AmbiePam (15194) | 1 month ago | I'm on the top level, so if someone is outside my window, they're likely to fall and kill themselves. Hmmm...Do you have any bells? I collect bells. Put them right against the window pane, pressing up to the glass. If someone so much as rattles the window, the bells will alert you. And possibly scare the person off if you have enough bells sitting there making a loud enough noise.

2. fjaril (4127) | 1 month ago | We have had installed a system whereby any entry into the home is detected with special sensors/detectors in strategic places. We set the alarm whenever we leave our home. Should the alarm go off, a phone call goes immediately to me and a chain of people in an order of who likely will be home the most and who will respond and these people also live on the street. This system works soo well, it brings neighbours closer together to be neighbourly and because each of us then appreciates the care the other is willing to give to the next neighbour, since we mostly all have this system. Anyone without the system or with another, still gets additional attention too.
All doors are locked, even if I am in the backyard and the dog, a great watchdog, then, is IN the house. If I am right near the deck at the back and the dog is on the deck I leave the entrance door to the backyard and deck area open so I can see right to the front of the house and the dog can respond as needed. He is then a great alarm system that takes care of the problem too.
We have smoke detector on both levels of the house and 2 fire extinguishers, one on each level, as well as one secured beside the grill/ barbecue area on the deck. All of these are checked at regular intervals to be sure that they are at optimum efficiency. There is a french window directly onto the garage roof for easy escape from the house, for whatever reason.
The great thing is too that all neighbours here are friendly and actually watch over your house and property when you are not home.. an automatic thing..I even have keys to several neighbours' homes and they to mine, in the event that there IS a fire or such and they can then gain entry to rescue my dog and rabbit and I can get into their homes to rescue their pets. We routinely tell someone we will be away and for how many days and that someone will take in the newspapers and the mail delivered and we shovel snow, turn on lamps at intervals if not on automatic timers, even cut the neighbour's grass and water the plants..check the freezer and fridge to see if all is working well and the electricity as well. and of course, water those indoor plants as needed... all for friendship and security.. and it extends to us all that way.. no one is left out of the loop so as not to draw attention to an empty house.
We are but 20 houses and I cover another 10 myself in the next neighbourhood, because the idea has caught on and hopefully, will expand more there too as they all see the benefits of feeling secure and developing friendships.
I realize it may sound sappy, but this system really works for us. Anyone wandering in the neighbourhood knows in short order that everyone is always home, even if they aren't

3. oraclemv (2499) | 1 month ago | We have a home security system but don't always turn it on. I keep a cell phone in the room I sleep in and my husband wants to buy a gun. We are going to install fake cameras at the front door. Usually robbers will scope the area first and they won't attempt to break into a place that may be video taping them.

6. KrauseHome (13383) | 1 month ago | Well, when we bought our New home just over a month ago, we did some research on this area, and also asked some of the neighbors about the safety of this area, etc. as well. Everyone who has lived here for 3 or more yrs. says that we live in a really safe area, and since it is a culdesac we don't have to worry about a lot of traffic of people unknown as well. And I have noticed that a lot of the people here do look after each other's place more for sure. We have considered making sure everything is safe with nicer computers here, etc. but we do make sure everything is locked up before we go somewhere and leave on extra lights, etc. if we have too as well.

7. jillhill (11586) | 1 month ago | I basically just keep the doors and windows locked...I live in a small town though and so it's really pretty safe. I also live in a middle class neighborhood so that is safer then in the ritzy part of town.....If I do feel a little scared I just do a few things....like I have a rug jammed up against the door....so someone trying to come in can't open the door...but if I need to get out it's quick and easy to remove.

9. paula27661 (5096) | 1 month ago | We have an alarm system installed at our house which we were lucky to be able to take from our last house and move it to this one which is not usually the done thing when a home is sold but because we sold our old house to the government they didn’t mind us taking the alarm system. We have locks on most of the windows and security screens on the glass sliding doors. I would say the biggest deterrent is the alarm; I wish we could afford to have it monitored though.

10. JenInTN (3487) | 1 month ago | Home security stystems are great but there are a lot of people that can't afford them. I guess it would depend on the person wanting security. I just make sure that my doors and windows are locked up tight before leaving or going to bed. I also have my frisky little dogs that let me know if someone so much as poots in the neighborhood..lol.
