Beneficial effect of Christianity | | | | Often, atheists and others raise the accusation that Christianity has a negative effect on society but this is by no means true and a clear counter-factual can be found in the Welsh revival of the early 20th century In the early 20th century Wales experienced a revival so strong that public houses were almost empty. Men and women who used to waste their money getting drunk were saving it, giving it to help their churches, buying clothes and food for their families. And not only drunkenness, but stealing and other offences grew less and less, so that often a magistrate came to court, and found there were no cases for him. Church services were held in packed churches lasting well into the night. Men whose language had been filthy before, learnt to talk purely. It is related that not only did the colliers put in a better day's work, but also that the pit ponies were so used to being cursed and sworn at, that they just couldn't understand orders being given in kind, clean words, so that the pit owners were forced to buy new ponies! Yet, still the work output increased. The dark tunnels underground in the mines echoed with the sounds of prayer and hymns, instead of oaths and nasty jokes and gossip. People who had been careless about paying their bills, or paying back money they had borrowed, paid up all they owed. People who had fallen out became friends again. It started when on February 14th, in New Quay, Cardiganshire, young Florrie Evans stood to her feet and publicly confessed "I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart" a mighty move of the Spirit of God broke out in that Church. Hungry for the Spirit, many young people gathered in after-church meetings, and God began baptising initially, mainly young girls and women in their teens and early twenties, with the Holy Spirit. They began singing and praying spontaneously, there was shouting and rejoicing, even dancing in the meetings, and many of the girls were prophesying. By the end of the first week over 60 responded. By the end of the second week Evan had already started on a whirl-wind tour of the South Wales valleys with his team of 5 girl singers and within a year or so 100,000 converts were said to be added to the Welsh Church. This was unquestionably a Pentecostal visitation. Evan Roberts exercised spiritual gifts, including the word of knowledge, when things about someone in the congregation would be revealed, often leading to conversion. all the best urban | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | Holidays. No Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving. You can say they are pagan holidays all you want (a pathetic argument), but the fact is we have those holidays because of Christians. Independence. It was the Christian belief that God made all men equal, and gave them free will that led people to fight against tyranny, and oppression from rulers, who enslaved people. | | | | | | | | | urbandekay (6797)

| | "...is actual FACT...The Christian holidays like Easter and Christmas ARE ORIGINALLY PAGAN." Yes originally and even that is not the whole truth. The fact is that they are Christian holidays that were scheduled to take place on the same date the pagan festivals but that does not mean they are the same festival. Nor are the pagans who celebrated them the same as those people calling themselves pagan now. And Christians were oppressed by pagans long before that perversion of Christianity the Catholic Church oppressed pagans. all the best urban | | | | | | | Creditbad credit Financingbad credit fastyourtr.com | add comment | | | |

| | Often, atheists and others raise the accusation that Christianity has a negative effect on society but this is by no means true I dont know if its necessarily a belief that CHRISTIANITY itself has a negative effect....I think its more specific followers of Christianity that have the negative effect "in the name of" god and the bible etc because they've twisted and manipulated it all....I PERSONALLY have no issue with Christianity itself (or any religion for that matter)...my issue is with the fundies and narrowminded types that abuse Christianity/the bible etc (or any given religion) in order to gain power, control etc etc | | | | | | | headhunter525 (1749)

| | I kind of agree with what you said. So called Christians have abused power and oppressed people. But Christians of the kind of Jesus Bible talks about should be very much welcome. I am little wary of saying that Islam is itself good. It may be good, but I have my doubts. I need more resources to be able to say the same thing about Islam. | | | | | | | Bad Credit Lenders Free Service To Get You A Loan The Same Day. Fast & Easy. | | Quote: "Often, atheists and others raise the accusation that Christianity has a negative effect on society but this is by no means true... " This is the only thing I want to respond to. Religion in itself is a concept. It can't effect society, period. However, people acting on their beliefs CAN, and that is why both good and bad things happen in the name of religion. The true threat to society is group-think, which is prevalent among religious followers, but not exclusive to them. Atheists have a serious group-think issue going on as well. | | | | | | | urbandekay (6797)

| | Firstly, religion is not a concept but a practice and practices and indeed concepts have profound effects on society. Secondly, excessively individual thought can be as dangerous as collectivism all the best urban | | | | | | | 3 Free Credit Scores Get All 3 Credit Scores, It's Fast - Easy & Free! | | Ah! So this is where that recent quotation came from. There are a few examples similar to this worldwide. Perhaps that which is most noticable & lasting in today's society is their support of charities, op shops & various similar organizations. The Salvation Army are very much focussed in this particular aspect & have always been so. The Catholic Church private schools system is also quite a good example. If it were to be abolished there is no way that state run schools could ever cope with the extra student numbers. | | | | | | | urbandekay (6797)

| | True & likewise there are many Lutheran private schools here. However, further research on the matter shows that none of these schools would have come into being at all had it not been for initial support by way of funding, building donations, etc, etc from the Catholic Private Schools system. It may be different in England, but here the Catholic School system is by far the oldest & best established & better supported. In today's terms I should have simply used "Christian Private Schools", but I believe credit should be given where it is due, as much as I dislike to admit it. | | | | urbandekay (6797)

| | In UK there are something like 21/2 times as many Anglican as Catholic schools, I don't know but I don't believe these owe anything, in terms of origin, to the Roman Church all the best urban | | | | | | | | | Financial Planning Help Find Financial Planning Services Nearby.
