WHAT?! Walmart Is Selling WHAT?! email this discussion to a friend?

I was at my computer last night playing some games and wanted to turn on the radio so I had to open up a browser to do so and lo and behold at what I saw!! Walmart is selling caskets online only!! I had to do a double take and was flabbergasted!! I hollered for hubby to come and check this out and he couldn't believe his eyes either!! What a all around happy store which goes from engagement rings to baby clothes to caskets. I don't know about you but I get this feeling it's going to become the mainstream thing before too long and before you know it, Walmart will have it in the stores to display! Ewwwwww!! Creepy!! Not to mention, so close to Halloween? Now that makes it even more creepy!!Now say I order one, what do they do with the body till the casket gets there? It could be a week before it actually arrives. Refrigerate it until the funeral? Too weird!

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree?

OMG they have a whole line of caskets - starting at $895 to $2900. I thought I had seen it all but I really do believe this takes the cake! I seen people get married at Walmart are they going to start burying them there too? Well I think they win the prize for seller everything from A - Z. I wonder what the funeral home will say when you tell them Walmart will be delivering the casket? Where would store it if you purchased early? Will they let you put it on lay away? Do they come with a warranty and can you return it? Do they ever go on sale? Oh I could go on forever. Thank you so much for posting this link.

myLot reputation of 95/100. CatsandDogs (5127)   ranked 1 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

I can't believe it either. There again, they may be trying to help the ones who can't afford a decent casket for their loved ones and here their chances are better in getting one. I had one grave yard director tell me many years ago and it really took hold in my memory and that was, why buy an expensive casket that's water proof and bug proof and so on because our bodies are made of mostly water anyway so when we decay, out body turns to water so getting a casket that water proof is just a waste of hard earned money. Now this came from a grave yard director so for him to tell me this, it does have a lot of truth in it.
But like you, this does take the cake! I don't know who delivers it other than it's considered freight so I'd imagine UPS or something like that would be transporting it to it's needed location. I doubt they have lay away since they supposedly mark their prices the lowest they can go so they don't need any sales. Why would you need a warranty? lol The person who needs it is dead, they wouldn't know if it's a defect or not. I'm just shaking my head at this whole concept! It's crazy!!

I "rented" a casket when my husband died, just for the funeral, as he wanted to be cremated and it cost $900, that was fourteen years ago, and it was in a small town. I understand and have experienced that the funerals in my town are cheaper than in a large city.

"Layaway" strikes my funny bone. lol

Weird! My family won't be using that service--we're all going to be cremated after our bodies are harvested for usable organs. Then we'll fertilize someone's garden or a forest as our bodies are meant to do!

It's no surprise to me that they're getting into the casket business but it could also be a Halloween joke.

myLot reputation of 95/100. CatsandDogs (5127)   ranked 1 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

It's no Halloween joke! Check out the link! It's for real as you and I are right now. It's only an online thing, it's not at the stores. I'm guessing they're trying to help the ones who can't afford a casket and now they can? I don't know but I do think it's a bit way off the "list of things to buy" from this type of store but there again, the world is changing as we speak so why not this. I do know it's going to take some time to get used to.
I'm not sure what I want done with my body. I DO want my usable organs to be harvested for the ones who need them for they'll be no use to me once I'm gone however, beyond that, I'm not really sure. My hubby didn't want to be cremated at first and for a long time but since his mom and step dad died last year and both have been cremated, he's kind of leaning towards that direction now.
I asked my mom if she wanted to be cremated and her response was "HELL NO! I don't want to be cremated!" surrender lol Oooookaaaaay mom! Got the drift here! lol The reason I asked and told her so was because their burial sites that they had bought and paid for is 4 hours away so I had wondered how we're going to get their bodies up there once they left this world. She told me that they have some life insurance which should pay for the trip since everything else will be paid for except for the casket and funeral home. That gave me a great deal of peace of mind because I was really concerned about that. Then as we were talking, she said something to the effect "Your brothers should help you" I looked away and said under my breath, "Yeah right, that'll be the day" and she snapped "They better help you! It's not all yours and hubby's job! They better help damn it!" I told her "They haven't helped this past year and a half, in fact, one hasn't help in anything at all and the other only helped dad when he needed it and neither have helped down here at all so what makes you think they'll help then?" I got the same response out of her. So I just accepted it for what it was, I KNOW BETTER! Besides, what can she do about it once she's gone? Not a damned thing so hubby and I are getting prepared for it so we'll know what to do and where to go and so on.

