When the word 'need' conjures up in ones mind the first thought goes to those who are poor. But the needy could be in different categories - What is your concept of the 'needy'?

I think needy can go beyong financial need. Some people are needy because they are lonely or sad. I think anyone who can't afford a roof over their head, or food to eat or clothes to wear are all needy in a financial sense. There are some people that are poor and struggle because they can not manage money right. I don't think they are needy I think they lack the knowledge or ability to manage money.

You have understood the real meaning of NEED! Even though financially independent they lack the infrastructure to get on with their lives and this category needs attention too.

To me, the needy are the children and the very old and infirm. Children are the future of our society and I see so many of them from very poor families…they have no chance to education and good food and in their growing years, they invariably take to petty crimes which leaves a far reaching impact on society. I have actually thought of joining any organization which helps in voluntarily educating street children for free. I don’t have time on my hands right now, but post-retirement, I’m seriously going to give this a thought. The old and infirm are another section that really needs our attention. Feeble and aged, they have done their bit in their youth, yet many of them are so lonely that they don’t even have anybody to call the doctor if they fall sick. For various reasons, their family and kids have moved away and they are left at the mercy of fate. Society should collectively do something to give them company and care. Very recently, my son’s school has started a movement by ex-students, who visit former teachers who are aged and lonely or in need of help. I feel this is a wonderful gesture and the students (all established now) themselves admit that they are successful mainly because of the efforts of their teachers and its their small contribution to make the old days of their former teachers, a little better. I feel if all schools had similar such programmes by ex-students, it would do a lot in alleviating old-age loneliness and helplessness.

Focus should now be on those who are not covered under security and are not in the list of any NGo.s Most of those that you have mentioned are covered by these organisations excepting the old and lonely who though financially independent do not have the infastructure to help them get on with their day to day life with dignity. The Senior Homes that we see require a second look as they fall short of many needs that old crave for. Thank you for your response.

To me, the needy is anyone that is struggling to keep a roof over their heads. There are so many out there right now. It is such a shame that we send money overseas to help other countries when our own are struggling so bad.

There are rules and regulations that bar many that you have mentioned to get the help that they need. NGOs need to re-examine their parameters that qualify for such grants. Just having a job is one such bottleneck that bars several from getting any help.

allknowing the needy to me are the people this horrid economy has thrown out of apartments and houses because the breadwinners were laid off and had their homes foreclosed or were evicted. there are families literally on the street because the workers are without jobs and places to live. get them jobs, help ease them into apartments at once by making a deal with apartment owners to cut some slack on the first couple of months rent. for instance do not demand last payment nor security deposit, instead work those in much later when the worker has had a chance to receive several months wages and can then pay a little more on each month's rent.Do something real for homeless families, not just sit and yap about it for six months or a year, they need help at once.Either have people who truly want to help band together at community level or go straight up to congress or perhaps state level but do something real, now, this is when it is needed.

I think the needy are who is around you in need no matter what it may be. My needies are the musicians I work with. It's like herding cats sometimes...haha but seriously, some people that are needy really would be better off not getting help to start helping themselves. Some people are in serious need. The basics food and shelter, now that is someone in need.

To Me, Helping the Needy could be a number of things, like for example, a friend who needs some money to pay thier bills, or an Orginization that donates money to help others or find cures, or there is of course the Homeless which we see littering our streets asking for Money or a Cig. I often wonder if they truley ended up on the street themselfs or even they were pushed into it by someone and just cant get out of thier situation.. so many questions as far as Helping the Needy. That truely can be anyone or anything :)
