I say I've never travelled but that's not entirely true! The last holiday I had was in Tunisia and it was a nice experience but this was so many years ago that I've forgotton what it's like to travel! I want to start travelling again and here's my problem! I live alone and I want to get out there and do some travelling alone! Have you ever done this? What are your experiences and how do you go about it? I know this sounds a little ridiculous but there you go, we all have to start somewhere and I guess I want to put my best foot forward and go for it. How do you feel about travelling alone? Or, do you think it's a good idea to go on some kind of package holiday with a group of people? Well, I would really be interested in your holiday experiences. Andrew

I travel all the time, I'm quite obsessed :-) I travel alone quite often, but, as I've friends a bit here and there, I usually end up at someones guest bed. Cheaper, and then I can do tourist things during the day and be social in the evening. I've been travelling all on my own though, you get to do exactly what you want which is good. I have been on some riding holidays. I went there on my own and joined up with a group. That was great, you meet lot of people with similar interest so if you're into something like riding, diving, photography etc there should be a holiday out there for you :-) Torunn

Thanks for that! This sounds like a great idea! I'm very interested in cycling and I'm thinking that maybe I can try a cycling holiday or something. I'm will to experiment though, I think that time has arrived. At the moment the only place I'm familiar with is London! I must get out there and do some exploring! Andrew

That sounds like an exciting experience and it's definitely food for thought! I have a lot to learn but I guess I'm going to take things slowly. Thanks again. Andrew

You never run out things to do in London though :-) I really love that city. On the other hand, you can get lot of cheap tickets from there. Or take the train if you want to bring your own bike, the father of a friend of mine goes cycling with some friends every year. They usually go to France or Spain, cycle from village to village and eat and drink all evening. No added weight either with all the cycling during the day!

Hi Andrew. I used to find it enjoyable to travel on my own. I stayed in backpacker hostels and had lovely times chatting to other travelers. Going alone I had the flexibility of doing exactly what I wanted to do, stay in accommodation I could afford and visit all the places I wanted to. When I traveled with my ex-boyfriend he didn't like budget accommodation. He liked to move at a slow pace. He and I almost ran out of money in the Seychelles due to his expensive taste in accommodation. In Istanbul in Turkey he made us stay in a luxury hotel. I am an independent traveler and I like exploring many different places on one trip. These days I travel with my children. We stay in guest houses and travel on local transport: trains, buses and ferries. I think traveling alone is the best option or with a traveling companion. I don't think it would be all that nice to travel in a large group.

Hello maximax, I have come to know you as the seasoned traveller now and that's great! Thanks for your thoughts on this. It sounds like you have been having lots of exciting travel experiences. I too would love to start getting out there but I figure I'm going to start small and get used to the idea of regular travel. I have to change my thinking and accept that there's nothing wrong with travelling solo! I'm really looking foward to making a start. I think I will first start researching cheap flights online and things like that. Andrew

I have to travel to Europe every year alone. I think it has some advantage. You can be where and when you want to be. With group of people you have to deal with other people moods and problems. In the other hand short term traveling with groups is fun. I did most of my traveling alone and I am very happy about my experience. You can meet new people and create spontaneous schedule.

Yes, I like the sound of that! From everyone's response on this it seems that I have been missing out on a lot of good experiences! Still, there's time to rectify the situation and now is that time I guess! I like the idea of being left to my own devices. Andrew

That are companies that specialise in holidays for single people or people who simply want to travel alone. You can either join other groups or have arrangements made to go it alone as such!! Travelling alone means you have nobody else to think about and can do as you please whihc can be very liberating as you can do things spur of the moment too!

Hi, yes I definitely like the sound of that and I'm going to have to do some serious research online. I like the sound of handling the holiday my way! I remember the experience I had in Tunisia and that was a great holiday! I went to this evening feast and there were these belly dancers, snake charmers, it was just a terrific experience. Anyway, I would like to do some more travelling and travelling alone sounds like the best option. I may try a group holiday once to see if it suits me. Andrew

When I was younger I loved traveling alone. It seemed all I ever did was travel alone. I was a hippie and my favorite way to travel was with a 60 lb backpack and maybe $200 in my pocket. As far as I was concerned that was the ONLY way to travel! LOL! Also, I hitchhiked a lot then too. Back then, in the late 70's to early 80's it was relatively safer to hitchike, but, I never hitchhiked alone. I loved going into a city that I've never been before and learning all by myself how to get around. I was really gutsy in those days. Now I'm an old lady that's falling apart at the seams (yea, right!) and I much prefer to stay closer to home. Good luck in your travels! Don't worry about it. You will find your own style soon enough and will be tearing up the countryside with your presence! LOL! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

That's something I have heard a lot about, backpacking although I have never tried anything like that. I'm not sure I would go down the hitchhiking route though! I don't think you are ever too old to travel and I guess I'm going to refer to myself as a late starter! I'm excited about the whole thing and I want to start doing something real soon! Andrew
