Underscored words

I haven't been able to spend a lot of time here lately, but I've recently noticed that some works in posts come out with a double underscore. Can anyone tell me why? Is there a formula for choosing words to be underscored? What's the purpose?

They are keyword advert links. Run your mouse over one and you'll get a little pop - up window - most of the time anyway, sometimes not.
