What would you do if you discovered an illegal immigrant in your basement? |
| |
| DISclaim ER: After the spate of discussions in politics on the subject of illegal immeigrants this is just a light hearted approach, not for ranting. You may not have a basement but use your imagination, your illegal immigrant could have set up a tent in your garden, taken over your garage or shed, squatted whilst you were out. Create your own scenario and say what you'd do. | | | | | |

| | I will surely be shocked. How in the world can an illegal immigrant be in my basement. Unless he is an alien with supernatural powers. LOL The first thing that will enter my mind is he is an intruder breaking in. I will lock the doors and call the police. Maybe, just maybe, that if I find out sooner that he is an illegal immigrant seeking refuge, I might offer him food depending on the degree of shock seeing someone in my basement. have fun! | | | | | | |

| | My first reaction would be to find out if we spoke a common language. Assuming we did, I would then interview them about their physical health, history, qualifications, skill level, etc. I would then threaten to report them to the authorities unless they worked for me as payment for board and lodging. The ideal illegal immigrant I'd want to catch should be able to cook (preferably Indian, Chinese, Thai, Spanish, Italian, Persian and Turkish cuisine), iron, clean, drive, speak English, be literate in the same, and have at least 1 year therapeutic massage experience (preferably shiatzu and/or swedish). As well, they should be presentable, so that they can appear before guests when I host a dinner, or some other get together, formal or otherwise. They must be intelligent enough to understand instructions and learn new skills, but not so intelligent they get funny ideas and defy me, or worse, demand financial compensation. I pride myself on being an equal opportunity employer, can't help it. I have a soft heart. It's a failing, I know, but... | | | | | | |

| | A married couple wouldn't be too bad. An entire brood would be even better! That way, you can... ummm... talk pleasantly about guarantees! Convince them that only one should leave the house at a time (like going shopping), to minimize the chances of all being caught. After all, what family likes to be separated!? And I do form such intense attachments! (see previous post about my inherently loving and compassionate nature) I must hand it to you for coming up with great ideas! You're the best! Now, excuse me while I run up to my attic to check! Who knows? Christmas may come early to this non-Christian household of mine! | | | |

| | Just got back from my attic. No sla... I mean illegals up there... sigh. No early Christmas for me, then. Oh well. Then again, not many people want to come here to the Philippines in search of opportunities. Quite the opposite, actually. With good reason. Rereading your post, and assuming there were sla... (cough! cough! It's the weather, very cold lately, my apologies) illegals camping out, I see your point: I wouldn't want a literate... au pair. Education is highly over rated, anyway. After all, if ignorance is bliss, who am I to deny another such joy? Ah, the burdens of the educated! My kind heart would not want such a curse on the shoulders of another. Especially if they work for me. Goddess knows, they'd have enough on their plate! | | | |

| | Illegal immigrants are always the hotly debated topics in my country everyday and escalate during election campaigns. My country has been infested by illegal immigrants from the neighboring countries. What used to be a peaceful town has now turned into a cowboy town with all the bad habits they brought over from their country of origins. What is worse these paperless immigrants multiply fast and sooner they will outnumber the true sons of the country. With their habitual nomadic life I am not surprise that one day they will be found squatting in my compound. It is quite a disturbing at the thought of these immigrants intruding into our properties one day as these people are fearless and have no respect for the local laws. Luckily our security here is quite tight and they are always on the lookout for these people who have become public nuisance. I will not hesitate to call the relevant authorities to round them up, evict them and deport them to their countries of origin should they ever be found in my place. I will not tolerate illegal immigrants who are a menace to the law abiding citizens of my country. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Zandhi, I see you read the pe disclaimer for a light hearted approach. This was put in as their have been many intolerant rants over the immigration issue in the last couple of weeks on here. Saying that I do appreciate your points and you seem to have the same issue that I do with problems arising from an illegal group arriving from a neighbouring country. If they came for exile and wish to become responsible citizens then fine, if they come to a country they hate with not a sinlge show of respect for the people there or their traditions please go elsewehere. | | | |

| | Hi Alice, good for you not turning the chappy in after his long and perilous journey to your basement. No offer of local fare though to tempt him to stay or leave the country depending on your cooking skills that day? In principal I would say that anyone with the nouse to try and escape a bad sitution in their homeland should have the right to go to mose places he fancies as an alternative, but I do think it's going a bit too far if they decide to land in their enemies back yard, such as a country with a long history of mutual hatred between the two countries. | | | |

| | If i've got it to give then I'll share thea, but more often than not the food cupboard and fridge are bare lol. I hear what you're saying about enemies, but who created that social divide/hatred. You're not born to hate someone just because they are from a different country or have different political views. Governments cause it IMO. | | | |

