Add one mole, toss gently. | | Yeah, you heard me right. Well, it's not mole stew I'm talking about. It's just one more critter to add to the long list of critters my cat has dragged in the house.
My cat, Bean, has caught squirrels, chipmunks, mice and voles before. Now, I can add moles to the growing list. My little dog, Lilly, was intently staring underneath my dresser in my bedroom and refused to take her eyes off it. Naturally, I had to see what it was that held her attention like that. Under my dresser was a mole, quite dead and lying on it's back. Ewww! At least it wasn't mangled; it was intact.
I was quite surprised that my cat caught a mole. I thought they always stayed below ground, munching on grubs, making babies, etc. 24/7/365. I've never seen a mole above ground before and I know my cat doesn't dig in the dirt other than to cover up whatever new "gift" he has left there and he only scratches at the surface at those times.
What animals, rodents, bugs, birds, etc. has your cat/dog brought inside? I'm curious to know if there are even more bizarre critters our loving pets have decided to play with.

A dog I had over fifteen years ago named Max, would catch and kill mice. We lived a few miles from the genuine city part, but we were still pretty much in the country section. We had a huge field behind our house. So he would frequently kill mice. Sherlock however, he plays with animals. He'll pick up a bug, swirl it around and spit it back out. Then he'll playfully swipe at it, but he never hurts it. He'll play with frogs, jumping around them, just having a grand 'ol time.
My grandmother though has a killer dog! He is a sweet rat terrier named Black Jack. He brings her dead squirrels, opossums, and birds! Birds! I don't know how he is fast enough to get a bird, but he has brought her two so far. It would freak me out, but Black Jack thinks he is doing something just wonderful. He's really a shy dog, but I guess that doesn't apply with other animals, just people.

mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | Awwww! Sherlock sounds like such a sweetheart! I bet it's cute watching him with his little "toys". My other dog, Penny, caught a chipmunk that I believe the cat brought in but got away from him. She grabbed it and shook it violently, apparently killing it instantly. She's my little 7 pound "killer".
Maybe it's that "little dog" instinct that makes them kill rodents. My dogs (Maltese) weight 5 and 7 pounds, yet they'll kill anything they can hold in their mouths. (Lilly caught and killed a mouse once.)
I haven't seen any of my animals with an opossum yet. I hope I never do. I caught one myself in a humane trap, drove it miles away and released it. I'm sure that, if Bean (who weighs 16 pounds) could catch one, he would kill it and bring it to me. I hope he never does! Ewww! LOL

AmbiePam (15315) | 3 months ago | That's brave of you! I wouldn't want to kill it, but I think it would freak me out to put it in my car and then go release it.

mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | That's pretty good for indoor cats, Elic! Sounds like you have a lot of these critters around outside your house, too, for all those things to get inside where the cats can get them. We have too many around here but, since I'll be moving soon to my other house, I doubt I'll have such a big critter problem there. This house is in the mountains, with trees all around. The other house has very few trees on the 3 acres it sits on and I haven't seen one rodent when I was in that house, fixing it up. Gee, I hope Bean doesn't get bored! LOL

|
ElicBxn (15342) | 3 months ago | Yeah, they do pretty good, they'll even kill bugs, if they are interesting enough bugs - can you say bored?
Actually, I think they've killed a few more rats, but the rats got off the porch before they died, because the other roomie says she's seen a few bodies in the yard... in fact, there's been a plastic tub with a couple of bricks over one "body" now for over a year... really need to get her to move it, I'm sure its down to bones now...

| | 4. Shellyann36 (688) | 3 months ago | LOL! Animals can do the strangest things. They like to keep those things as trophies. Sometimes they are even giving the critters to the owners as gifts. One lady I know who loved her cat dearly got a bird delivered to her door step on a frequent basis. The cat would come to the door with the bird in its mouth, drop the bird on the step and meow until the owner come outside to accept the "gift". My dog once drug up a full grown beaver that weighted at least 50+ pounds (probably more). I was shocked that he could drag the thing as far as he did from the neighbors pond and I was shocked at how big the beaver was. Now I have no idea if the beaver died of natural causes or if my dog contributed to the death but he certainly felt as if he had to bring his prize home with him. I was grossed out and amazed all at the same time.

mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | Now THAT'S a story, Shellyann! WOW! I never would have thought of a beaver as a "gift" brought home by one of our furry friends. Man! I can almost see the look on your face when your dog brought it home. I would have loved to have seen the dog dragging the beaver to you. I bet he was proud!
My dog, Lilly, has only caught one mouse. But then, she only weighs 5 pounds herself. LOL My other dog, Penny, caught a chipmunk that I believe the cat brought in to play with but it got away from him. When my dog grabbed it, she shook it... hard, killing it instantly. I'm glad because chipmunks, although they are rodents and a pest, are so darned cute! I couldn't bear to see such a cute little thing suffering.

mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | He sure does keep me on my toes, Jen! To date, it's been 2 squirrels, 4 voles, 1 chipmunk, 1 bird, countless mice and one mole. Bean really is something! I'm so glad he chose to make this his home, even though his "gifts" are rather gross. I'd rather see a dead rodent than one happily munching on my veggie garden! I just wish he had brought the mole to me like he usually does with the other critters because if I hadn't found it, and it, well, you know, started to smell, that would have been awful! Guess I can thank my dog for my finding the mole. She wouldn't take her eyes off of it! LOL

mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | Hi paula. I will probably just have to get used to these "gifts" my cat brings in. Living in the country, we have more than enough critters running around outside and a lot of them seem to love my vegetable garden. For that reason ONLY, I'll let my kitty come and go as he pleases. (He goes in and out the doggie door we installed for the dogs.) I'm sure we'd be inundated by rodents if it weren't for Bean.
A long time ago, I had a cat become a family member exactly like your Rosie. She hung around outside and I fed her while trying to locate her owner or even anyone who might know who she belonged to. No one knew anything so, before long, she came inside and was perfectly (purrfectly?) content to stay. I didn't notice any legs or tails outside but she was a great mouser every Fall, when the weather got colder and the mice started coming in for warmth.

| | 7. muscles4me (8819) | 3 months ago | My dog loved all the other animals when she was still alive. She just wanted to bark at them and run around them in a circle. She (Buddy) was so loving she would not even play with a toy if it was shapped like an animal. She played with those elephant hoffs and thos braided roes. She was very small, always under 11 pounds. My cats play with toy mice because I keep them inside. I live in a cono and we are fined $25 of our pets are found outside(or we do not pick up after them). I hope you are taking your babies with you when you move.

mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | Hi muscles. I don't know what possessed me to choose "Dogs" as the category to put this in. I guess I was thinking about my dog staring at the mole that the cat had brought in. Or, maybe it was just a brain fart. Either way, at least I did mention my dog in my discussion. LOL
I'm very definitely going to be taking my dogs and cat with me. My husband's cat is the meanest cat I've ever met and he can keep her. They belong together. He raised her from a tiny kitten, bottle fed her. I'm sure she's as mean as she is because of the way he "played" with her as she was growing older. He likes to play rough... very rough. I honestly think now that my husband has a very nasty, evil side to him. I'm just waiting now for my disability benefits to start, then I'll be so outta here!
Oh, he's behaving himself now (again). I'm pretty sure he's worried about me leaving, although I haven't said anything to him. Tough beans! He has miraculously worked out a plan with the mortgage company so we're no longer in foreclosure. I guess they just have too many foreclosures on their books already and are willing to work with anyone who shows an interest in keeping their houses. But, that doesn't mean I'm going to stay. I've had enough issues with this man to know that they'll just continue if I stay and I would rather have a boring, lonely life than the one he's given me.
But, yep, I'll be taking my babies... all three of them. It should be interesting in the car with all of them since my other house is 250 miles away. LOL

| | 9. dragon54u (9627) | 3 months ago | In Arizona Cookie (my rat terrier) would kill rabbits, lizards, tarantulas, anything that moved. She's still like that! She can pick birds from the air in mid-flight if they are dumb enough to fly too low. When we moved back to my home state of Ohio she was thrilled to discover a new toy--worms!! Crickets, too, she has a ball with them. And mice! This is a paradise for her!
How are things? Have you moved yet?
| |
| |
|
|
mentalward (4294) | 3 months ago | Hi dragon. No, I haven't moved yet. I still haven't heard anything about my disability benefits. I'll need them to survive until I can take HIM to court. For now, though, it's pretty quiet around here. He's not talking much to me because he's worried that I'm up to something. I am, of course, but I haven't told him. He doesn't want me to leave. That's too bad. He blew it. I'll be out of here just as soon as I can. In the meantime, while waiting for my benefits, I've been packing so I'll be ready when the benefits start.
Now, about your dog... worms???? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! I think I could handle seeing my dogs or cat chewing on a mouse easier than a worm. I don't know why; the thought of it is just too gross. Ewwww!
