Recipe or Feel? email this discussion to a friend?

I just finished having a conversation with a male friend of mine and during the conversation we started talking about cooking. He was mentioning some of the different reasons that each of the sexes cook. Among the reasons he thought was that many times a women will cook because she is the main chef of the family and it is just something she does almost every day whereas many times a man is not the main chef of the household and does it for different reasons. I thought it was a good point that he made and I have to say that I agree with him.

But as the conversation went on he was mentioning that he thought probably everyone could cook if they would read a recipe and understand it before they begin cooking the meal and of course there is also an element of a "feel" for cooking. At that point I mentioned to him that I could not cook with a recipe because every time that I do I mess up the meal entirely! While it is true that I may glance through book s once in a while to get an idea of something new to cook, you will never see me put the recipe on the kitchen sink and begin following it!

How about you? When you cook do you use a recipe as a general rule or are you like me and just go in the kitchen and start putting things together that you feel should go together and turn out a meal?

hi greeneyedlady when I had my own apartment I loved to just
make up my own recipes and feel my way through various dishes as I was really cooking only for my self as my son had weird hours and often ate at work, or ate out. I had a lot of fun just
experimenting and I seldom goofed up either.

Hi Hatley! My how quick you are today I just posted this! Yes I think that is probably why I can't cook with a recipe because I love experimenting also! Every time I see a recipe I always think...oh I can do something better than that!! And it's amazing how when you do it long enough it just comes to you and like you, You seldom goof up!!

Thanks a lot for your response!

hiya hatley
That kind of put me off cooking when I ended up living on my own, it's not nearly as much fun having someone to cook for and to share mealtimes with IMO. I'm glad it had the opposite effect on you. thumbup

hiya GEL hugs*

I used recipe books when I was younger, but most of my cooking was done with learning from mum and dad. I'm not quite sure if I have a feel for it... I guess I do because I can make a dish just by thinking of what ingredients I would like to taste in it and what tastes/flavours go well...IMO. I never use scales now I just guesstimate or judge it from the packet weight.
If a man is cooking...he's done something wrong! lol (ok all you men out there reading this... I was JOKING!) rasp

Or Else the man Wants something special like YOU for dessert!!!! w00t

Hiya Sister Alice!! OH I am sooooo bad!!! lol

Maybe the "feel" for cooking just comes from years of experience. I know when I was very young I could easily burn boiling water...not easy to do, I Know, but for me, it was Definitely possible! But after years of putting things together, I'm like you, I sit back, think of the flavors I want, then a little bit of this and a little bit of that and Voila! It happens, just like with you! Maybe the "feel" comes from experience with some of us and not inbred!

And Oh My God! If I had to sit and measure out a teaspoon of this and a tablespoon of that and an ounce of that one...I would Never be finished! And I would ruin it to boot!! This girl does not even Own a pair of cooking scales! Gee I wonder why?? confused

lol @ burning boiled water... I guess that's where it all dries in and burns the bottom out of the pan! whistle I've burnt a boiled egg before doh ...but I've improved as a home chef since then lol

myLot reputation of 86/100. greeneyedlady (552)   ranked 4 out of 163 in cooking  3 months ago

haha! Yes it all dries up and burns the bottom of the pan and it is Very difficult to get clean! You know what is even worse? Put on a pan of boiling water, add a package of powdered chicken noodle soup and then go and fall asleep for a few hours until the smoke is so bad in the house that it wakes you up and the smoke detectors are going off! Not Only did I have a pan with burnt chicken noodles in the bottom of the pan which was Almost impossible to get clean, But the smoke was so bad and I couldn't get it out that I ended up having to call the Fire Department and they had to bring their huge fan out to blow the smoke out of the house...took them about a half an hour even with the huge fan!! Of course the Up side to that was that I was able to flirt with a half dozen of the hunkiest Firemen that you ever did see, rasp but when I ask them all to dinner, I told them I would cook for them, they all Declined telling me it was probably a better idea if they took me Out to dinner!! Can You Imagine??? Ahhhh Yes! The good old days of cooking!! lol

Burnt a boiled egg before huh?? Now I don't feel so bad! I can't imagine what a mess that would make!! shocked

myLot reputation of 99/100. Aliceinwebland (5190)   ranked 14 out of 163 in cooking  3 months ago

lol trust you to find the good in a bad situation GEL... hunky firemen hehehe w00t I can't say that I blame them for declining your offer to cook for them though! hahahaha I hope they took you somewhere nice?
Smoke is bad to shift, not just from the air, but from clothing and furniture too.

Ah ha! I know your secret! You, my friend, can not follow directions! You cook the way you cook because you prefer to do things your own way.

To answer the question I only need a recipe for something I don't know how to make.

Hi Gel, As a female I find cooking the daily meal a chore but do enjoy baking cakes etc but in all the cooking I never follow a recipe book, but they are in my cupboard as an ida gide or to check sometimes the quantities needed if cake making. In fact most of my meals are mish mashs of what is in the cupboard. Huggles Ellie:)

myLot reputation of 86/100. greeneyedlady (552)   ranked 4 out of 163 in cooking  3 months ago

Hi Ellie! Yes I do remember you telling me before that cooking a regular meal is not really your forte! But that's OK! Not everyone was meant to be a chef...and your baking skills are probably better than mine as I do not bake mush because Hubby and I are not really big sweets eaters so why bake a cake when it won't be eaten? confused

By the way, sometimes I make those mish mash meals also, find some things in the cupboard that I am tired of looking at and make a mish mash meal out of it. When I tell Hubby that dinner is going to be:

"A little bit of this and a little bit of that"

Then he knows enough...it's mish mash night! lol

Thanks a lot for your response and have a great week-end! wink
