Running with a Cold? |
|
Well, I caught the office cold. It's thankfully not a constant runny nose type cold (currently, knock on wood). But it's still somewhat bad as I keep having to blow my nose. But I was still feeling good enough today for a trip to the aquarium and volunteering. Tomorrow I should still be at work (because there is no point in staying home when everyone has it already). So does that mean running would still be okay?
I don't normally breathe through my nose so that shouldn't be a problem. Although I know I'll still not be able to breathe as easily and definitely would plan to slow my pace by at least a minute per mile, probably even more. I just feel like I should get out there especially with having that 10K coming up. But then I also don't want to overdo it and ruin myself for the upcoming 5K (which I'm trying to finally beat 30 minutes on, whereas the 10K I am just hoping to be able to run the entire thing).
So should I run or just stay home this week?

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | It doesn't have any cough component yet, but most people at work have a cough with it so maybe that's coming next.
I actually do better with colds though when it is cold out. Today it was so hot outside that it made the cold seem much worse. And then tomorrow should be hot as well so I guess I won't be running with the group tomorrow... besides, I wouldn't want any of them to catch it as practically everyone has some type of race coming up.
So I'm thinking if I do two runs this week, I'll do Thursday and Saturday, provided I'm not totally dead by then. And maybe Thursday I could do a before work run on trails or something. Both just easy runs, no speed work this week even though I need it.

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | Yeah, I guess I could always add in a slight speed workout during the week of the 5K, just well in advance of the day of the race.
I hate getting sick. Although I am glad I wasn't sick for the marathon bike tour. I felt like I was getting sick before that and then luckily I didn't end up getting sick until a week later.

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | I think I'm sticking to your advice at least for a few days here. Sitting at work looking down at paperwork always seems to make my colds feel far worse, and once again that worked it's magic. So I won't be out running tomorrow night. But I hopefully will be feeling better to at least run one day this week. Maybe two. But I don't want to run if I'm not feeling a lot better, since I don't want to ruin my chances for the Halloween 5K where I hope to beat 30 minutes. But I also don't want to get out of shape by not running at all this week if I can avoid that.

sarahruthbeth22 (10393) | 2 months ago | If I remember correctly,it takes 7 days to Really get over a cold .What was the first day of your cold?By then you should be well enough to get back to your normal routine. There is plenty of time before Halloween. You will be okay.

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | Saturday my nose started running a bit, then Sunday I could tell it was a cold, and then Monday has been the worst day so far. So I'm hoping Saturday counts as the start date.
I'm supposed to go to Disneyland on Sunday too. Already have tickets.

sarahruthbeth22 (10393) | 2 months ago | By Sunday you should be fine! Friday night, you should go back to running at your normal pace! Drink a lot of fluids and you should be okay. Take Care.

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | Thanks! I will drink plenty of fluids and hope that you are right.
My 5K partner was a bit disappointed that I won't be running with her this week. She tried to get out of her run this week but I told her she should really still run or she will regret it. But if I go out with her and get her sick, that won't be good either. So hopefully she will still be motivated to practice without me. She promises that she'll still go to the race no matter what because she said she thinks she can complete this (I'm trying to convince her not to shoot for a specific time for the first one). I just hope she's right because it seems awfully scary for me to think about completing a race without a lot of preparation. Although she seems to mostly do good in life by her philosophy so we'll see. She could end up totally surprising me.

Pigglies (5000) | 1 month ago | I will! Oh, and I went running tonight and it was pretty crazy. I went a lot slower than usual, about a full minute per mile slower. And then after a mile or two, my nose just started running like crazy (maybe it wanted to make up for my pace, lol). But I kept going. Got to 4.4 miles and then my legs started to hurt which is odd for me. So I stopped. And then went and blew my nose and couldn't believe all the junk still in there. I thought I was nearly better. Guess not.
Maybe I'll try again on Saturday morning. Sunday I am definitely going to Disneyland though. I should be fine for that, but running apparently takes more out of me than I thought!

sarahruthbeth22 (10393) | 1 month ago | Running is hard work on your body. When you aren't 100%,it will take it out of you.It is a pain but a great sign that your nose in running. You don't want all of it stuffing up your head.Trying to run when you can't breathe properly because of a totally stuffed head isn't good. I think you should be okay by Sunday. Keep drinking alot of fluids!I'll keep my fingers crossed. Have a great weekend!

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | Yeah, that's what I'm thinking... any day this week where I can finally run I'll do just an easy short run. Just something to stay in shape.
Now the week has gotten too hot though which makes my nose run more. If it cools down a bit I'll definitely be running.

4. crystallight1l (260) | 2 months ago | True, when everyone is already infected, why stay at home. Usually running will cause dry throat and may lead to bronchitis. Bronchitis is horrible and painful. It kills our working persistence and forces us to return home. However, if you drink enough water before running,
it will lower the risk of bronchitis. 'll say that 10K is too much, yet it depends on your age and your running skill. If you pant after running
1K, 10K is too much,
but it's ok when you start panting after 5K:D.
Enjoy running! Try running at home, it's easier for you to recover from runs, and try to recover from your cold before the 10K.:D

Pigglies (5000) | 2 months ago | Thanks! I'll definitely drink some water before running. Today I felt a little bit better so I think by Thursday I'll be able to run. Tonight I didn't go running with the running group since I would hate to get anyone sick there. But Thursday I'll go running by myself. Then Saturday I'll probably go out again hopefully back to my normal pace.
I only have a minor cough so far with this cold, but I definitely don't want bronchitis. Thanks for the advice!
