i used to LOVE TLC channel but now its like every night its either about dwarfs/little people, babies, or insanely huge family's with a dozen kids or more. its like one episode per show plays almost nightly it feels! i thought it was bad when they were obsessed during the day with "a baby's story" or "adoption stories" to where there was nothing i wanted to see during the day but now its rare i can find anything at night too! the only show i do like are "the little couple" since jon and kate + 8 just drove me nuts (before and after their split) and the duggars annoy me etc..
will TLC ever get over their obsession with dwarfs, babies, and bus load size families? i thought it was just a trend but its been years now and it just is getting worse!! sigh.. anyone else miss the old TLC? the one that used to at least have more than a few shows on all the time and more documentaries with a wider range?? or am i the only one noticing this??
and no i dont have a problem with dwarf's or kids etc but ugh i just would like to see some variety and less reality tv series and more just documentary shows that yeah are reality but dont continue and follow the people to make it a series..

ha ha ha ha... the channel is suppose to be like Discovery Channel? Where you get loads of documentaries to learn about new stuff?
Hmm...if the channel starts to show only shows that relate to certain families only, then it would have been a wasted resource.
The funny thing is, there are still people watching these so called "reality" shows!

its suppose to be an educational channel with documentaries but they have changed into all reality shows about dwarf families or families with a ton of kids (19 kids in one family with another one on the way) and pregnancy shows.. its like you dont learn anything and all your doing is seeing people live their lives and its just annoying.. i mean if they did 1 or 2 episodes on the families then that would be ok but we are talking YEARS of the same family.. its like WHO CARES?!!?!?!? i wanna learn something again!

Wow, you noticed this too!
I know how you feel. Now, I have met Amy Roloff of "Little People, Big World" and she is cool. I like that show.
As for "Jon and Kate Plus 8" and that show that just makes me question human sanity "19 Kids and Counting", I cannot stand these shows, and I think that it is just ridiculous.
Women, for the love of all that is right in this world, you are not breeding machines! You are so much more than that. You do not have to have large families and you do not have to have more children than you can handle. Having two children is okay! I want children as well, but my limit is two. Seriously, I do not want so many children that I cannot handle them all. Also, I would be afraid of my children hating me for never giving them the attention that they need if I had that many children.
I think that TLC is milking the big family thing. Nothing wrong with having children, but I think that TLC takes it a little too far. It is supposed to be "The Learning Channel", not "The Let's Have Extremely Big Families Flood Our Network" channel.

I get what you are saying, but I do want to point out that they do have a large, but normal family with Table for 12,,,,,and they do have a couple of wedding shows that I love, Say Yes To The Dress is my favorite because as a girly girl, I just LOVE wedding dresses...and they have Happily Ever Faster, which is new, but is about planning weddings quickly in Vegas.

i forgot about their wedding themed shows.. but even then how many different kind of shows do you really need on each topic?? its like they get an idea and make 6 shows for it then find another idea and do the same

oh me to. whats the LEARNING of all that? it just teaches us not to have a whole slew of kids, then break up
i learned that years ago. and once you've found out how hard it is to live as a dwarf, all the struggles, and how they were born that way the novelty wears off. i think if people just stopped watching any of it they'd have to come up with some interesting material. what gets me is if you miss something you really wanted to see on one of these type of channels, they never have it on again

I've noticed this too, and I posted on here recently about A&E, all being sensationalized crime shows now. What about the good old biographies, and American Justice, and shows like that? And Discovery is becoming "world's worst disasters" network, and stuff like that. What's going to happen to the History channel? These channels are not what they used to be, and that bugs me.

yeah your right a & e is all drama shows and not much docs anymore.. its getting nuts.. its like if you dont have the 10 other channels with the history and discovery channels on expanded cable you will never see anything good on and even then its almost impossible

