What's With A Cat Eating Plastic? |
|
I have a beautiful six-year-old female tabby who has some strange eating behavior. She loves to eat plastic although it will make her throw up. I do my best to keep as much plastic out of the house as possible. Luckily I'm very environmentally conscious so I try to use canvas bags and don't take plastic when I'm shopping. My precious kitty still manages to find some plastic so she can purge herself. She's an indoor cat and only eats one type/brand of dry cat food.
Has anyone else ever had a cat do this?

2. NoirAngelique (238) | 3 months ago | I've never heard of this before. I did a search, though, because I couldn't remember the word*pica*, which is eating things that aren't food and apparently this one is known for cats along with wool and wood. Here is the link where I found it:
http://www.animalbehaviorassociates.com/dogs_feces.html
I think pica is sometimes related to diet, so if your kitty isn't too finicky, you could try giving her other kinds of foods, I guess. Or maybe even grow her some kitty grass in a pot inside. Course, if she's all about the plastic, she might ignore the grass. But you could try, if you haven't tried that one.

| Clicker625 (78) | 3 months ago | I couldn't get the link to open when I tried at midnight last night but it spurred me to do a search myself. I only opened results that were by vet doctors and I got some really good info. I learned that there were lots of cats that have a problem with eating plastic. One doc even said that a large number of the ones he had seen were the yellow and white ones. (Doesn't fit here. Mine's a tabby. But interesting info.) However, the advice I got was to do everything I could to keep her away from plastic as it can turn into a medical emergency if she doesn't throw it up. Also I learned that I need to be more vigilent about keeping the plastic out of my house. (very environmental anyway--just hard to do).
NoirAngelique: your advice about kitty grass reminded me that when I lived in an apartment with window sills and grew grass for her that it seemed to cut way down on the plastic eating. I hadn't tried to grow it since I moved to this high rise apartment--more trouble here--but I'm going to now.

NoirAngelique (238) | 3 months ago | Well, shoot, I couldn't get it to open either. So I went to the main site and tracked down the link. I put an*l* on the end, it's supposed to be htm, not html. Not being able to copy/paste here is driving me nuts for this very reason! Sorry about that! I will have to be more diligent when I'm typing out links!

| Clicker625 (78) | 3 months ago | Sounds like yours is quite the foodie! It's funny but, other than plastic, mine is extremely particular. The only thing she will eat is her cat food. She won't eat any other kind of food, canned food, etc. She won't even eat fish. Strange cat but I love her to pieces.
I want to thank everyone who responded to my problem. Writing it down and talking it over with ya'll helped me to see that I did have a problem that I needed to try to solve. I'm beginning to be more aware of the power of MyLot and MyLot friends.

4. tbmorris1 (143) | 3 months ago | My cat is obsessed with plastic stuff. She is also a tabby, indoor cat. We had to do a test run with some different brands of cat food because she kept having this awful hairballs. I got so sick of hearing her hack and having to clean up the mess that we decided to switch her food. It's a more expensive brand, Purina One Hairball Formula. She has minimal hairballs now, even though she still chews on PLASTIC!
Like someone else said, it can cause serious digestive problems for them! I always worry that she has eaten some plastic or something when she gets those hairballs. She loves to lay on plastic grocery bags, garbage bags, and will even get inside boxes that have plastic attached over the top of them. If she chews on any of it, she's scalded(verbally) and the stuff is thrown out. I want to look into getting her some cat grass, so she will have something to chew on that isn't harmful to her! It's also known to aid in digestion, which would help reduce hairballs!

| Clicker625 (78) | 2 months ago | Cleo, my cat's name, hasn't had trouble with hairballs but I'm wondering if I should try her on different cat foods to see if any seem to cut down her desire (no, "obsession" is a better word) for plastic. She eats Purina's Healthful Life Cat Chow, which isn't cheap. I think I'll look for some of those cat samples and try some.

5. sender621 (853) | 2 months ago | And here i thought i was the only one with crazy cats. We have a cat that would also love to chew on plastic. All it has to be a lollipop wrapper and the cat is after it. When i catch her, i try to get the plastic away from her and throw it away. I wonder what cats think plastic is anyway!

6. Aurone (2551) | 2 months ago | My indoor kitties don't eat plastic but they like to lick plastic. Don't know what it is. So I don't know why they do it. But growing some grass for your indoor kitty is always a good idea. They do need to purge the hairballs they sometimes get.

| Clicker625 (78) | 2 months ago | Yes, I had read that the animal fats in some plastics are attractive to some cats. As much as I dislike plastic I still find it hard to keep it totally out of my apartment...like you said, bread bags, etc.

10. jesssp (1265) | 2 months ago | My cat is a plastic fanatic. If she hears plastic crinkle she comes running. She doesn't usually eat it, I think she just likes to chew on it - it must feel good on her teeth or gums.
