Yep my parents gave me that line. And sometimes my daughter can make me want to scream bloody murder but she is a good kid at the end of the day.

dawnald yes sometimes we just do not have patience with a loved one and the pain they have until we come down with something painful ourselves. My dad had severe arthritis when I was in my teens. I remember getting teed off as he could not do things when I wanted to because of his arthritis. It never really entered my self centered young mind that that pain was really bad, but when I grew up, and started having arthritis in my knee I wished my dad was alive so I could tell him I now understood. My table mate has gout, and shes maybe forty, and she tells me her feet hurt her so bad,and now I can sympathize as I do know what pain feels like in my own arthritic joints. She moves like she is in pain and uses a walker. A likable lady from the phillipines,we enjoy talking to each other.

I hope you have checked to see you don't have cancer in your spine like my sister-in-law. She went to chiropractors and message therapist for over two years before they decided something really bad was wrong. You can also have these back pains like my wife had and it really is just you are low on Serotonin or hormones. When my wife started taking medicine for stress most of that pain went away and just the normal pain from a bad back is all she experiences now.

I am so sorry that Richard (I'm assuming he's your husband?) has gout. I just read about it on Wikipedia and I have to say that it sounds like a terrible disease and I wouldn't wish it on anyone either.

The only thing, lately, that I wish is that someone...for 1 hr....could BE me and feel the hurt I feel so they would know what it feels like and keep their hippocracy to themselves. That's all.............

Yep...That is what I heard from my parents too. I was told this when I was a teenager and they wouldn't let me do something that I wanted to do. My mom said you will understand my feelings when you have your own kids. Boy..was she right..Im not sure if I have put that curse on my kids..LOL..

I think it is hard to understand until you have the same thing happen to you. Gout is painful, my grandma had it alot. She would almost be in tears, just trying to walk.

Gout is one of the worst pains that I have ever experienced. The first attack is usually the worst but the subsequent ones are very little better. It's actually a kind of rheumatism (so I'm told) and is due to crystals of urea forming in the joints (especially the big toe joint ... don't ask me why!)

I first got gout ten or twelve years ago. There was no warning - just one morning I woke with a very painful foot and when I went to put weight on it ... OUUUUCH!!!

We called work and the doctor (who grumbled that I should get into the surgery but consented to a home visit when we explained that I couldn't walk). He prescribed a little orange pill (diclofenac potassium) which I now make sure I have a supply of.

I don't get the gout frequently - perhaps about twice a year - and when I feel a twinge coming on, I just pop the pills for a day or so. They aren't anything very sophisticated - just an anti-inflammatory, basically, and used more i9n horse-medicine than in human medicine (or so I understand).

Yes, I can guarantee that gout beats anything like period pains or birthing pains hollow! There's not a lot you can do to stop it once you have been afflicted but it's a good idea to avoid red meat especially (and too much protein as a general rule). It isn't really associated with alcohol (as is often said) but with 'high living' generally (which usually meant a diet of plenty of meat and expensive alcohol, hence the myth that it's caused by port).

sometimes we have to wak in he shoes of another person before we know what they are going through. I am so sorry that he has gout though - I have heard that it is awful pain.
