I'm catching cold |

| Don't you just hate it, you know you are catching cold you do all the right things to fight it, but still are sore and snotty. I am staying away from everyone until I beat this thing, usually I can stop it but each time I get this way I just know I'm not going to stop it. What do you do to stop a cold? Chicken soup? | | | | | |

| | Hello, Savypat, and commiserations. I usually take large doses of vitamin c - 1000mg effervescent tablets, which dissolve in water and are pleasant to drink. And a hot toddy - whisky, boiling water, sugar and lemon juice. For a cough or sore throat, I make honey, lemon, blackcurrant (Ribena) and hot water. Just as effective as cough medicine and lozenges, and much cheaper. | | | | | | |

| | Hi savypat. I know what you mean, as I am just on the other side. I think I finally kicked my cold today, I think. Last week was bad as I knew I was going to have it, and I couldn't do anything about it. For me, it always start with sore throat and a little bit of fever. I usually hold out and don't take any medicines, but drink lots of liquids. Yesterday I gave up and took some, as I noticed that it has turned into coughs. I think the drugs worked, as I seem to be fine at the moment. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, believe it or not chicken soup is very good for a cold, also vitamin C and if you have a store that carries many vitamins "zink" can make the life of a cold much shorter, stay warm & lots of liquid's, tea, OJ, other juice's. But not milk, milk will give you mucus. Asprin for the ach's, Feel better! | | | | | | |

| | Oh dear, new screenname, snottypat... (Dawn runs for it) I don't get sick that often (knock on wood). I think my immune system is on overdrive. Funny you should mention chicken soup though. There was this running argument between my parents for years about chicken soup. Dad always wanted it when was sick, and mom, who was a nurse, kept telling him that any fluids would do. So when somebody published an article showing evidence that chicken soup did indeed have benefits when you have a cold, dad was oh so gleefully waving it in mom's face. But I think mainly you just need rest and fluids and warmth and just to ride it out. | | | | | | |

| | I'm just getting over a bad cold that I couldn't stop, either. I think I managed to shorten the worst of it, though. I took extra Vitamin C and Vitamin D, as well as drank echinacea tea and ate fresh vegetables and fruit. I also drank lots of water and rested whenever I felt tired... which, for two days was all the time! I spent lots of time in bed napping or trying to read. Keep warm, use mentholatum to keep congestion fluid and don't use OTC cold medicines unless it's absolutely necessary because they make congestion thicker and harder to get rid of. If you have a fever, let it run its course, too, unless it's dangerously high. A fever is your body's way of fighting off an infection. Mine started in earnest last Friday and today I'm feeling fine. Sure did ruin a weekend, though! | | | | | | |

| | What I do when I start feeling sick is take extra vitamin C, drink plenty of juices, hot tea and take a couple of Aleves. I also love a good hot cop of chicken soup. My mom swears by echinacea, which is a herb that helps in treating colds and the flu. It comes in a liquid which really taste disgusting but it does help. They also have Echinacea tea that helps alot. I hope you feel better real soon. | | | | | | |

| | I actually woke up this morning not feeling so well. The little girl that I care for has been sick all week, so I'm not too surprised I woke up sick. I was doing really well with washing my hands after wiping her nose or after every time she sneezed, but I guess it still caught up with me! When I woke up not feeling well I decided to make an orange smoothie. I just threw a few oranges, ice cubes, water, and a packet of orange Emergen-C in my blender and hit blend. It was DELICIOUS. Tasted like orange juice but wasn't loaded with sugar. Plus the Emergen C packet gave me TONS of Vitamin C. I am also sure to take my vitamins each day - that helps keep me healthy too! If I don't feel better in a couple of days I'll probably try to find a medicine that fits my symptoms, hopefully my other actions will take care of it first though! Chicken soup is a good idea - I just may have some of that for dinner. :-) FEEL BETTER! | | | | | | |

| | A lot of Vit C is very helpful, hot soup will help as well. The best from all is to stay in your bed till you are OK. It takes 3 day if you stay in bed and 7 days if you don't. | | | | | | |
