typhoons |
|
metro manila and northern part of luzon was severely affected by 2 typhoons that hit the country few weeks ago. mother nature had its revenge. the senate investigated on the probable cause of the said disaster. it is said global warming and deforestation of the mountains and water shed areas were identified for the massive flooding. not to mention the clogging of the canals all over the metro. It was also mentioned recently from the office of the DENR, fish pens in laguna de bay also contributed to the clogging of the water. landslides is obviously due to massive logging. its been told sierra madre is severely deforested. can you blame mother nature for the wrath that just ocurred? we should all learn from what just happen.we had exploited nature and now its taking revenge. what is your take on this? I would appreciate if you could share some of your thoughts. thanks.

2. Graceekwenx (537) | 1 month ago | i was worried so much on this gelay. We all have our faults here. Ever since the i saw the wrath of ondoy to manilenos, i surfed on GreenPeace website as i need to be cautious of my environment. The advises there are actually doable and it is not expensive. I had been thinking of joining a group who dwells on tree planting as their major project. it is my little way of reverting nature back to balance. It is the most that i can do. I sure do filipinos wake up on this.

gelay07 (263) | 1 month ago | it should start from us. i mean.. practical things like throwing garbage properly instead of throwing it anywhere. planting trees or maybe more green in our sorroundings would not just help us from floods but also can increase the air we breathe. make it a point to unclog canals or clear the water pathways. if everyone of us would do these simple things, it would make a big difference in our environment.

3. rsa101 (7315) | 1 month ago | I guess mother nature is just responding to what we are doing to her. She does not need any revenge since she doesn't really care if she would hit an innocent person or what. Its just a consequence of what or how we are treating her.

4. anne25penn (790) | 1 month ago | We all have our own part to play in order to make small changes in order to save our environment. Global warming is being felt and has been felt even as early as five years ago when our typhoons and storms have become more frequent and destructive. I have had the privilege of planting trees at Ipo dam last year, but planting trees is not as easy as you might think. We had to take a fifteen minute boat ride, climb deep into the forest, wade through small rivers and almost broke our necks because it had rained the night before and this made the path slippery. I even broke my rubber shoes in the trek. But when we reached the spot where we would plant the trees, it was a sorry sight because the topmost part of the mountains are the ones that are deforested. The trees were destroyed by "kaingin" or charcoal making. I only hope that the trees that I planted are still alive.
Since I know that planting trees in denuded forests is something that I will be thinking twice before I join again, I plant trees and shrubs in my backyard instead. One urban planner interviewed after Ondoy flooded Marikina said that one reason why the flood waters took time to recede is because almost every small space in the city is covered with concrete. Plus, I use canvas shopping bags for my grocery shopping so that I can minimize my use of plastic bags.

gelay07 (263) | 1 month ago | its about time we should be more responsible and care more for our environment. its never too late for anything as long as you have the mind to change things not only for yourself but for everyone. lets be more cautious and be aware of the hazards that might affect the environment.

5. frinces (317) | 1 month ago | it is a natural catastrophe therefore, no one is to be blamed. even if we did not abuse our nature, the earth will still perish. it is a home in a tangible form. our real world is the eternity.

gelay07 (263) | 1 month ago | i strongly believe, man has to do with the worsening conditioning of our environment. industrial pollution is one, and of course other factors contributes to it. it maybe an evolution or whatever you call it like earths cycle but still humans are the main culprit for what we are experiencing in our environment. it is felt all over the world. like some ice cups or icebergs were detected melting due to too much heat.

gelay07 (263) | 1 month ago | natural occurrence is of course beyond mans control. what can be controlled is mans exploitation of the environment. less damage would have been prevented if not for mans exploitation. get it?

frinces (317) | 1 month ago | i agree. what u mean is, if not in man's cruelty to the nature, the earth should have been preserved and it would be a safer place to live in not only for us but also for our future generation. got it!

6. dekada80 (364) | 1 month ago | I agree, it's sad but everybody is trying to survive without thinking whether he's way of surviving is damaging or not, like for example those who are squatting on the riverside along marikina river, serving as obstruction to the supposed to be smooth flow of water, deforestation not only by the big ones but also the small ones who is trying to make a living by making coals out of the trees they burned, improper disposal of garbage, poor implemental of the law on waste disposal, land conversions, building of structures like those standing in the marikina rivers thus again blocking the flow of water, I just hope it's not to late for an effective action that will minimize devastation specially after arrival of every typhoons.

gelay07 (263) | 1 month ago | land developers should also be given strict regulations. These people should try to practice environmental consciousness by probably have a portion of the developed areas grow trees or greens in the surroundings. anything that would hold water in case of floods, proper implementation of these regulations would eventually help our nature. thank you all for the response.. appreciated it.

7. airasheila (120) | 1 month ago | Hi gelay07. We cannot blame mother nature for what is happening now. Besides, when God created it, the nature is extremely perfect. I think, people are just too imaginative and creative that leads to the deforestation of our nature. Let me share this passage that I heard from our Priest: GOD always forgives..Man sometimes forgives..but, Nature never, never forgives.

8. calai618 (673) | 1 month ago | It is very sad to admit it but YES, we are definitely the ones to be blamed for everything that is happening against us right now. Our love for infrastructures, our insensitivity and our selfishness are now haunting us. It is not even apprpriate to describe what's happening to us as "Act of God" because God I'm sure never wanted to destroy the forests, pollute the waters and all that. Everything that had happened should be taken against us. It is us who started ruining our lives..:(

10. boybato (438) | 1 month ago | There's nobody else to be blamed but us, the people. Mother nature is not actually having her revenge, those typhoons are natural phenomenon that will occur with or without our forests ripped off and the drainage system clogged. The flash floods and landslides were just a natural reaction. No more trees and very bad drainage systems would really mean landslides and floods. How do we stop it? As of now, nothing much. We can all start slow and small by planting trees. Hmm. How about this? Each adult aged 18 and above plant at least 2 trees. Pretty sure that's not too much to do but considering the number of people aged 18 and above, that's a lot of trees already. It all takes a little action for it to work and restore mother nature. With what just happened recently, pretty sure the people, especially the government and cause oriented groups were alarmed and already learned the lesson but I'm wondering why some "greening" or "tree planting" activities aren't promoted very well in the Philippines. There's nobody else that can help us but we ourselves. We're the people first hand affected if landslides and floods occur yet we're doing nothing to at least prevent it other than hoping that a typhoon will never cross the Philippines' path.
