He has had a fever for 5 days now. The highest was this morning at 103.3. He's 4 years old. We've been to the Dr twice now. Both time they tested for strep and flu. Both times it came back negative. The Dr did tell me that the rapid flu test is only 50% accurate. They don't test for H1N1 anymore they said. He's coughing more and more and has a stuffy nose that he cries about. My biggest concern is this fever that won't go away. It has broken once. And that was yesterday. And his asthma. I keep waiting for him to have breathing issues, but so far, Praise the Lord he has not. He's not eating. He's lost 2 lbs in 4 days. He is drinking. Like a fish. lol
So what is this? It can't just be a cold. I've never heard of a cold like this before. Or had one like this. Dr said to bring him back on Mon if he still has a fever. That's SIX days of fever! That's kind of crazy if you ask me. But....what do I do?

If he gets worse, get him into emergency. It could be something as simple as a viral infection. Or it could be any other kind of infection, which will not show up in normal tests. For example, even if he has a stomach infection, there could be a fever. Get his ESR checked. If it's high, that will prove that there's an infection. I would still suggest getting him into emergency - maybe if not at the usual place, try some other place. Hope he recovers soon.

myLot reputation of 71/100. menolly22 (132)   ranked 645 out of 1,611 in general health  2 months ago

Thank you so much for your response. What is an ESR? Is that the white blood cell count? I had wanted that yesterday, but the Dr said that there was no need because he looked fine. I thought, well, jeez, you don't see him at night when his fever sky rockets and he just lays there.

myLot reputation of 78/100. joynatarajan (219)  2 months ago

You can get more information on ESR at
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003638.htm

It's refers to the rate at which the red blood cells precipitate during a period of one hour. It helps figure out what underlying infections there are - anything ranging from rheumatism to sinusitis.

Doctors are usually never there when you need them. In India, since our treatment doesn't depend on insurances and stuff, you can get emergency treatment as well as tests done anywhere....plus its not too costly. I'm not very sure of how it is where you are staying. Most insurances cover ESR tests (it comes under the bunch of tests called "TC, DC and ESR"), but again, it's not usually done without a doctor's recommendation.

Does the doctor's place have an emergency unit where you can take your son at night? Will it help if you take him over when his fever is at the highest, since then the doctor will be able to check it out?

myLot reputation of 78/100. joynatarajan (219)  2 months ago

It would also help if you tested out for insect-borne fevers such as Malaria or Dengue, since both of these do not have constant fever, and the fever usually goes up during the evenings or nights.

The first task would be to put your son into IV fluid or dextrose, that is to prevent further dehydration and rehydrate him. he needs to be in a clinic or hospital for that. Fever is a result of body infection, answer this, Is his Lips very dry and very flaky, is the fever on and off, what time of day is it usually the highest, is his tummy is like bloated even just a bit.

myLot reputation of 71/100. menolly22 (132)   ranked 645 out of 1,611 in general health  2 months ago

Thank you for responding! He is still drinking plenty of fluids. He's not eating though. I can't even get him to eat Jello with mounds of whip cream. So he's no dehydrated. His tummy is not bloated at all. His fever is ongoing. Constant. It's lower in the morning and raises in the evening and nighttime.

myLot reputation of 73/100. mrfdg1972 (510)  2 months ago

the doctor was right, your son's immune system is taking care of the infection, Gatorade will be very helpful, even if he does not eat as long he takes a lot of gatorade he will recuperate, Have you tried wipe him with cold cloth in ice water, that will lower his fever and will regain his cravings for food, try to feed him when his fever is low, fried chicken is high in protein your son will surely love that. try experimenting with lots of dishes which he likes to eat, ask him what he wants to eat.And I am sure all kids who are sick are in someway not interested in eating. Do not be alarmed your son is doing great, why i said that, because he was not admitted in the hospital w/c means it not that serious case to be confined.

