Does have a nice day really mean anything? |
|
I was reading a discussion about American English and got to thinking of terms we use constantly to the point that sometimes'they do not seem to mean much, like I love that, or have a nice day. One time our landlady told my son You are going to have to move, but have a nice day. Say What? slug you in the stomach then tell you have a nice day. or the time when I went to' take out fifteen dollars from our joint account many years back 'and the teller said,"Mrs Hatley you are overdrawn two dollars, but have a nice day. Um, did I hear you right, I am overdrawn but I am still to have a nice day? What is your take on this well used term?

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi suzzy3 well it sure did not make me feel very good knowing we were overdrawn then told oh have a nice day, grr and I went home and told my husband if he did not start putting down withdrawals in our bank book I was going to bop him one. grrrr.

suzzy3 (3913) | 2 months ago | How embarrassing as long as you can account for whats been spent then it is not so bad.
| |
|
|
Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | I made hubby track down what he had taken out and put it in the bank book so we could balance it, and we were not charged for that small an overdraft so that was a good thing.

3. thea09 (4154) | 2 months ago | Hi Hatley, as you say it is an Americanism which I thought people were trained to say in a rather meaningless way. I don't like it when I hear it as it does not sound sincere and as you point out it can be inappropriate. It's not a trend which translated well over to Europe. Here in Greece if it was someone in a shop one didn't know they would give a greeting of goodbye but add in Greek 'we thank you'.
| |
| |
|
|
Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi thea oh yes its very much an Americanism and so overused it is pathetic. Now it would be nice for someone in a shop here to say goodbye, then give a we thank you, that would be' so meaningful.I am sure whoever started this have a nice day probably meant that they really hoped your day would go well but like so many think we used it till it became meaningless' just like saying oh I love cheese or broccolli well I really think they meant they really like it. to me love has other meanings.

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi again was just thinking of another misused one How are you? well one day my hubby was asked by a rather snoopy old woman neighbor of ours, how are you? She wished she had never asked him, after he said,oh well now, Ihave a cold and a headache, I have just been to my doctor,I may have a cancer, but maybe not, also my back is killing me, and my lungs hurt from coughing,uh where are you going?" by then the old lady understood he was feeding her a bunch of garbage and took off quicker than I had ever seen her walk.he he he

thea09 (4154) | 2 months ago | I thought the whole practice of have a nice day speak origintated with those awful fast food chains to make the surly employees inject a bit of customer service skills over the grease. Lots of these gloabal companies insist on all of the staff reciting the same verbatim lines upon answering the telephone which one has to speed them up with. They don't want to say it anymore than we want to hear it but their calls are being taped. Of course most of that has now been replaced with an uninterpuptable automated system. Not here yet thankfully.

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi dragon54u oh yes it just becomes sounds after awhile as we know the person who is already taking care of someone'else did not give a damn how our day went. now I love you is headed the same way. and that is so sad, as the ones we should really say it to we seldom say it enough .there it would mean something. And how are you said to me by a complete' stranger who is trying to sell me a vacumn cleaner means nothing at all.just useless space filler.

5. littleowl (5013) | 2 months ago | Hi Hatley,
Being honest the term 'have a nice day' is more of a habitual saying, it isn't as if people really mean it, well to me it is like that so many people just 'say' it especially if you are overdrawn in the bank and they leave you up the creek then using that term, it is a silly phrase to use but if you look at it another way you could laugh at it..lol...hugs LoLo

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi littleowl you know when my hubby and I thought about it we did laugh as it was so unexpected and so funny in a way. and boy did I chew out my hubby. he always would wait til he got home to write down any withdrawals he made. the result was he forgot most of them.

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi kitty yes they are taught to always say that no matter what and in a way it was kind of funny, not at that moment but a bit later. When my friends say that to me they usually sort of move it around and say something like, hope the rest of your day is a lot better or words to that effect, then I know they really do mean it. kitty I think you always look for the best in people too, and that is really neat. hugs.

kitty42 (1150) | 2 months ago | Hello my friend
Coming from you that feels nice my friend, you are special as well
Guess what happened to me the other day, I thought about you so I had to share, I was getting of the train and there are so many stairs so I decided to take the elevator to the street, well this woman just jumped in front of me and my grandson just because she was older I guess, another person was upset I did not say anything I just looked at her and shock my head, just to see her face you can tell she had no bad feeling she thought it was her right, in cases like this, older people work my last nerve, they have no respect for anyone yet want respect from others, put me in the mind of your bus riding incident.some people are rude no matter what age.
Thank you my friend.
| |
|
|
Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | oh kitty yes some older people can be extremely rude, age doesnt seem to enter into it, I think its how they were raised maybe.I know some people here will get in one of the two elevators, and instead ofholding it for you will just let the door shut in your face and they are some of the oldest here. we are told to be 'kind to one another but some people just do not get it. I always hold the door for anyone who wants to go up or down with me, why not there are only two for the whole building so we ought to share for heaven's sakes.

7. valentinesdiner (385) | 2 months ago | Seems to be a throw-away line meant to be polite but not "in-your face".
Great example you gave, thanks.
I usually go with 'enjoy the day' and for closer friends "enjoy the day God's made you." I mean it. Really.

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi tamara he was too shocked I think.when we got ready to move out and he was paying her the last of our rent, she would go inside her apt.lock her door, count the money then unlock her door come back out, and give him the change. He told her that she had overcharged us, so she goes back into the apt.locks her door, adds it up on a calculator, then unlocks her door, comes out, locks it behind her, and says, you were right, here is the rest of your change. Then Robbie said, have a good day she slammed the door in his face as he laughed at her. wow she was so paranoid.her husband had just divorced her and then I could see why, he was a really nice man too.

10. Opal26 (9682) | 2 months ago | Hi Hatley! I think that is the most redundant and often used and annoying phrase ever! It is like you said! People say it after they have told you something so horrible! Is it supposed to make you feel better? Of course not! So why say it? Whenever someone says it to me it just makes me want to punch them in the face! It never really means what it is supposed to mean because it is never really said in the context that it is supposed to meant! Has anyone ever just said it you and meant it? I doubt it! It always follows some sort of miserable thing first!

Hatley (20200) | 2 months ago | hi opal yes I sure do agree and to say that to a person whom you have just told to move out, ugh. but she was really a piece of work, as my friend George here would say. we found out that the lady who caused our landlady to ask us to move, was in cahoots with the landlady.they both had a friend they wanted to put into our apartment 'so we were in the way.oh well alls well that ends well.
