Plastic Grocery Bags and Greening the Planet

United States

Last evening during one of my few interactions with the boob tube I saw a commercial about the 'Greening of the Planet' by not using those plastic grocery tote bags..And being a bit askew in my thinking I thought about it beyond the content of the commercial and couldn't help but wonder if using canvas or paper bags was really going to accomplish much in toting home fruit juices, water, milk, munchies, marjarine, yogurt, frozen dinners, meats, sodas, canned fruits/vegetables, soups, dry goods, candies, cheeses, dry goods and such which are all packaged in plastic containers which will invariably find a permanent home in a landfill somewhere.. The question is..Am I correct in thinking that this commercial is totally inane? or Has my 'half bubble off plumb' mind drifted closer to the full bubble experience? Enjoy!

I agree with you on the way things are packaged, although some companies are starting to reduce the plastic and trying to use more recycled materials for their products. But reducing the plastic bags we use is one of those little things we all do as individuals, that add up to a big difference. If I am only running in for a few things I will take a canvas tote bag, but I have a teenage son and his friends to feed. And do team dinners for the sports team 2 or 3 times a month, I'd need tons of those canvas bags. Those shopping trips I ask for paper bags that I recycle a dozen different ways. One of my favorite stores doesn't use bags at all, they box up your stuff for you in boxes made from recycled materials..I love giving them my business, just by shopping there I reduce a little of my family's fooprint.

Hi jewels49, That is what they used to do when I was about five or six put everything in a Cardboard Box I´ve only just remembered that and all the rest of the Shopping in an old tatty Sports Bag. Companies here are reducing their Plastic usage and I already use a "trolley" thing so I really don´t use many plastic bags at all. It´s just when we go Shopping in the Bigger Stores is where the problem is as I cannot take my trolley thing there. Ok I use it and I don´t care who looks at me twice lol have been doing this for a long time to save overloading myself with heavy bags as they cause future Shoulder injuries. Here it seems to be an "odd thing" to use a trolley but I have long hilly slopes to walk up and down and almost all the women here use a Car and I don´t that´s the thing. Well at least I do exercise even if I don´t want to. Take care all.

Hi jewels49, Yes these Women are becoming really lazy lol and I am building muscle in the back of my legs without even wanting to. I have to be the only it seems that does this as on my way there and back and I usually take my time to get some fresh air while I´m at it I never see anyone doing what I´m doing. Everyone here uses their Car for Shopping and they all take their Cars down to the Supermarket and back again. It really is rare to see someone carrying Shopping here. Take care jewels.

nothing wrong with throwing in some cardio while doing your part to save the planet. Let them look from the windows of their exhaust spewing machines. You go girl!!

Here in my country we start a campaign to use rewashable bag instead of plastic bags. We have this thing called "bayong" that we use everytime we go to the market but that was before we got introduce to plastic bags. Now we starting to bring it back but now with the modern twist of using rewashable bags. Almost all the grocery stores are into this campaign, some also charges customers who still wants to use plastic bags.

Hi stephon, Now that is a really good idea as some of the things that you might buy like Red Peppers or Tomatoes get squashy and they stain the Bag that you are carrying it in and things like Rice and Sugar which are always awkward most times the Packet has a leak in it somewhere. We could have separate bags for each this way and just wash them out. I wish it would occur to them here at the moment I just go about being careful to put the heavy things at the bottom and the delicate things on the top.

I think reducing any kind of waste is a good start. But it has to go a whole lot further. There is way the heck too much wasteful packaging in our stores, starting with single serve items, but including anything that's not recyclable. I don't think the commercial is totally inane, just doesn't go nearly far enough.

Thank you..I just have a more long winded way of saying simple things sometimes and I go on record..again..to admit that it was not totally inane..again thanx..Enjoy!