If I were you I would be taking him to the emergency room. Its a second opinion because with the H1N1 you can't take a chance especially since he has asthma. That is a long time to have such a high fever. Its great that he is drinking so it keeps him hydrated but I would not take any chances and I would get to the ER. Good Luck and God Bless. I hope he will be better real soon.

I don't mean to push your panic button but I think you need a second opinion. I have had similar issues minus the broken nose but I am older and the only logical explanation the doctor gave me was that I had a viral infection. Later on, I found out that I have issues with my immune system that's why it took me a month to be completely rid of fever.

I was also dehydrated, had a loss of appetite, cold, fever and my bones were very painful. Your son is very young. The reoccurring fever could do damage to his health so do take him to another doctor.

I hope his fever resolves soon.

Hi MENOLLY,

As you have told that you are already been to the Doctor twice,
then of course he is the right person to give the proper treatment
and also he is the one to give the proper diagnosis to your son.
Look like Viral fever and you need to starts some antibiotics in order
to control the infection and also you may need the tylenol syrup to reduce
the body temperature too. When your son has the flu then it must stay in
out body for the period of 1 week and then will disappear. So wait till
Monday and check the condition, otherwise better to visit to the doctor
again for the further consultation.

Have a nice day.

A fever is a sign that the body is trying to fight off a virus or bacteria. The body creates extra heat so it can't survive. Having a fever means it is fighting off something. With that said, a warm bath will reduce a fever to make them feel more comfortable, however, it is not desirable when someone is fight off an infection. The part of the brain that controls temperature is not fully developed in children. A more effective way to reduce temperature is to take off clothes and let it escape naturally. Make sure your child drinks plenty of clear liquids. This is more important than eating. Eating solid foods during a fever should be avoided. Feed a cold starve a fever is the saying. Getting rest and sleep is important to let the body heal. Avoid iron or zinc as it is not absorbed when you have a fever. Do not give your child asprin to reduce the fever. Let it run it's course.

I have found doctors are of little to no help. It is a guessing game with them.

I would try some natural cures: Swab your child's nose with warm/hot salt water, that is the simplest way to clear out toxins, have your child gargle with hot salt water (as hot as possible with out burning), take a clove of garlic, peel it and let stand out for 20 minutes then have your child swallow it whole like a pill. Get your child to drink hot drinks like tea or chicken broth. Spicey foods are also good to get rid of a runny nose and combat congestion, if you can get the child to do it.

Hope this helps.

Hi menolly22. I also have a 3 year old so I can imagine how worried you must be. I don't have any advice as I am not an expert or anything. I just wanted to give a shout out and prayers that you get through the weekend. Or better yet, that your son get better during the weekend and that the Monday visit will just be a formality.

myLot reputation of 71/100. menolly22 (132)   ranked 645 out of 1,611 in general health  2 months ago

Thank you for the prayers. Last night was the worst as the cough has gotten worse and he was crying due to ear pain. I believe he's getting an ear infection on top of it all. Thank God for Tylenol! Today, he seems fine, other than the cough. Quite weird. But now his younger brother is running a fever. Ugh

Sorry to here you are having so much trouble with fever in your child maybe this will help you with that. I know when my child runs fevers we usually get a bottle of alcohol and begin to rub them down ever few hours just like a wash bath. it works for us but it sure sounds like swine flu to me of everything I have heard from those who have had or experienced it. Make sure you start a vaporizer in the house so help with breathing even if he is not showing signs of a problem that way maybe avoid one. I know when we lived in a trailer which we do now again we would take soup cans and wash them out and put water in them to avoid drying air sometimes we added vick vapor rub to it as a vaporizer every time the heat would kick on. This helps with nose bleeds for my kids get them quite a bit. Hope this helps you and if I think of anything else I will let you know.

Thank you. We are running a cold mist vaporizer for him in his room at night. Last night was the worst. I believe he now has an ear infection on top of it all. Back to the Dr we go! And I agree, all the symptoms seem to be the same as the swine flu. I just wish the Dr's would have tested for that anyway.
