Does anyone walk to work?

I am just thinking about how I have to walk to work in a few hours. I have to start at 6pm and that is around the time it gets dark. I live in a not-so-good area to be walking at night. I always get worried and stressed and it is a pretty decent walk. Does anyone here walk to work? Do you get worried about someone hurting you or worse, what kind of precautions do you take to avoid a bad situation?

I sometimes walk to work. But for you to walk at night with not a very good neighborhood to walk too. Why not ride a taxi, it will be safer I think. Why not just do it in the morning when evryone is still sleeping and those who drink is too drunk to even harm you.

Well, I work nights and cannot really change my schedule so I am stuck there. And I never see cabs around here and if there are, they are way to expensive because my job is about a 30 min. walk or so, but only like 10-15 min. drive, so I cant really see the point of a cab. The bus is way to expensive and getting more expensive each year. My mom usually takes me everyday, that is why I dont worry too much. But on this particular day, she couldnt, so that is why I posted this. Thanks for the response and the concern :)

i walk to work, in the arvo's but it's only 1 km up the track and board daylight, i don't blame you for feeling these thing either, do you carry something like pepper spray, or take self defence classes. i'd be a wous and take the car, or other transport.

Here's a good idea, too: they have these mini-pepper sprays they sell on eBay (and elsewhere), that are "disguised" as lipstick..and work for about 5 sprays. They're $9. I've had my 2 for about.. 5 years without having to use them. And the best thing? They're unnoticable in your purse, and definitely portable. Look up "lip stick pepper spray" on eBay's search and see what I'm talking about!

I guess you could say we walk to work, we live and work on a ranch and walk almost everywhere we need to go. It's not scary in the light but at night it is very dark here and we have bears, cougars and many other critters around but the scariest things are the stray humans that show up sometimes, we are not far from a major highway.

Prepare yourself at all times. Everything can happen on te road anytime. It you would not mind, can't you drive? If not why not get a bicycle which is way too better than walking. Like my co-worker, biking is his transport. Just my 2 cent

I can drive and have my license but I cannot afford a car right now. We did have a bicycle but it was stolen on thanksgiving [otherwise I would not have posting this and would have biked to work] But I walked to work and everything was fine and I made it home safely [thanks mom] Thanks for the response!

I've only had one job in my entire life that was close enough to walk to. It was when I was in college and I worked a part time job on campus in the evenings. I went to a small college so the safety issue really wasn't something that crossed my mind most of the time as I knew that I would be safe. If I were to be walking after dark in a questionable area, I would make sure that I carried some pepper spray with me and I'd also make sure that I had something that was fairly heavy somewhere on my body as well. Additionally, if you've never done so, perhaps you should take a self defense course.

I don't walk all the way to work - that would take several hours - but I do walk to the train station. I live in a fairly nice area and pass a police station on my way, so I'm not too worried about crime... Having said that, I do have to trek down a very dark and dingy path, where (I suppose) anyone might lurk. The worst experience I've had down that path is slipping on very icy patches which I can't see!

The area I walk in sometimes is very populated with all sorts of people. They are always outside having bar b q's and kids playing. When I get more used to seeing faces I might feel better. And I like when they are a lot of people outside because I know if anything WAS to happen, that SOMEONE would help me.

I could never walk to work..Unless I left about 2 hours in advance (I work about 10 miles away! Definitely not in walking distance) but I really really empathize with you about living in an unsafe neighborhood (or working in one, for that matter.) Before I could drive, I had to walk EVERYWHERE. And in a city of about 400,000 people.. With sky-rocketing crime rates..That can be a pretty scary thing. The best thing you can do is get rides (or take the bus) whenever possible, and be prepared with a cell phone, possibly some pepper spray/mace and a general knowledge of self defense never hurt anyone. Another good idea is to be ultra-aware of your surroundings; and by this I mean: don't listen to your radio or iPod while walking! I think criminals and burglars and gangsters love to catch people off guard. And tuning out the world is great..But not at night, when you have to walk by yourself and sometimes depend on your sense of sound. Another good (obvious) idea is to walk on the main roads if at all possible. If there's a busy, well-lit and populated street (we have some in my neighborhood), you should opt to take that route rather than the dark, scary, back-corner way that might be a little quicker. Better safe than sorry, right?