| | With you on the empty fridge scenario Alice. Hatred between two nations though can go far deeper than govenment policies, it can just evolve from a difference of everything culturally and whole different attitudes to everything. If the immigrants hate everything that the country they want to enter represents and is only there for slighthly higher wages but continues to live as they would in their own country, whilst openly disliking that countries inhabitants I think it's a wrong move. Also when the inhabitants of the country they enter are fearful with good reason of the immigrants and also show mutual antipathy to them (we are not talking political regugees here) then it would be better for everyone if the immigrants chose a country they didn't disrespect and where they would more likely be accepted. | | | |

| | So we agree Alice, its ok to immigrate into a new place as long as you don't go around stomping out local traditions and breaking into their houses and spreading crime and diseases which would have not been allowed in if proper checks had been done. The discalimer as I've said now a few times was because of a number of highly intolerant rants lately on here about immigrants. I did not want this to turn into one of them as those types of ranters do not discuss, they shout. I hope that excuses my discliaimer Alice. | | | |

| | If he puts some food in the larder; remembers to take his rubbish out; puts the top back on the toothpaste and gets a round in now and again then he's quite welcome to stay until he finds his own basement. | | | | | | |

| | I don't really know what I would do. I'm pretty sure that in the US one can get into trouble for keeping illegals. I'm not against immigration since one thing that all Americans seem to forget is that our ancestors were all immigrants, well except for Native Americans. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Zeph, we're in pe, you can make any daft thing up and no ones allowed to rant. There's quite a bit of exploitiation going on above you but no deportions so far or reportings. I didn't realise though you could get into trouble for one being in your basement, I thought only the illegal would be in trouble. | | | |

| | ( this could well be a woman, man, or young person but for general purpose I use the term 'HE/HIM') First! Get him inside out of the elements(it is only 1,5 Centigrade just now) and offer him food and drink. Ask him for his Identification and if he has contacts/friends/family in the area and if he is afraid or sick or if someone is after him NOW,, as in enemies or the authorities. IF he does not speak a language I know, then I will try to determine the language. There are so many immigrants here, among which I have friends, that surely one can find an interpreter. Depending on his 'state', he may well need a bath and change of clothing as well.I will do all I can AT THIS TIME for this man because he needs help. The rest shall fall into place as it shall. It is not an uncommon thing around certain parts of the world that people will risk all to get out of the problems they are in. I try to remember that and my own life struggle and that of my family before me before I condemn any man. Yes yes.. I DO get discouraged by those we hear about who abuse the system and take advantage of the the goodness of others.. but we cannot condemn others on that premise. Each situation is serious onto itself, is it not. Once we have determined the situation, the fellow may remain in the house until proper authorities are aware and shelter and support have been arranged. There are facilities for those who will be investigated to find out there intent in our country. I am not an expert and will not put my family at undo risk either.. just in case. I would even hide someone if I thought they were in real danger. There are as many immigrants that are 'war-crime victims' as there are 'immigrants who are tired of the war that 'their side' started'.. so people are not always safe automatically in the 'new land'. I have never been an illegal immigrant..no, but I HAVE been an immigrant and I well remember how it feels to be treated as if you are worth less than household pets and even suspected of being something or someone to be afraid of or definitely hate.. for some reason. What a species we are.. man.. I hope we are still evolving, don't you? And this isn't really a rant is it?? Okej, not sooo light hearted either, but the topic just ' made me do it'! MEA CULPA a little bit. | | | | | | |

| | Indeed fjaril, there are a few who failed to absorb the full intent of the disclaimer. Here was I expecting you to defend the fact that you wouldn't be illegal when you turned up with your bottle of gloop, because of Europe. I can see I'm going to have to be serious in your serious discussions if I expect light heartendness in my light hearted ones. I actually agree with your sentiments except in certain instances which I have outlined in Alices box above and stand by but those remarks are really concerning economic immigrants. I don't know much, well nothing actuallly, about what goes on in the state of Sweeden so don't know how much of a likely scenario it is there or where they would be coming from to reach you. I do expect your authorites would handle it all with a tolerant approach though. So where were you an immigrant that you were treated as less than a pet, I thought the Swedish were inoffensive enough to be welcome most places? | | | |

| | Well you're further than me if you serously expect me to drive for at least 4.5 hours to the nearest IKEA for a bit of chocolate. That would make it the most expensive bit of chocolate in the world if you added up petrol, toll charges, plus the stress I would inevitably face having to drive round Athens to find the place. I would be fearful in such city traffic as wouldn't know where to give way, Greek road signs only let one party on alternate sides of the road into this great secret. I have mastered my nearest large town and I'm sure that in several years an IKEA will be built on the outskirts and then I shall get some cholcolate. | | | |

It was about 3yrs ago that a certain guy walked up to our home late in the night with almost no hope of getting where to rest if we had said no but we accepted him & he still stays with us. | | | |