myLot reputation of 98/100. dragon54u (9544)   ranked 30 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

What a shame! You could use her ashes to fertilize your flower garden and enjoy her all year round. I know this sounds flippant but it's not meant to be. Her body would be right there, providing you with the joy of living things.

Or you could have her compressed into a diamond and wear it on a necklace.

You could scatter "her" over a place she's never been so she can "visit" it.

I kind of like the idea of the diamond. Too bad--lots of older people don't think of it as taking up good farmland, to them it's the proper way to treat an empty shell.

myLot reputation of 95/100. CatsandDogs (5127)   ranked 1 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

Actually (which I forgot to add) she wants to donate her body to medical science but dad won't hear of it. She's worked in the medical field years ago and knows what the needs are and is why she wants to do this but won't because dad is so dead set against it.

myLot reputation of 98/100. mentalward (4267)   ranked 6 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

Dragon, that's what I want done with my body. I want to be cremated, have my ashes collected in an old mayonnaise jar and brought home so I could be sprinkled in the garden. If there is any psychic connection between "us" and our bodies after death, I think I'd love knowing that my body will still be, uh, 'gardening'. blinklol

I read that, too. Before long, WalMart will be the ONLY store around! I'm wondering just how they handle that kind of thing, too, about dying and not having the casket ready yet. Maybe they want people to buy them before they're needed and kind of just blend them into the decor like a coffee table or something until they're needed. blink

Maybe people could buy them and sleep in them until the time came when they'd just stay put instead of getting up and going about their day? confused I'm sure there are plenty of weirdos who will be buying them just to have some fun with them, until the time came to use them for real, of course.

What next? Autos? Space ships? I'd kinda like to see them selling hovercrafts. I'd definitely buy one of those! Hey! A hovercraft would make so much more sense, wouldn't it? I mean, they could be transportation, then work as a coffin when the time came! Of course, with the way so many people drive these days, it would probably become a coffin way before the owners were ready. I mean, hovering right into power lines and stuff. doh

myLot reputation of 98/100. mentalward (4267)   ranked 6 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

Oh, I forgot something. Many years ago, while shopping at WalMart not long after they came to our area, an employee said to me, "If WalMart doesn't carry it, you don't need it." I guess too many people complained that, since they didn't carry caskets, and caskets are kind of needed for many people at the end of their lives, then that statement was wrong. Instead of being wrong, they just added caskets to their plethora of goodies. Hmmm... confused

myLot reputation of 95/100. CatsandDogs (5127)   ranked 1 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

Well even if Walmart has it, doesn't mean it's a great kind such as vacuum cleaners, I like electrolux because it really cleans the floors like I want them to be clean and walmart doesn't sell that. lol I agree, before long, walmart will be the only store with all that they have to sell. What's next? A funeral parlor? doh lol
Now I'm coping and pasting something that I want you to see. I think you'll find it right interesting. It's only an online thing, it's not at the stores. I'm guessing they're trying to help the ones who can't afford a casket and now they can? Marti you are so funny about blending the coffin in as furniture unti we need it. I can just see some throw pillows on top and maybe if we have company we could open it up and sleep in it while they sleep in our bed. I would not want anyone sleeping in my coffin before I make it my permanent resting place. OH and I too like your new avatar. When did you change to red hair?

myLot reputation of 98/100. mentalward (4267)   ranked 6 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

I want to be cremated, too, Cats. I'm an organ donor so, hopefully, they'll be able to get something that still works from me to give to someone else when the time comes. I chose cremation because I can't see spending so much money on a burial for a body when the person who used that body is no longer in it. I'd rather see that money going to my kids.

