My 4 year old has been running a fever since Tuesday. Pretty sure it's the flu. We went to Family Video and got him a bunch of movies to watch since they are free. He's been watching Nick Jr like a mad man. What else can a 4 year old do? He (and me) is going bonky being indoors 24/7. He has his high moments when he's feeling better and bounces off the walls. But then he has his low moments and does nothing but lay on the couch and tell me he's cold. He's already colored, we've played board games and card games. We even painted. Now what? He's missing preschool terribly. He even plays his computer games, but can only stand them for so long. I'm pretty sure at this rate we are going to be stuck in the house for the entire weekend. So, how about some ideas. Give us something to do! I do have a 16 monther that also gets into everything. So some of what my 4 year old does has to be on his own when I'm taking care of his little brother.

Hope he feels better soon! I am thinking it's probably best for him to do quiet activities - not so much the physical activities (my 4 year is a run around gal, so I know it's hard for her to not be physical) to keep him rested while he is sick. My daughter has never been sick in length, but some other activities I can think of: reading, puzzles (jigsaws, particularly the challenging kinds), crafts (like glueing or stickering), play doh (clay), rubber stamping, workbook pages with dot to dots or simple mazes, pretend play sets (like Little People or animals or cars) for pretend interacting, a table top mini sandbox (if you can make room with tarp on the floor for the mess), a tent made from a blanket/sheet over chairs (pretend camping?), picnicing on the floor, a big gigantic box for pretend play (rocket or house?), building blocks, music time (listening to a cd or playing instruments). Maybe ask him what he'd like to do too . . . that way he may play longer on his own so you can tend to your other little one. Good luck!!

I agree with you it should be quiet activities. And, like your 4 year old he's a run around type of kid. What 4 year old isn't? lol Thank you for all the ideas!

Bless his little heart, I hope that he starts to feel better soon. Now as far as activities, we were always allowed to do the things that we typically did when we were playing inside while we were sick. The television rules were loosened up a bit so we did get to watch more television. We were allowed to color, draw, paint more than we usually got to do. Also, when we weren't feeling well, I remember having more interactive play with my parents. My mother would get down on the floor with me and play Barbies, although in your son's case it is more likely to be cars or trains.
From my own experience, I don't really have any. I do have two children, but luckily they have been healthy for the most part so I haven't had to deal with days on end of being sick.

Thank you. He is still running his fever. And your right, we do more interactive play while he is sick. Thanks again for responding!

The first thing that I would suggest is to check his symptoms to make certain that it isn't the H1N1 virus that he has. Once you find that out, there are a number of things that you might be able to do together to keep him busy. One of the things that I have started to do with my daughters is to make Christmas decorations, it is just around the corner,LOL. Another thing that you might want to try doing with him is visiting the Nick Jr website. They have a lot of games based on the cartoon characters which he might find fun for an hour or so. Another thing might be to make some cookies, I know that when my little ones aren't feeling to great, making cookies always seems to make them feel better, then again who wouldn't feel better eating warm chocolate chip cookies with a nice cold glass of milk? I would also suggest making some coloring posters that he can color and put up on his wall. I hope that he is feeling better soon and that you guys figure out what you want to do, happy mylotting.

Thank you. He has had 2 rapid flu tests done and they have both come up negative. They will no longer do the H1N1 test anymore they said. Which I didn't like hearing. You have some great ideas! Thanks again!

The most important to a young kids whenever they are sicked is to feed them regularly so they won't get weak. We all knew that most of children when they are sicked they don't have appetizer. Food supplement is very important to avoid them from being weak.

Kids getting sick drive me crazy. I am not a mother myself but I have been taking care of my niece's kids since birth. I treat them like my very own. Seeing them sick disheartens me. It is a good thing that we have a sister nurse at home. At least, we would have an idea of what to do. But I must say, the best thing is to have the baby checked-up by a doctor.

Thanks. He has been to the Dr twice and will probably be headed back there again on Monday as he is not getting better. I agree, it's so sad to see them sick. They don't feel good and there's really nothing you can do about it except hold them and love them.

i have two children who often experience mild illness such as colds and coughs. The first, i hope that these kids get better soon. The second, if the child fever, immediately give them such febrifuge paracetamol and cold water compresses to the forehead. If the child continued to shiver and fussing, carrying arms immediately so that the child feels comfortable and can sleep soundly. Flu is disease caused by viruses, and there is no cure for it. drugs that are sold, just painkillers. So soon disappeared flu, body resistance to strenghened by feeding a nutritious and adequate rest. So give these child a nutritious drinks like milk and make him/her to always sleep well in order to to get well.

Kids when sick wants to be cuddled and assured that you will always be there to give them comfort. Actually it's not the medicines that made them feel better and good-- it's our tender loving care.

I just hope and pray that your baby is better or fine now!

What I do with my son, of course, keep check on his symptoms, check his temperature every 2/4 hours and keep tylenol in him. I know once that kicks in mine usually takes a nap and sleeping, resting is best remedy for a cold/flu. If his fever went away for a whole day or two, then came back higher..with chills, please visit the doctor or ER that is a sign of the H1N1. With a 16 month old also home, find things they could do together, play with cars and trucks, legos, make crafts with both of them, put little one in high chair so can't move or run away:)) Activity sheets, movies, hand held games, puzzles, books he can look at, play doh, magic sand, water paint/finger paint, markers (washable stuff), scanvenger hunts, hide n seek, wrestling figures/soliders, bring outdoors in my son liked to get a leaf and then put a paper on top of it and then color over the leaf and see the leaf print on the paper, play with sand in a small box on the table, play with cool whip on the table and draw in it or use shaving cream, make holiday decorations or crafts that he can give to family, friends, and teachers. I have a bunch of others that my son did in preschool and we also done at home. Just can't remember everything on top of my head. Hope this is a good start.
