Are people of religion generous people?? Sure, some are. There are good people of religion that would give you the shirt off their backs, but not all of them are like this. The story I'm going to tell you is a true story. They are christians.
I know this christian couple who decided not to give their children any gifts for Christmas. Can you guess why? They say people have forgotten what Christmas is about. They tell me Christmas is about Jesus birth. They were going to celebrate that alone and give no gifts to anyone at all.
Those poor kids! Those poor kids!.....No, no,cry the parents. We explained it all to the kids. They understood. Will people of religion be Scrooge this Christmas????
Kids might say they understand but when all their friends are getting gifts, they might reason things out different than you think. Thoughts of not being good enough, or maybe being punished. How about nobody loves me enough to even give me a gift. They can say OK, but deep down, we all know the hurt is there. This is just wrong!!
God wants us to understand the joy of giving, the joy of loving, the joy of being selfless. Shouldn't this be done at least once a year?? Didn't the wise men bring gifts?? Did you hear,WISE MEN??
What did Scrooge teach but what we should never be. Celebrate Jesus but celebrate life, love, and each other. I have found that hate can be masked in so many ways. Let's choose to put our people, love, kindness, and caring above pride and the stern, strict control of others so many would love to have.
Well, I'm off to round up some gifts. I like to give the spiritual ones. You know, the ones that are handmade by me that you can't buy anywhere, the ones that go to the soul and touch you because they carry a little bit of ourselves with them. They are the ones they talk about for years. Few ever remember the store bought ones. It's not too late!! Let them FEEL YOUR UNCONDITIONAL LOVE TODAY!!

I think it's not a good idea to not buy your kids gifts. Sure it's not the most important thing, but gifts bring joy to both giver and receiver. I can't imagine canceling Christmas for my kids just to get them to honor Christmas properly. There, like everything in the universe, must be a balance.
