Do you avoid Black Friday shopping because of the potential for harm?

My son works at WalMart and told me that they are temporarily "promoting" many employees to security work on Friday, because of the horrible accidents and incidents that have happened in past years on Black Friday. One year, an employee was trampled to death right after opening the doors. No one came to his aid, either. They just stepped right over him... or on him!
Luckily, my son's store is open 24 hours, so there will be no massive rush in the door at 5 a.m. or whenever the Black Friday sales begin. What he has to do is make sure that no one starts tearing the pallets of sale items apart before they go on sale and make sure that no one is causing harm to others.
I can't understand the greed. Sure, there are some great bargains on Black Friday but, are they worth it? Would you be willing to risk your very life to get a good deal on a toaster? Not me!
I went out one morning on Black Friday. I believe I arrived in the store's parking lot an hour before the store opened. There was already a line of people that went around the store! I looked at them and said, "No way!!!" and went home. I've never even tried to venture out for these sales.
Some online stores have great Black Friday deals and that's where you'll find me, maybe. I don't get that excited about the sales. There will be other sales, other deals and money-saving offers and that's when you'll find me shopping. Not on Black Friday!
So, do you avoid shopping the day after Thanksgiving? Is your reason the same as mine? Or, do you still think the sales are worth the risk?

Last year I went out on Black Friday just to see what it was like, cos I'd never done it. OMG!! Never again!
Did you know that about 65% of people shopping that day are shopping for themselves? I heard that just the other day. Maybe that's why they are so aggressive.
Besides, shopping isn't what makes the season for me and it has nothing to do with my celebrations. It's a birthday, for cryin' out loud, not a shopping extravaganza! I guess people have forgotten that. Anyway, I won't be out on Friday and will do very little shopping anywhere this year.
I hope your son has a safe day with very little stress.

That is the same reason I went out one year. Once I saw the line waiting at the door, I went home and back to sleep. There's no way I'd ever want to deal with those nuts!
I didn't know the percentage but I knew that most people do go to those sales for themselves. My youngest son wants a flat-screen TV, nothing big, and one is on sale Friday, the size he wants. Well, you won't find ME in the store trying to buy it! I know that they have a limited number of these sales items and usually many more people trying to get one. My son said that one thing they have for this sale, they have 50 of and they've been told to close the line after the 50th person so there will be no shoving or fighting. They seem to have it planned well; let's see if it goes as smoothly.
I hear ya about what Christmas has become! I would be just as happy having my family together for the day and enjoying our time together without any gift-giving. So many people forget the real meaning behind Christmas and get so aggressive in the stores. I try to get my shopping done early so I won't have to deal with those greedy mobs. I HOPE I'm able to this year, although I normally have my shopping done before Black Friday. This year, because of those lazy people at Social Security, I'm STILL waiting to get what they approved back in August. Unbelievable!
I'm like you, though. I don't buy much. I make a lot of things like cookies, cakes and breads and give them as gifts. I also like to make other gifts. I found a stuffed penguin holding a rolled up throw at Goodwill. I'm planning on removing the throw and putting a potted spruce tree (small, about a foot tall) in it's place, decorating the spruce with mini-ornaments and giving that to my friend who always shares Christmas with me. That's the kind of stuff I like doing. I already have the spruce and the penguin cost me $3.00. I also have mini-ornaments so this personalized gift will cost $3.00 and I know she'll love it. Also, after Christmas, she'll have a new tree to plant.
I think my son will do fine. Luckily, he'll only be working for 2 hours after the sales begin tomorrow morning. He works until 7:00 a.m. He's only supposed to use a walkie-talkie if there is trouble. He calls the office, they call extra security to the area and, if necessary, call the police. Actually, he said he thinks he's going to be bored stiff. He's been told to stand in one area and keep his eye out for trouble. Standing in one spot for 2 hours is, well, I couldn't do it! I'd probably fall asleep standing up. LOL
I hope your Thanksgiving is a great one!

Wow, this sounds scary. I have only heard of stampedes in religious places and political gatherings. People rushing to stores is new to me.

It is scary, believe me. It shows the true nature of some people and that is pure greed. I don't think it's as much about saving a few dollars as it is about getting something cheap. I honestly think that some of the people who are determined to get to these sales don't even need the things they buy, they just want the bargain.
I can't see how anyone could hold their head up when they can so easily push others aside, even harming some, in order to save some money, especially since Black Friday is the first official Christmas shopping day here in the US. They put more importance on material things than they do on their fellow human beings.
It is disgusting and makes me sick. Christmas is not supposed to be about material things, yet so many people seem to think that way.