Theres lots of those shows on TLC. All ones I've never been terribly interested in. I just dont understand peoples fascination with some of the shows - like jon and kate plus 8. To me its like the parents are....well exposing their kids...their family to a life in a goldfish bowl. They really dont even have a chance of being normal.
Theres also one called a table for 12 - a set of parents that had several sets of multiple babies.
And like 4 wedding shows...a beauty pagent show or two...lots of make over shows- be it people or homes.
the ones about families and kids - always feel like they are explpoiting the kids.

makes you wonder in a few years if there will be a bunch of messed up kids in the news because they grew up in the limelight and once its gone they try to get attention and it ends badly.. or them just going nuts

Reality Tv is easy and I think that Hollywood and the networks have gotten lazy. All TLC is doing is finding unusual people or families and creating a reality show about them. I wish the reality trend would slow down too since it seems like comedy wed is the only good sit com night left now. The learning channel needs to diversify alot more!

I can tell that you weren't born with any physical handicaps. I, however was. And first let me tell you that they don't think of themselves as freaks, simply unique. Being born disabled does not make one a freak.
To me, people can make themself a freak as the duggars have by having so many children and taking excellent care of none of them. They live off their children and that's wrong to me. Or the person who has tatooed his face to be a lion and had his teeth made into fangs, and whiskers that screw into his face. That is a freak to me since they chose that for whatever reason.
People are people and will stare at the unusual and joke or point or laugh but Jen and Bill have never known anything different. It is what it is. By having them on TLC, people are being exposed to a unique life perspective that may make them not stare or laugh when they do encounter someone who is little person or has another physical disability. It makes it more normal in a way.
I think it's far worse for someone who was born normal but has a terrible accident such as Christopher Reeve had. For him it was truly a life altering event. On one hand, I think TLC is helping normalize what is unique and special about all kinds of people. And yes there is an element of the bizarre to it since folks wouldn't likely watch a program if there wasn't that element.
Life for Jen and Bill might seem tough or odd to you and others but for them it's just like breathing. To cook, they need a stool. Just like you'd think about getting out a spoon to stir the aauce, they get a stool to do the same. I think that the more people see folks in wheelchairs or missing a limb or a little person or whatever, they will be less surprised or shocked when they see it in real life. And hopefully behave better than many do.
On the flip side of things, Jen and Bill are custom building their house and they would have likely done it anyway but it might have been years later so the money has made things better for them.
Also people who get to see a little person or one with a handicap work a job or career and stand on their own two feet financially and garner respect, it changes how people view the disabled. Case in point. Me.
I have worked in hospitals as a surgical tech and had some folks refuse to let me suture them and the Chief of Staff told them, it's your choice but she's the best we have, so you can go to another hospital. His calm no nonsense attitude and complete faith in me changed many a mind and in the future they are more likely to think of disabled people as capable and admirable.
And many of those same folks who at first refused to let me work on them or their child have come back to me, apologized with genuineness and thanked me for the care and attention that I gave their wounds and suturing to minimize scarring and maximize movement. There is an art to suturing that goes far beyond closing the wound and protecting against infection. I gave them that. A normal med tech would not have, just done it as quickly as possible and be done with it. Instead I coached them on not only the wound care but how to really care for the injury that is beneath the skin. Taught them how the muscles move etc so that they won't rip the sutures and yet will get the best looking scar possible.
Having had multiple surgeries and battle scars as I like to think of them to show for it, I have a different perspective. I was in the same medical school group that dissected and sutured real human cadavers but I paid more attention because I wanted to minimize the scars and normalize the joint, skin or limb movements.
It amazes me that so many normal people try to scam the disability system and feel no shame and none of their friends or family seems to think ill of them for it. Well, maybe after seeing someone like Jen who is so tiny help save a baby's life and make a dream come true for another young couple, their family will start to think differently.
They will see them as selfish, lazy and contributing nothing to society. Because not only are they lazy and a burden on society but they make it harder for those that need the benefits legitimately to get them. More than you expected I imagine. But I thought you might think differently if you read the above. And by the way, if I had a chance to be born normal or as I am, I'd choose to be as I am since I get to see a person's true soul when I meet them. Few normal people get that gift. Be well!