Now, let's see, I'll try to remember who said what so I can answer here.

First, because it's right in my forebrain, I haven't changed my hair color but I couldn't get just the right color for my "cartoon me". My hair is darker than it was but, as it darkens, it's getting redder. Weird, I know. But, my hair has always gotten redder in the winter and blonder in the summer. I guess it simply could never make up it's mind. My youngest son has hair exactly like mine. I used to play with my hair some, making it blonder at one time and redder at another time but now it's the real me... something in-between red and dark blonde. I'm getting up there in years and I've seen too many older women who color their hair and it looks so fake. I mean, when the body and face age but the hair doesn't, it's easy to tell that it's colored. I want each one of my white hairs (there aren't many but there are some) to be proudly worn. I've earned every one of them! LOL

I'd like to make a cartoon me from an actual photo of myself but I haven't seen anything that can do that. There was a program in Yahoo that did that but I don't think they have that anymore since they got rid of their public photo storage. I played with a photo of my husband and me when we were married, turning it into a drawing-like picture but that was before Yahoo changed.

Cats, my parents had their funerals all paid for, caskets included. The only thing I had to pay for was the opening and closing of the, uh, whatever it's called above-ground, kind of like an apartment building for the deceased. (I hate my brain when I can't remember the word I want!)

myLot reputation of 98/100. mentalward (4267)   ranked 6 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

Dragon, sorry. My brain doesn't work very well these days. Memory problems. Anyway, I've been very busy for the past few weeks. I haven't spent much time on myLot because I've been going through all my stuff, eliminating everything I don't need or want. Times, they are a-changing and I want to be ready for them when they do.

Also, for some unknown reason, I've been into a baking thing. I've been baking quite a lot! Maybe it was the carrot cake I made from scratch that actually LOOKED good that inspired me, I don't know. I never could make a cake from scratch that looked good. They tasted okay but they looked horrible! One was only about 2" high... WITH icing! One had a layer of rubbery-like stuff on the bottom. There was like a 1/4" layer of something on the bottom. I peeled it off (yes, it really did stretch!) and the cake tasted fine but I still don't know what caused that stretchy layer! I made an angelfood cake once that looked more like swiss cheese than cake. It had huge holes all through it! It, too, tasted okay but looked bad. Anyway, I made a carrot cake a few weeks back that not only tasted good but LOOKED good! LOL It inspired me to bake more stuff and I've been having a blast.

Things at home have been quiet. My husband has been busy working on his invention of creating an energy source to move vehicles without gas, water, electricity, or anything else except magnets and electromagnets. I think he may have actually stumbled onto something! He's been working on it for maybe 15 years and has changed his design many times since I've known him. His last design, which he's finishing up now, seems to be working! Maybe I should stick around, huh? If this thing actually works, we could potentially become billionaires, although I'd settle for millionaires. I'm not greedy. whistle

Wal-mart wants a piece of every cake. Guess they'll be embalming folks pretty soon in the back room. i'm sure they will be cheaper than the funeral home but i'll believe i will just stick w/them. I hate going to wal-mart anyway so don't want my last trip to be in a wal-mart casket, lol.

Hi Jo!! Now why wouldn't you like a walmart casket? LOL You won't know a thing about it!! rasp I'm just teasing you sweetie! I have wondered the same thing, what's next? A funeral Parlor? If they start that crap, I won't go there any more! Ewwwww!! I have a horrible fear of funeral homes and hearses, especially hearses!! I don't want to be in either one but I do understand the funeral home part but not the hearse!! I don't care how they get me to my "final" destination as long as they don't put me in the hearse, funeral home is one thing but the hearse is a definite no no. Can you believe that my middle brother, the one that I'm not talking to, feels the same way? I don't know what caused us to feel this way but we both do. doh

Ewwww, it is kind of creepy. Like they have always said, you can find anything at Walmarts, I guess they really mean it. I wonder how a funeral home would handle that, when you tell them you will supply your own casket. I wonder if you can buy them on ebay, ebay is another place you can find anything. Take care Cats, xoxo

What's next? A funeral parlor? Now if that happens and on the same property walmart is on, I won't go there anymore!! doh

No no no no, I agree, I don't like it either Thoroughrob and I do hope that's as far as they go.

