Usually Chinese food is quite bland and not spicy. We in India like our food to be spicy and hot, so we have changed the Chinese food according to our tastes. So when we go to a Chinese restaurant we do not have any problems, because the names are also changed to our Indian version. This is only in the local chinese food joints. If you go to an upmarket Chinese star hotels, there we may need the help of the waiter to order our food.

Chinese food is quite bland and not spicy? in some aspact it's true, but not exactly. the food of Chinese coastal cities is not spicy. but in the southwest part of China, we eat very spicy food. take my hometown Chongqing for example, we eat everything with chilli sauces. i don't know if you have ever heard "hot pot". hot pot is very popular in whole China, and it's very spicy. :) if you come to China someday, you can try it and maybe you'll like it.

With the chinese characters in the menu and probably some with translations, I am a little confuse when eating out in a chinese restaurants. since I am non chinese, some of the foods are alien to me but have no choice but to ask the waiter/waitress for leads on the the type of foods stated in the menu.

I always find that there is an English translation and this makes things nice and easy to read and understand and I never have any problem placing my order as I generally will have the same things I always do and they speak English anyway so it's never a problem.

Hi longsdogin, I've yet to eat Chinese food in China but I've had the real thing and not the Westernised version as had many Chinese friends in the UK. They knew which dim sum to order to be authentic, but I never did try those delicacies of chicken feet or ducks tongue. My favourite had to be scallop 'chung fun' with a hot chilli oil to dip.
