Is your cat a lapping cat?   

My cat doesn't really like to sit on my lap. She is a Mainecoon cat and they are not known for being lap cats. She does like to be petted when she comes up to me, and she may sit with me for a little while, but never more than ten minutes or so. She does have a habit of putting her paws on me and making little stepping motions, like she is massaging me- I read that cats do that when they are with their mother and are drinking milk, so when they do it with a human, it is a deep sign of affection and contentment. But she does not sit on my lap for long, although I wish she would.

I do not know why your cat likes to cuddle when its cold, but I would be happy that she does. It's nice to have a cat sit on your lap.

Cats are creatures that love comfort. I have four lap cats! The worst of them is Khuay (the guy in my avatar). He would sleep on my lap for hours if I sat still that long. In fact tonight he was stretched out on my lap and down my legs, laying on his back with a big smile on his face. They hate cold and will suck up warmth anywhere they can get it. Of course I also love it because they are great lap warmers in themselves. I have a heated water bed and the four of them spend hours sleeping on it...and I have them surrounding me at night when I crawl in bed to get some sleep.

They won't do laps in warm and hot weather because of the fact that they don't sweat. There is no way for them to disperse the excess heat so they won't look for the warmer spots to sleep. You'll find that when they are over heated they will be in a nice cool spot on the floor, ground, cement, or damp areas that are semi dry. My older lady, Murphy, rips her fur between her hind legs out during the summer so that she will be cooler. They also will drink more to keep themselves cooler. I have a swamp cooler and it doesn't fail when the temperature hits the 90's that I will find the cats flaked out under the cooler enjoying the breeze and cool air.

Most cats like to be around places where it is warm such like heaters or humans, since some of our heat goes out and the cats can feel it. Especially in the winter they prefeer it more often, you should almost not believe that cats are warmblooded animals.

My cat is quite common in the couch laying next to my mum or on her lap.

By all means no, not all cats are like that.
My cat will jump off, he hates being handled but loves being petted.
But my other cats prior would stay in your lap for a while
I think it alwso depends how they were raised.

No, not all cats are like that. My senior cat hates it. She is by no means a lap cat, but she loves to be petted. The youngest cat, though, he will sometimes lay on my lap, but it's not as often as when he was a baby, unfortunately :( He is more interested in playing and running to keep himself warm. I know they have fur and you would think that kept them warm, I always thought it did, but I've noticed lately, the younger cat is trying to go under blankets to keep himself warm. It's so funny, but it's curious.