Ok I think you are not looking at this from an angel I have been in. Guess what people leave these things go forever and then it is to late for one. And after that you can be out 1,000 just to rent one for an hour like I was when my uncle passed and I was in charge. I remember when my grandmother passed in the 80's and it was under 3,000 for the whole funeral including burial now I had to choose cremation for there just was no funds to bury him with since I was not getting any help from his children or much of anyone. Choosing cremation was the best way to go and a way to keep him around really even that was expensive. I spent 5,615 just for a 1 hour showing which was 1,000 for the coffin rental and I did the flowers saving me 500 and I also did the music and made sure everyone knew he had passed of course most of his friends were gone so there was not to many to notify but I took the time to look them all up and make sure and remember I was grieving while doing this and taking care of five children and two friends who grew to love him so from killing themselves over his passing. This extra that Wal-mart is providing is much over due in fact it reminds me of a story I ran across a few years ago of a grandson and his grandfather's funeral and after that he started his own business of living caskets where they are made for death and used the whole time in life weird yes but think of an entertainment center then breaking it down when the time comes for your coffin very practical after all we only use the casket once why not find ways to use them until we need them and get our money's worth. We could also buy our flowers before hand and use them when we die then and that cuts the cost of 2 things down after all most people do not have enough to bury themselves when the time comes. I applaud Wal-marts for taking the time to care for our needs. Just a few things to really think about and then maybe you can see the need and a way also to keep a company just one step ahead of the others.

Hi birdlady, hon I'm so sorry you had to do this all by yourself!! How selfish can one's children be? Wow. Kuddo's to you my friend! You had to be one strong person to handle so much. You know, that's what they say about me, I must be strong with all I've had to take on. I don't know if I consider myself that because I get so flustered easily but I do manage with help from my husband. My parents aren't well at all in which I think both are on borrowed time so in a sense, it's a good thing to know that I could get a casket/coffin at a cheaper price. Neither of them want to be cremated and their burial sites are 4 hours away in their old town so the only real expense I'll have is transportation and the funeral home because the rest they already paid for themselves.

Walmart is gross. Period. Every uncouth, horrible thing I hear they do I believe it. The merchandise they sell is junk. I owned a tent for 8 hours and it fell on my head three times. In some stores they sell guns and bullets in the next aisle. What's to prevent some crazy person from stealing a gun and going to the next aisle, loading it, and shooting up the store? Now they're in the funeral business. I don't care if it's only online. I certainly don't want my eternal resting place to be designed by Walmart and, by extension, some little kid from a developing country. Yes another reason to hate Walmart. Thank you.

myLot reputation of 95/100. CatsandDogs (5127)   ranked 1 out of 59 in death  1 month ago

You know, I can understand why a few people hate walmart but I have to say, they do have some things that are lower in prices than other stores and for that reason, I continue to buy from there. Now if I were to find it elsewhere cheaper, you can bet I'd shop there instead. Now if their caskets/coffins are cheaper than other places, you can bet I'll buy from there as well. Why make someone else richer by giving them our hard earned money when we could use it for other needed things or even donating it to some good cause? Just a thought is all.

$600.!! OMG!! and 11 years ago.... gee, I wonder how much they've gone up to now?! OUCH!! Hey, if walmart's caskets/coffins are cheaper then it's the way to go. I can't see making another richer and us poorer when we could keep the money for ourselves or even donate it to a good cause. It may not be top notch but hey, a casket is a casket. We're dead by the time we're in one. At least I hope to be! LOL
