Keeping a diary/journal in 2010

I've kept a diary fairly regularly for over 25 years but last year I struggled to find one with a full page for each day. So, when I saw one in early October, I bought it ready. About a fortnight ago I thought " Ooooh! must get a diary" & bought one... though, on the way home I had a vague recollection of buying the previous one. Yesterday, I unwrapped presents from my mum.... obviously, there was a diary amongst them. ("I know you couldn't get one last year" she said). Today, I am planning to visit my son to exchange presents..... what do you reckon? Will he have bought me one aswell???

I realise that there are still a lot of people who keep a diary, but I would have expected that paper diaries were pretty much outdated. Since you have a computer it be more convenient to keep a diary on the hard drive or a flash drive. This way you can use as much space as you require for a day and even add photos etcetera if required.

Apparently, your expectation was way off the mark (just go into any book store and look at the huge selection of paper diaries they have in there). I have my online diaries, but unlike paper diaries, the computer uses electricity, and thus is subject to crashing whenever there's a storm or something like that. You call paper diaries "outdated"; I call it smart thinking. Technology is good for some things, but it can't hold a candle when it comes to the more personal touch of paper diaries.

Yes, I can see your point. Many people may still prefer the original system of conventional diaries which offer a personal appeal rather than the easier approach of software equivalents.

I'm not into diary myself. I don't believe I'm lactose intolerant or anything like that, I just prefer to limit my intake as much as possible. I hear it's better for our skin this way too! I do miss Camembert though.

I, myself still keeping a diary, journal or planner whatever you call it.. My journal is like a handy tool for me. Keeping it is as good as preserving your memory, i think. - my journal is the absorber of my happy days; - frustrations - sad experience - obsessions - and its also work as a planner, I can easily write things that needs to be done, and schedules to meet. - I even write the birth dates of all my family member and friends. - i even write recipes on it, (favorite one) - and also a scheduled shopping list.. - and even a shock absorber It's actually a good way of organizing your mind and thoughts..

yes, I agree with you. I have a small pocket diary for future events/appointments etc and the larger one for recording what happened and how I felt.

I do agree that paper diary is more accurate because you don't need to buy any device or media player just to see your diary. Sure a paper diary will end up filling up closet space but it is something that doesn't require electricity to operate. Books don't have to get a conversion when a new software is released. I mean with so many new upgrades it will come to a time where the program the diary was originally written is no longer compatible with the new software. It is good to have one type up to make copies or have it stored in a type of paper that can last for a really time.

You make good points here both in favour of the paper version and the fact that a computerised one can be easily duplicated.

Hi, Wizzywig. My daughter used to keep a journal. She never really bought a diary that had the day or date on the pages. She always got the ones that have lined pages. That way, she could write as much or as little as she wanted and just dated the entries herself. Do YOU think your son will have gotten you a diary? That's usually the way it goes though, right? People know you do a certain thing, or collect a certain thing and, you end up with 4 or 5 of them for Christmas or your birthday.*L* If he does get you one, you should have plenty of space for writing this next year, even if you have to mark through the dates on the pages.

I've just had hard-backed lined notebooks some years or for specific periods of time when I wanted to write more. No, my son didnt buy me one... I didnt mention it till all the gifts were given.

i suspect you'll probably get another one. a journal or diary is something i occasionally think about doing but never actually do. i kept one in my early teens (not a good idea when you have siblings btw) but although i wasn't put off the idea it is just something i never get around to writing now. anyway what are you going to do with all these diaries - redate them a year you don't get a diary, regift them, charity shop or use them for different things?

Probably offer them to anyone who wants one because I'll most likely lose them by next year anyway! I already have a small diary from work where I'll write appointments and reminders anyway.

Hello, Wizzy. Just like a bus isn't it? You wait ages for one, and then two or three diaries come at once! One of my presents this year is a diary, from M & S, with a full page for each day. So I'm really going to make an effort this year to keep it up to date. Who knows, if I become famous one day, I could get offered squillions for my life story, so the diary will come in useful, and it's something to do that doesn't involve the computer. I seem to spend more and more time online these days. I used to keep a diary years ago, but I stopped when my ex husband, who was insanely jealous, took to reading it. It wasn't that there was anything there that shouldn't be there, but it was my private thoughts and comments on the day's events, and it wasn't written for an audience. He couldn't grasp that just because I wanted to keep something private, it didn't mean I was hiding something.

Oh yes, the diary is a very private place to record innermost thoughts. As you say, it doesn't mean there are any sordid secrets (not much chance of that for me )

Hi Wizzywig, oh I think your son might bought you one as well. I actually stopped keeping a diary ever since I had my first notebook and that was two years ago, but then again I'm planning to have a diary for 2010 just for a change. Funny thing, I have this coupon from starbucks for a free planner and I'm about to get it first week of January. They have a promo in the Philippines until January 6, 2010, and all you have to do is buy some coffee and drinks from them. I tell you I don't really drink coffee but, what I get/buy is the cream base drinks like strawberries and creams, vanilla, chocolate and cookies...lol My friends also helped me fill the coupon with all the stickers I needed so it's pretty easy. I like their planner it is quite sophisticated and cool..lolz happy lotting!