Hi greenfeathers, Do you know what I think of all this plastic bag business sometimes? About two months ago they started their project to persuade us to stop using plastic bags for Shopping that is all very well so then I thought they would come up with some kind of recyclable plastic bag another kind more useful and "green friendly". Indeed they have not they are only coming up with Plastic Bags that you have to pay for and you can use again and again but not for that long either. So the only conclusion I can come to is that this is all a gimmick for them to pocket more money as there are none of these so called "green friendly Bags" appearing anywhere. My other question is that they are not answering is are those "new plastic Bags" recyclable this is indeed a mystery because no one is saying anything about that and they are pocketing more of our money. Shame on them. For my part I am trying to find a decent canvas Bag or those "fishing net" things but they have become really hard to find. Has anyone noticed this? What a whacky world we live in lol.

Hi greenfeathers, Well in the end I will find something a mixture of canvas bag and something else. What annoys me a bit is they are forever preaching about us and the misuse of this that and the other but they are not very forthcoming as to how they dispose of all this Garbage we separate and put in those special Bins. Take care all.

Whacky indeed!..As you mention it, I haven't seen the fish net bags either..hmm..and what canvas bags that are available are really too small for rational shopping, especially when one walks, as I usually do.. As for the money grubbing, it wouldn't surprise me. There's always a gimmick afoot...Thanx..Enjoy!

That's a different way to think about it for sure! I don't think that the commercial is totally inane. Although, I haven't seen it. They are probably saying save where you can when you can. Now, after saying that, I must confess that I do not use the canvas tote bags. I prefer the plastic. I use them to put poopy diapers in or to put in my bathroom trashcan. And I can't see getting many groceries in the tote bags either.

We likewise use them in small trashcans and when cleaning the litter box.. OK, I probably went a bit far to call it totally inane. I'm not so mindless yet that I don't realize that with something as large as changing generational habits and attitudes things are probably better done in small bites, like teaching children which, afterall, we are as we need be taught how to grow beyond our old habits/comfort zones into awareness of how those habits are affecting the ecological state of the world.. However, it is my nature to run with a notion until the logic stops rather than stopping where I am content with it, which is why I tend to go beyond other folks' boundries..Thanx..Enjoy!

Yes and Yes. :-) Yes, if everyone of us every time we go to the market or groceries use bags not the plastic ones but one that can be recycled. most of the department stores here in our place is suggesting to use bags that allows the grocers to bring again and use the next time you'll having your groceries. so instead of plastics, use bags. Yes, it is advisable to buy fruit juices, milk, munchies etc, etc, in big container to minimize garbage and to learn to recycle containers that can still be used. what happens in the garbage is that there are many small wrapper containers, sachets, and other small packages that contribute to the garbage we have. at the end, the will to contribute something to the environment is essential in each person. if we love our environment let us start from our selves.

Early this year, all use of plastic bags was banned in my State. We have to use cloth bags. If one has frozen/fridge food & are concerned about that heat, we can buy cooler bags. Supermarkets can sell recyclable plastic bags, if customers forget to bring their own bags. These range from 5c to 25c. Cloth bags are $1.00 & last a long time. I had to get used to brining my bags every time. Now I keep them in the boot of my car. We are all used to having our own bags now. It's a great idea.

Well, you're definitely right in your thinking, but at the same time - I think reducing the number of plastic poly bags out there is a GREAT idea. I heard one time a statistic - that there are 400,000 billion pounds of those plastic bags in land fills all over the world, which really just sickens me! So I think whatever progress they try to make is good progress in my opinion. It's true that alot of the things we buy come in containers that are sometimes NOT recyclable - but other times, they are. Like I'm pretty sure juice bottles (like the plastic ones), cans, and all that - can be recycled at home. I don't think there's any way to eliminate the middle man in that scenario, because we HAVE to receive our packaged foods.. in packages. lol. It only makes sense. But thankfully a lot of that stuff is recyclable.

Got a grocery bags we are using some time now. It helps keeping off that plastic bags from grocery stores. But if we do get some plastic bags every now and then. I just hope that more grocery stores would replace their plastic bags to recyclable paper bags.

Different companies are campaigning on how to help save mother nature even if some companies are the one contributing to its destruction they all make it up on the commercial making it an alibi in order to make sales of their products. So its up for people to believe their info commercial. Its also up to us how to do our part in order to save the environment in the end we will still be the one to suffer if we will abuse