I avoid Black Friday because I don't relish getting trampled. I have no desire to get in a mob of people, getting shoved around trying to find a deal on something that might save me a buck or two. And then when I find something I like, it would probably be sold out. I'll steer clear of the maniacs on Black Friday, thanks. : )

I'm definitely passing on Black Friday this year. I don't think it's worth all that hassle. I've gone the past two years and that's enough for me. I hate having to wake up really early in the morning, go to whatever store and wait outside in the cold for what seems like hours, fight my way through crowds when I do get in the store and come back out empty handed. I just don't like the atmosphere. It's so loud and stuffy. I think I can do without it. I usually never find anything I want anyways so I'm going to save myself the trouble and sleep in this year.

I avoid the malls and stores on Black Friday not because I'm scared of getting potentially hurt, but because I just don't want to have to deal with the mess and irritation that comes with "black friday". Ugh! I don't like going into malls where it's so crowded you can barely walk, where there are crying & screaming children, and check-out lines a mile long. I personally don't find that it's worth it. As you said, there are plenty of Black Friday deals going on online - why not shop in the safety and comfort of your own home? I mean there also is certainly a SAFETY hazard in shopping (remember on the news last year? A couple of people in my city, at least, were seriously injured due to being TRAMPLED. People get CRAZY! I'm tellin' ya.) I will definitely avoid the Black Friday craze if I can help it!

I really don't understand why people get so hyper over all of the "bargains" that appear during this day of the year. So you can get a saw that you probably will never use at half off... big deal... WAKE UP AMERICA!! I have never ventured out of my apartment during that day, for fear of being malled for trying to buy some groceries. Some people are just so ignorant .

I don't like crowds at the BEST of times. I don't WILLING go shopping after Thanksgiving - and not just on Black Friday - but this year the roomie's pay day is that Friday, so we'll probably have to get out into the crowds at some point during the weekend - at least for cat food

My dear girl....I do not know where you dear Americans...get the energy after a "wound" up week~~~~the cooking, the company...to then go out and shop til you drop! I cannot stand shopping at the best of times...but to interrupt hours and hours of my day....to save on the latest toaster, cell phone or TV..is just NOT on my radar screen! We only have one of those days in Canada...and it is Boxing Day..I went once, normal hours only to pick up Christmas acutrements...Cards/wrapping paper/ decors at 1/2 price. No, I hate crowds..!!

Hi pergy! I do my acutrement shopping right after Christmas. Most things end up being 75% off so I stock up for the next year. Then, right before Christmas, when I'm wrapping gifts, I'm always so thankful that I did it! Not only is there less to fight the crowds over but it's less I have to think about when Christmas season rolls around again.
I hate crowds, too. During the holidays, most people seem to be irritable and in a big hurry and don't seem to care how they treat other humans. I don't want to deal with that stress. I try to keep the holiday season as stress-free as possible. I usually have everything planned out, which day to do specific things, start decorating 3 to 4 weeks before Christmas and start baking in the last two weeks, starting with cookies, then breads, then cakes, with the actual meal begun the day before. Christmas is NOT a time for stress! Well, it shouldn't be.
I can't understand why so many people go to these insane sales and do things at the last minute which always causes stress, year after year. One year, wrapping gifts at 3 a.m. Christmas morning taught me to never do that again. LOL

Sort of, but more because I do not want to deal with such idiots fighting over this or that just to get in on that one special sale!! HELL NO!! It's times like this when people step out of their normal minds and act like jerks and idiots and I don't want ANY part of it. No way in hell would I go shopping on black friday!! No way!!

Hi Marti,
Do you get my email alerts? I finally started a discussion but you didn't respond. Just sayin...
Black Friday is a day that I have avoided all my life. Most of the time I was working. But I could never understand the need people had to be a part of that madness. I pray that your Son stays safe. Like you said, since the store is open 24 hrs. then there should be no rush. I'l keep him in my prayers and thoughts.
Hugs Leenie

We don’t have sales specifically on Black Friday in Australia and we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but of course we do have sales, big ones like Boxing Day and the mid year Toy Sale to name just a few. People do wait outside for the doors to open and when they do, it’s every man for himself. I have been to the big sales twice in my life, the first was the toy sale because I wanted to pick up an expensive doll for my daughter which was selling at half price and yes I waited for the store and then ran…I had no choice or I would have been trampled! I grabbed a doll and I swear the shelves were empty within ten minutes! I lined up for what seemed like ages and although I did get a bargain I vowed I would not do that again!
I went to the Boxing Day sale one year because I was given money for Christmas; it took me almost an hour to find a parking spot and there were people absolutely everywhere. Again I got great bargains but came home stressed and exhausted.
These days I only shop on week days and avoid weekends, late night shopping and will think very carefully before attending another sale!

I have seen some those accidents your talking about being reported on the news the past few years. They are terrible and ridiculous. I could not imagine any material thing being worth the craziness I have seen on the news. I do avoid shopping at Walmart on black friday because of the crazy crowd but have still braved places like Sears. I don't know if I will be up to it this year or not. It will probably be worse this year with the economy being as it has been. Tell your son that he should think of his saftey first and to be careful.
