Although I work for a big retail company, I work "back of house" as it were, and my office is in a large building on a business park next to the river thames and semi rural. So it was no surprise a couple of days ago, when my work colleague said there was a stray dog hanging about the front of the building. I didnt get to see the dog at all but today, our regular routine was put on the back burner and "operation find the dog" was put into operation. I won't go into all the shenanigans my managers and the warehouse staff had to perform, but eventually they managed to get the dog in my department managers 4x4 and took her off down to the local kennels. Please note, calls to the local council and rspca were ignored. the council said they couldnt do anything until the local dog catcher was notified,( he wasnt taking calls??? or not at work??) RSPCA wouldnt do anything either. so it was left to my 3 female managers and one of the warehouse guys to catch her and take her to the local kennels. The local kennels were aware of her, she had been dumped outside their premises 3DAYS ago, she did try to get back to her owner when he walked away, but he kicked her back (witnessed by someone who was more interested in trying to catch her rather than beating the living daylights out of the thug who dumped her) I spoke to both of my managers afterward, one showed me her black berry mobile with pictures of a beautiful black and white greyhound/lurcher dog with an extremely thin body. my other manager also had pictures and laddered tights and mud all over her expensive black suit. But she was more worried about the little dog. the warehouse guy showed me the video on his phone of them all trying to catch her. He said the little dog was only about 18months/ 2 years old and she cringed quite pitifully when any man approached her, but she was fine with the ladies, which is why she happily put her head on my managers lap and gazed up at her with loving eyes.
Why am i saying all this, and why was the day so amazing? it proved that even though we work for a high powered organisation, time was spared to rescue a frightened sad little dog. and up to the present time, there is at least 4 people willing to offer her a home. If i didnt have a dog already ( who is very anti social and doesnt like other dogs unfortunately) i would have taken her home there and then. Hopefully this will have a happy ending, i will keep you updated.

Oh my what an amazing story, it really is!thumbup You have described (really well) how your colleagues put "operation find the dog" into action and I really do hope she finds a loving home. I think she will, don't you? As for the RSPCA, they have let me down so many times I have lost count! If I ever come to winning lots of cash I'm afraid it won't be them that gets a percentage of it, there are far more deserving causes if you ask me, The Dogs Trust being one of them...and the Cats Protection League (I own a cat) amongst many others too numerous to mention here!rolleyes

the company I work for always supports one big charity each year ( this year its one of the cancer charities) but the year before last, our interdepartment charity was a animal shelter. We were allowed, on a rota basis, to spend time at the charity helping out. Two of my happiest memories is on my turn for dog walking ; squelching round a muddy field with the biggest alsation i have ever seen and one of sweetest natured dogs i have ever met and a little 3 legged terrier who pelted round on his 3 legs dragging me after him!!
thank you for your kind response x

That is a heart-warming story (and one that I'm sure has its counterparts in many businesses, big and small). It's worrying and distressing that the local council (and worse) the local kennels and the RSPCA were apparently not interested.

I hope that 'your' dog will eventually find a good home. Sadly, she may never be able to fully trust men (though it is possible to 'counsel' dogs to a certain extent and she may be able to come to tolerate certain men).

I hope that your company (and the two managers) can show as much compassion - and give up as much time - to help any of its employees who might be in distress.

My dog was abused when I got her off the streets at 6 months. She was afraid of men as well. Now she is 10 and loves everyone. Once the dog gets to trust you and their real personality comes out they will recover. I just showered my dog with love and she responded with the same. If you watch the shows Animal Cops or Dogtown you will see how much these dogs change once they see that not all of us humans are bad people.

thank you Owlwings and snoopyfan for your kind response. I hope our little dog will find a happy home. The way she appeared to be, I think kindness will go a long way with her and hopefully she will learn to trust again.
I had a rescue dog once, well actually most of my pets over the years have been unwanted. Rats, fish, bunnies, dogs and cats of course. even a budgie !! but at the moment I have got 3 cats and a dog. But my rescue dog was terrified of water as he had been hosed down or so it seemed , when he was younger, sadly he didnt live to a ripe old age, but in the time we had him, we cared for him and loved him and as a small example of his trust, he was happy to have a nice warm shower in our shower room when he needed it!!

It is stories like this that make me smile so thanks for sharing! It is a good day when you see people helping out whether it's people or animals. I have a dog, too, so there is a special place in my heart for animals. (My dog is the same as yours - an "only child" and very antisocial when it comes to other dogs.) When you were telling about the poor puppy, I wanted to adopt it too! That's awesome that at least four people would offer the puppy a home. That is so good to hear. What a good day. Also my sister has an older dog who doesn't like men either. She is fine with women, but is very uneasy around men. My sister's dog is a little older and has been abused, but it is so sad that a puppy would be so scared of men at such a young age. There must have been a lot of abuse there. It's a good thing she has such a good home to go to sometime soon! Yes, please do keep us posted! I'd be interested to know what the lucky new owner names her too if you know that as well. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful story with a happy ending sometime soon!

Yes when it happened I was so surprised that I had to share on mylot. I love animals and hate any form of cruelty. Its good to know I work with a lot of likeminded people. A few years back we had 3 horses loose one foggy saturday on the business park. It was saturday and we were worried stiff that the cars cutting through the business park would be involved in some dreadful accidents. we ended up putting the horses in our lorry yard, closing the gates and letting all the lorries park outside in the approach road. People, who were supposed to be working (hahalol) found every excuse to 'just pop downstairs' with polo mints or carrots to see if the horses were ok. Our little dog was a far smaller exercise, but just as important. I will let everyone know the outcome.
Sad to say, my own dog as much as I love him, he doesnt like other dogs at all, but he is fine with cats and small children. I just call him the 'thug from hell'devil, bless him

wow, that's definitely an amazing story. I've always been so very soft hearted when it comes to dogs and I just wish no dogs are homeless or sick right now. Whenever i see an alley dog, i just always hope i could just take them home with me but just couldnt, they're too many. :(

If I could , I would have a houseful of cats and dogs. The 3 cats I have now, belonged to other people who were unable to continue owning them. My little dog was given to me by his owner, when the owners wife died. The owner was moving up the other end of the country but sadly he too died. But as I have said, over the years, the majority of my pets were unwanted or given to me by their owners because they were unable to keep them. But I have actually said to the other people who are interested in owning our little dog, go to the shelter any way if our little girl goes elsewhere and pick another dog out. They all want homes.

What a great story it started sad but there are 4 people who want this dog. She will have a great life. I got my dog off the street and she was abused it took me a whole month just to get her to walk on a leash. She is a Pit Bull mix and at first like your dog she didn't like males. I had her since she was 6 months old. Bandit is now 10 and spoiled rotten. As for the RSPCA they have rules they have to follow. I am not sure if you ever watched Animal Cops on Animal Planet. But they can't take a dog until the owner signs the papers and turns them over. It's not like they don't want to help the dog and they do feel bad when they can't get a dog or cat right away. They don't give up either it's just rules they have to follow. Mostly it's so the case won't be thrown out and the animal abuser will get a fine or jail time. Can't wait for the update. And thanks for saving this dog's life. You all did a great job.

Yes i have watched the programme you mentioned and yes the rules have to be followed. When the little dog first started hanging around the building, I thought she was just separated from her owner. We have a lot of dog walkers walking through the business park and there is a small housing estate nearby. I love the sound of your Bandit and I will keep you updated.

This was a very heart warming story. And well written and interesting. I usually don't read everything on some post but this keep me very interesting. It was a good thing what your managers did. Hopefully the dog will find a good home and loving owners who will care for it and won't abuse it.
