My First Long Run

So today I finished up week 5 of my training program for the half marathon, and I got to my first long run. 6 miles without stopping. I've come very close to this distance before, but always ended up not having time or something. But today it was going to happen, despite that I didn't really have the time for it (on the plus side, in coming weekends I will have plenty more time and will be able to easily squeeze in longer runs). It took me an hour and 4 minutes, but I managed to complete the 6 miles! Yay! Didn't stop for anything. Some guy thought I was nuts and must have come from back East though, because I was still wearing my shorts and tank top. It was only 50 degrees though, not too cold for the shorts yet. I was still sweaty by the end. Next week I've got another long run in the schedule, but I'll be doing a 10K which I think should count. Now at least I feel confident that I can run the 6.2 miles without having to stop for anything! Yay!

Wow,I am so impressed.I wish I could run. I have a hard time walking right now, need to get into some kind of shape. I would be in shorts too, running that hard. It is good that you have been planning this and that you have been working up to this. Congratulations.

I was just thinking about this today... about getting into shape and running. Because before, I was always someone who couldn't run. I could run for a little while, but only if I needed to get somewhere or something like that. But if I had to do a mile run at school, I thought it was torture. And even back in June when I first started really getting into running, I constantly questioned myself because I could barely even breathe sometimes. But now I realize that the thing with running is, it takes a lot of time to build up to it. And before I was always afraid of running because if I did it a little bit, I'd end up really sore. And then I wouldn't do it again for so long, that any fitness I gained was quickly lost. But then when I joined the running group I kept at it. And within 6 weeks I felt good at least for awhile while running. And now I can run somewhat far and not feel like I have to stop. So it's quite fun, but it definitely took a lot to build up to this. If I did it again, maybe I would have gone with one of the programs where you start out walking and then run a little bit. But I'm kind of glad that I got in shape somewhat quickly through forcing myself because I am not patient enough for the other methods. Still, I definitely have to always plan and prepare for races it seems. Some people decide on a whim the night before and I've never understood that! I always have to prepare.

You go!!! That is awesome. Comes spring I want to start the couch to 5K program but I don't see a half marathon or even 6 miles in my future! You are my hero. Want to come and be my trainer?

That is so cool! You'll definitely have to post and let us know how that goes. You'd be surprised, I started off so slow and swore I'd never even do a race. And then I got into 5Ks, then decided to go for a 10K. And I'm even considering a marathon! I'd love to be your trainer. If I can do this, anyone can! I found it just takes patience and that you must keep up the training. Because previously whenever I went running I would feel so sore after that I wouldn't try again for several weeks. And by then I lost any fitness that I gained. But as long as you are training at least once or twice a week I've found that your fitness level will be retained at least, and hopefully improved on.

Yay for the long run. Next week is my second 6 miler ever. The first one felt so good. I've been at a 5 mile block for a while but feel that I'm finally pushing past it. I always feel like I "have to stop" but I know I can push through that and when I do....MAN IT FEELS GOOD!!! Such a sense of accomplishment. I need to push through more often lol. This week for my 5 miler I did 3.5 on the treadmill. I got so sweaty and uncomfortably hot that I just took it outside for the last 1.5 miles. It felt so wonderful after being so hot on the treadmill. The brisk air on my bare arms. I'm sure I looked out of place in the 45 degree weather lol...plus the fact that I had on a lavender tank top with orange shorts didn't help my image hehe.

That is awesome! Yeah, for awhile I was at that 5 mile block too. Anything past that just seemed too far. I am scared about going up to 10 miles eventually for this half marathon training schedule, but then I figure I'll do some of my long runs with the group now that a few people are doing long runs less than 20 miles. I was running in about 48 to 50 degree weather in shorts and a tank top. I think I'll finally bust out my cool weather gear when it gets to 40 degrees. I did finally buy a short sleeve running shirt. I gotta say, I saw the race photo you posted and yours looks way better than mine! The photo of me running looks like I am going to puke! So needless to say, after my first 5K, taking photos of me was forbidden until after the race! But I might allow my family to take some photos at the 10K and if any look like I'm not about to puke, then I'll post one too! I am just not photogenic while running.
