated aircraft without a pilot! In some ways,it represents a loss of choice..will sports cars soon disappear, because if automated systems are driving, speed limits won't leave any wiggle room..? You'll no longer need a license to drive, either,if you're not behind the wheel...I'd be with you on the Big Brother aspect of this!

Yeah, the problem with all of this computer technology taking over is that it is only as good as the program, and we all know that there are bugs in programs, plus they can be hacked. I think I would rather rely on a human being that has some kind of judgment and emotion than a computer that can only do what it is programmed to do. The humans definitely are not infallible, but they can make decisions on the fly that computers cannot.

The OnStar thing really makes me nervous. If they can take over the car in the event of it being reported stolen, then what is to stop somebody from doing it for other reasons. Also, say that I get into a fight with my husband and storm out of the house and take the car. All he has to do is report the car stolen and suddenly OnStar will be taking control of my vehicle and getting me arrested. Obviously this is not a likely scenario, but it does enter into the realm of possibility.

I guess that I like technology but I am not willing to give up my freedom for progress, especially when it means that computers will basically be thinking for me. I don't want other people to tell me what to think and do, so I am not about to give up this right to an inanimate object.

I see it as a commitment v involvement thing...A Person is normally committed to being at the controls and getting the vehicle to its intended destination..at the present time,a computer is just involved..but this could change fairly soon..Top of the Range Mercedes Cars, the "C" Class, are fitted with the very latest technology..They are currently fitted with radar that will detect if the car is coming up too fast on a car ahead, and apply the brakes automatically to avoid a collision-on a demonstration for journalists, one of these famously crashed into something when someone forgot to turn the system on! As You say, programming bugs and hackers can be a problem..The commercial sale of computer software is based on upgrading and improvement,a continuous process of evolution..Getting a Computer fixed or upgraded if it crashes isn't much of a problem, but if it's controlling a vehicle or aircraft you're in when it develops the BSOD,(I don't EVER want to see one of those in a vehicle!)you could be in a lot more trouble!..There's nowhere to pull over at 30 thousand feet..
