Opening Doors! Do You Open Your Door Without Knowing Who It Is??  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people 3 years ago

When someone knocks on your door, or rings your bell, if you don't have a peep hole or a window to see out of the door, do you open your door without asking who it is? Is that too much trust or perhaps dangerous to your safety? What are your thoughts?

No,I say oh is it,or I will look through my window to see who it is.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi there Coolbeans210, Welcome to one of the cool sites around, enjoy. Well that's a good thing I would think, especially in these days and times. Even if I am expecting a delivery, I make sure I look through the glass to see if it is the delivery person. Sometimes I feel bad, because the Jehovah Witness people come to the door, and I look out and see them and I will not open the door. I feel guilty. Thanks for your response, take care.

I do. I trust the people and because im living in a village there is no criminality. I think im very save so im not scared for people who rings the bell.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi olthorpe, Welcome to the ranch, it's a great place to have fun and meet nice people. It sounds as if you live in a very nice neighborhood, where people know each other and they are like family. That is great. When we lived in the south, my grandparents would leave their front door open. We never worried about intruders.
You cannot do that everywhere. It's good that you feel safe, that is important to you peace of mind. Thanks for your reply, take it easy.

I just open it, people in my city are just plain nice. I've never had anyone really bad come show up at my door. I also do trust most people before I know them, and after I get to know them if they have a bad personality or motives I just stay away and when they're nice(which most of them are) I just become friends with them. :)

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi there davidshin, Hope that you are enjoying your time at the ranch, it's a great site. It is a very good feeling to know that you don't have to worry about people of ill repute showing up at your door. You sound as if you are a good judge of character and use good judgement when you find out that a person is not someone you want to be friends with. What you have said makes me think that you are also a person who one can trust. Thanks for your reply, take it easy.

I'm afraid that I do, at least during the day. At night, I always look through the peephole as it kind've freaks me out when I'm not expecting anyone. I don't really like people to knock on my door if I'm not expecting it. I keep trying to break myself of opening the door but I still slip up most of the time. I don't think my daytime actions are safe. We do have a security guard in my building so those who knock are usually people from this apartment.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi Clicker625, Well at least you have a buffer in the security guard. I am not trying to scare you or anything, but maybe one of those chains which allow you to open the door without actually opening it all the way would be a good idea. Because it sounds as if you live alone, and that would be added protection for you
and it would allow you to see, even if you forget to look through the peephole.
Just a suggestion. Take care, thanks for your response.

I will not do so if I'm not sure who is at the door. It's not only due to insecurity from strangers, but also to the annoyance from pushy salesmen. In our neighborhood we are equiped with remote telephones on the door. In this way,we can ask people who he is through the phone, then descide whether to let them in.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi snouzhou, That is great, that way if you don't know them or don't want them to come in, than they stay outside. I used to live in an apartment building like that. They would buzz and you could ask who it was and buzz them in if you knew it was alright. We also had a peep hole in the door and I believe one of those chain slot locks, that allow you to open the door just a bit, before you fully open it. I felt very safe. The least safe I have felt was in a condo that I owned, where the stairs from outside led right up to the door to the house. It kind of felt vunerable to anyone that wanted to come to the door. Nothing ever happened while I lived there and there were close neighboors as well. It was a four-plex condominum.
Thanks for your response, take care.

In this area there have been a few home invasions where someone goes to a home, rings or knocks, and then assaults the householders. So always wise to handle unknown visitors with extreme caution. Unfortunately these are the times we live in. Thankfully, my outside door has some glass portions that enables me to see who is at the door and size up the situation. Still, caution is the word!

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi 1hopefulman, That will keep you on your toes, I would think. You are so right, everytime you turn around almost on the news, somebody has been kidnapped or someone has gone missing from somewhere, And these things are bing done by folks who know these people. What do we expect from strangers who are up to no good? When I was younger and living with my mother someone, probably from the neighborhood, broke into our home, during the daytime. Bold. No one was home thankfully, but knowing me and my sisters, we probably would have crippled them, but glad we didn't have an encounter with them. Thanks for your reply, take it easy.

My entire door is glass framed in wood so it isn't hard to see who is on the other side of it. If it were a solid door, living where we do I would open it without worrying about who was on the other side of it. Most people that come to our house just come on in, if someone is knocking or ringing the bell I either forgot to unlock the door for the day or they are selling something.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi jewels, It sure sounds as if you don't have any qualms about folks coming in your home. That is a lot of trust to have people just walk on in at will, but if everybody knows everybody, then there would not seem to be any cause for concern.
We used to keep our door open when we lived in the south, I think that was the only place where it happened that I can remember. Everybody knew each other and trusted those who came to the door, and it was in the country, where people were very friendly. Thanks and take good care.

I would just ask them who they are first and I will try to decipher from their voice whether I know them or not, or ask them their names and if I know them without opening the door. Or if I am too suspectful, late in the night or I am alone, I would be extra careful. Perhaps I would look for other ways to be sure it's someone not dangerous. Phone somebody, watch how long the dogs would bark, or wait till they speak.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi JDy116, You sound cautious, and that is a very good thing especially in today's world. I don't think you can be too careful, it does not make much sense to be paranoid, but a good dose of caution should work to ones advantage. As Well watching too much television will have you thinking in terms of Law and Order-Special Victims Unit, "o) which is what I do. I don't think it is that bad. Thanks for sharing, take good care.

myLot reputation of 94/100. JDy116 (1718)  3 years ago

Oh no,I didn't realize that I sounded too paranoid. Well doors are open during days when everyone is around. I was rather speaking of an incident that happened in our old house when there was much less security, and it was midnight those people knocking and we didn't have no way to find out who it is. I guess I learned taking cautions that way until now. And I'm not really into watching all those crime shows but yes sometimes local crimes have me just as afraid at times.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi again JDy, No, no I was not saying that you were acting paranoid in any way. Just speaking in general. The police have let us know that there have been break-ins in our neighborhood, so if I don't know who it is or I am not expecting anyone, then I might well not open the door. Strange things go on sometimes. Take care.

Hi artistry,
I don't think it's wise not to check who is knocking at our door before opening it. We never know who it is, it could be somebody with bad intentions. It's better to be extra careful these days. I don't open the door right away, i usually peep on my window to check who is behind my door. If it's night time and i can't see the person outside, i ask first before opening.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi there Gareth, Always nice to hear from you, hope everyone is well. Wanted to tell you, I like the signature flower, but I miss the little one's picture. :o).
You are absolutely correct, you never know, most of the time when someone comes to the door, I am expecting them. Otherwise I peek out, and if I don't know them, I will not open the door. I feel that people should know who it is before opening the door to people, especially strangers and most especially at night. There have been break-in's, I have heard from the police, around my neighborhood, so I am quite cautious. Times are tough and people are looking for things they can steal and sell. Take care. Thanks.

most of the time i dont know who is there on the door. but some time i have and idea who can be there on the door.
i dont have any door eye and have a pentahouse with a gate so i have to move and go out of the door to see who is there on the door. ya i know this is dangerous in some cases but we are social and we cant be much suspisous every time and it could only create problems in our life.

myLot reputation of 93/100. artistry (1857)   ranked 424 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

...Hi 1anurag1, What you say is true, we are a social community of man, but you have to consider, without being too paranoid that everybody does not mean you good. With that said, you can't worry that everybody who shows up at your door is a villian. Do try to maintain a balance of healthy scepticism when it comes to opening your door, without knowing who is on the other side.
There is nothing wrong with asking who it is. Take good care. Thanks for your response.
