George Will got it right about Olympics & Chicago on This Week |
|
On This Week with George Stephounapalous(sp), George Will got it right on the Obama's (both the President and Michelle) mistake in trying to get the Olympics for Chicago. They both made it about themselves and not really about Chicago or the Olympics. George Will pointed out that in both their talks they kept saying "I" all the time, something like 50% of the paragraphs contained I. Obama thinks he is some kind of celebrity and is entitled because of it and the Olympic committee slapped him down for it and Chicago along with him.

You can blame Obama all you want, but this wasn't a defeat for Obama, it was a defeat for the entire country. How does it feel to hope the worse for your country?

Taskr36 (4646) | 3 months ago | Why do you keep acting like this is so horrible for the country? Would it have generated jobs? Sure. It also would have led to more crime, more costs for our government, and I seriously doubt the increased revenue would make up for the cost of holding the Olympics here. That's not even getting into the fact that many of us would rather the world not look at a dump like Chicago as a representative of the country.
The Olympics are held in different countries every year. I think it's a bit arrogant for us to behave as though we deserve it when no South American country has ever had that opportunity.

thegreatdebater (1059) | 3 months ago | Taskr, last time I checked the country could use something that produces jobs. Since the Bush repression started, the country has been losing jobs left and right. It would be nice to have something that would actually help the country in it's time of need.
Do you know why why haven't had an Olympic game yet? That is because crime is so bad down there that they couldn't even host the IOC without fear from their lives. If you think that Chicago was bad, just wait till Rio host these games.
I noticed that you didn't answer my question Taskr, do you need me to ask it again?

stealthy (2994) | 3 months ago | I wan't praising the International Olympic Committee, I am just saying that the Obama's, as usually, made it all about themselves and because the IOC is as you say, this would be a turn off for them, and many others not even like them. If Obama could see past his own ego, he might have been a little more aware of how the IOC operates and handled things better.

2. astonysh (1941) | 3 months ago | If a non-American is allowed to comment on this, I think that most of this is irrelevant.
The greater likelihood was that the Olympics were going to go to Rio as South America had never had the games before (a promise made by IOC President Rogge), and once they came up with a bid that made this a realistic possibility, this would happen.
After losing in the bid for the 2012 Olympics (along with New York incidentally - and I have not heard much by way of political comment on that), Rio professionalised their campaign, raised the money for the bid far in excess of all the competition, and worked upon having the planning for all the venues to make sure that they could offer everything.
Obama may have lost political capital within the United States for getting involved (note though that all four competitors were represented by powerful figures - the President of Brazil for Rio, the new Prime Minister of Japan for Tokyo, the King and Prime Minister of Spain for Madrid).
The chances though of the United States getting the Olympics for the third time out of nine were small. As probably will be the story in 2020 (third out of ten in that instance) if an African country comes up with a serious bid (same reason as above, same promise from Jacques Rogge).

stealthy (2994) | 3 months ago | I think the effect of Obama was to make Chicago come in a very far back last instead of being in with the other also rans. As you say Rio pretty much had a lock on it and it was a waste for Obama to even go but by his "hey I'm a celebrity" style and ego he just made it worse for Chicago.
