pain and how do you handle it? | | Back on August 20th I had my left kidney removed! 54 years old and never thought that would have happened to me. It was a very serious operation. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks. And I have not felt right since the whole thing happened. But this is not my only health problem. I am also diabetic, type two. That is what happened to my kidney. Then after that I developed this thing with my stomach called gastroparesis. It mean that not only and I on a weird diet my nerves in my stomach are dead and I throw up alot. I am in pain alot. I am on Lortab 10's all the time. A big baby when it comes to pain. I have 8 disks in my back that are dissolving. So my question is how do you handle pain in your life?

I have been to the doctor today, and right now, i am in pain, but i just took a pain pill, and it should be better in a few minutes. Yours, on the other hand, is a different story. You really need to be careful with that diabetis. Sure hope you get better soon.

I have never have such a major health issues in my 51 years of living but my main problem now is my weight which I don't seem to be able to shed which result in having to take BP medications to control my blood pressure. The doctor told me that I have to take my pills for life! I am already controlling my food intake but there seems to be no effect. I think with our age, we should be more particular on what we eat.

| | 8. mentalward (4248) | 2 months ago | Wow, Cookie! You've sure been through the wringer, huh? Man!
I've had a few surgeries in my lifetime (28 to date) and I know pain. I also have fibromyalgia and arthritis so I know chronic pain. I take codiene at night for pain and sometimes during the day. Twice a day I take naproxin, 500 mg. I was also just put on Savella, a new drug approved for fibromyalgia pain and depression.
Still, I have constant pain. I have IBS with the fibromyalgia so I often have an upset stomach. I have to tell you that it took me a couple of years to come to terms with my constant pain. I got so depressed at first and stopped doing almost everything. A little while later, I just got so tired of taking all these pills and decided that I was not going to let this pain stop me from doing all I was able to.
So, now, I hardly ever even think of the pain. Oh, it's there, all the time, but I guess I've gotten used to the fact that it's not going to go away and simply do what needs to be done, at least that which I can handle, without even thinking about how much it hurts.
Sometimes I do overdo it and pay for it for the next couple of days but I just keep plugging along. If you can, you should try to get as much exercise as you can. I can't do much at all because my back starts screaming at me after only standing for a few minutes but I still do all I can. If it hurts too much, I sit down for a few minutes until the worst of the pain subsides then I get up and do more. At the end of the day, I usually feel mighty proud of myself for doing as much as I did. That helps to take my mind off the pain, too.
Chronic pain and exercise just don't sound like they should go together but, with moderate exercise, the pain seems to fade. I walk all I can, clean all I can, garden all I can and, even though I'm usually exhausted by the end of the day, I feel good about doing so much and my pain level dwindles.
With a bad back, I use a back brace. I bought it at WalMart and it has proven invaluable to me! I'm able to do so much more with much less pain when wearing it. Maybe you could ask your doctor if wearing one might help you? Or, just go buy one and try it for yourself. Mine cost around $16.00, in the pharmacy area.
Good luck to you!

mentalward (4248) | 2 months ago | Oh, one question. Are you able to take something for nausea? Does your doctor know about your vomiting? There are drugs to stop nausea/vomiting. I've taken them after a few surgeries because of the pain meds they gave me. They really do work!
Can you drink Coke syrup? That is found behind the counter at any pharmacy. Why it's behind the counter I have no idea. It's just Coke syrup! It is amazing for getting rid of nausea. I used that when I was pregnant with my first son and had morning sickness (which would hit at any time of the day, not just in the morning) and it would completely get rid of the nausea. But, in your case, I would think that prescription nausea meds would work better. Ask your doctor if you could use them.

| | 9. nonersays (151) | 2 months ago | I had my tummy cut open from above my belly button to just above my pubic area to have a 20 pound cyst and the ovary it was attached to removed. I was in horrid pain forever after that. At least it felt like forever. I ate pain pills and slept a lot.
Eventually that pain passed, thank goodness.
I have other pains. They sound minor compared to what you are going through, but feel pretty big to me.
My right foot has a lot of damage to it. I can't feel ANY of my toes on that foot, but I have a crack across the top of the foot, and injured ligaments in the ankle from when I feel off a ladder at work. Those injuries will never heal properly because I have a job where I'm on my feet all day.
After 10 hours on my feet the pain will be all the way from the top of my foot to my hip.
Then I got pregnant, and my uterus is pushing on my sciatic nerve, making my right thigh feel like I have a hoard of angry red ants biting me constantly. That wont go away until after the baby is born and my uterus descends back to its proper place.
I also have all the normal aches and pains that anyone who works on their feet all day feel by the end of the day.
There's not much I can do for it. I had a prescription for pain pills, but I've not been able to use those since I got pregnant, for obvious reason. I grit my teeth and bear it through the day, and take hot baths at night and hope it helps ease the aches a little.

| | 10. nicholejade (1610) | 2 months ago | It really all depends on the person. Some people can take a T'3 and have no pain at all. Others will pop Oxycontin and Percacets like candy and it won't do nothing for them. I was in a car accident over 3 years ago and have chronic back, hips and leg pain. Let me tell you it is not fun at all. I since been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and arthritis in both hips. I have had 2 surgeries on my left knee and going in for the 3rd since it is baring alot of weight on that one knee. I have tried everything that you can think of out there with no luck on anything. I do have a high tolerance to pain but I really wouldn't wish this pain on my worst enemy. I basically grin and bare it. I literally can't do nothing for my pain just to live and try to cope with it. In the long run I do pay for it on most days.
All I can suggest is talk with your doctor and see if they can put you on something that will help reduce your pain. Otherwise you might just have to grin and bare the pain.
