can too many herbs cause kidney failure?

I heard this the other day. A lady had to have a kidney transplant because her kidney was failing. The doctors blamed it on taking too many herbs. I didn't think that made sense. But then I thought if she was taking a lot of diuretics and not drinking enough water or something it is possible. What do you think? Can herbs cause kidney failure? (everything in modesty!)

There was a report on a guy from London last July, who apparently developed bladder cancer due to ingesting particular Chinese herbal mixtures....i.e.:
plant herbs containing a natural occurring toxic ingredient called: Aristolic Acid. (from the plant genus: Aristolochia)
They ARE used as you say, used as diuretics in the treatment of oedema.
Theses acids are nitrophenanthrene carboxlyc acid derivitives that basically come from these types of plant species, and can become toxic if taken incorrectly.
My advice?
Be safe about it, or better yet...don't take any of them at all!

I'd just trust in the more well known, or popular herbal teas.
That way I'd know for sure they'd be safe to drink.

That's what I am thinking! Thanks for the information! I don't take herbs but I drink some teas that might be considered "herbal" I think!

It's possible that herbs caused kidney failure, but it's also possible that prescription medicine caused it. As you mentioned, diuretics can be damaging. So can strong antihistamines, cortisone shots and many other things. Our bodies work together in ways we don't understand, so when we medicate ourselves, we should be very cautious, whether it's prescribed medicine or not.

She was seeing a herbalist doctor. I think it was her husband. I would think he would have known such information. I don't think she was taking any thing else. I would of course blame it on any otc meds first!

True. Hemlock and nightshade are herbs. SO is pot I suppose!
Too much of anything is not good I guess, no matter what it is!
