Is Windows 7 Going To Be another Vista? |
| |
| I jsut got a new computer with windows 7 hooked up. Right away there is a problem. It seems windows 7 is not compatible with third party software used to access & edit ftp space. Wasn't compatiblity on this issue a problem with Vista? So Microsoft straightened out a problem and then brought it right back? Anybody out there with windows 7 having this or other problems. Any advice would be appreciated. | | | | | |

| | i am using windows 7 so far so good, what kind of third party software you are trying to install?,,, there are many old software's who is not compatible with windows 7. But most of the famous software available are updated to run for windows 7. You may try to run your software in compatibility mode using XP or Xp service pack 2, on compatibility setting. | | | | | | |

| | Parts ofy iSP's software is incompatible with window7. This means that I cannot use my ftp space. My isp is Earthlink but I've learned (from the microsoft website) that this is a problem across the board. I can get on line fine and do a lot of things but this one very important function is not availabel and I'm worried that there are others. Microsoft has acknowledged this incompatibility and admits that it was once a problem with Vista. That's really upsetting. Why would they straighten out a probelm on one systeam and then turn around and build the same problem into another operating system. Also, I'm worried that this is just the tip of the iceberg although I haven't yet had other problems. I've only had the computer running a little over a week. I don't know what compatibility mode is but I'll look into it. Thanks for responding. | | | |

| | In my opinion, Win 7 is supporting almost all the softwares those were supported by XP. I like it. Also all the driver softs i used to install in XP is supporting in win 7. The problem 'd be with the software u r trying to install. Try to get a newer one of that soft. | | | | | | |

| | With any OS upgrade, there may be compatibility issues with older versions of hardware/software. Go to the website of the software in question and upgrade to latest version. | | | | | | |

| | I have the latest version. It was downloaded yesterday. They know that there is a probelm and microsoft also acknowledges it on line. The fix is complicated and cumbersome. I'll be working with microft to do what I can for now. HOWEVER, this is a probelm they had with Vista. They knew about it and came up with a fix for it and then turned right around and built the problem into another system. That's whats bothering me. | | | |

| | Thats too bad, hopefully they get a smoother fix for you soon. But for what its worth I think that Windows 7 is the best out of the box Windows that Microsoft has done. Its capabilities are astounding, and I've only had it for about a month, but I've found zero compatibilty problems so far. *knock on wood* Anyways, hope your problems get worked out, good luck! | | | |

| | I haven't upgraded to Window's 7 because there are so many programmes which don't run on it. Some versions of Windows 7 will run programmes as Window's XP if the programmes don't run on W7 (W7 starter doesn't have this capability, not sure of W7 Home has it either, but the more expensive ones do). I don't think earlier versions of Microsoft Office can run on it at all. I think this is Microsoft's idea to get people to buy upgraded programmes. I had a scanner which worked fine until I changed to a computer with XP, which the makers refused to support, so I bought another one from a different company. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Eskimo. Haven't talked to you in awhile. Good to hear from you. You're right, they really know how to build in the obsolesence. The thing that really ticks me herre is that this was a problem that they fixed in Vista and then they turned around and built it right into the new operating system. i'm sure there is a method to this madness and its probably some attempt to get more money from people. | | | |

| | If your ftp space is not accessible with your ISP ftp client in Windows 7, have you try to access it with a web based ftp client ? Just open your favorite search engine and look for "ftp web interface", you'll find a lot of websites ; some of them are providing all the basics ftp commands needed to upload, download, zip/unzip files, etc. | | | | | | |

| | I have files on my Earthlink ftp space that I neeed to access and edit but I can't. I think I found a fix on line that might help. I'm going to try it tonite. But I'm still upset that I can't use the isp software to just access it and the tech service is so bad at earthlink right now (used to be good but is now terrible) that I doubt they will ever come up with a solution. Also, I'm worried that I will find other problems with Windows 7. I've only had the computer up and running for a week and there is alread what for me is a major problem. | | | |

| | I don't know much about windows seven, but maybe it couldn't hurt to try and update things a bit. Maybe you should try a newer more updated version of the computer. Not all programs are going to be perfect despite the claims made by Microsoft. | | | | | | |

| | The computer is brand new. Dell just built it for me and delivered it a few weeks ago. Windows 7 is the latest Windows operating system. I can't update it. It's already the newest. | | | |

| | I don't personally have Windows 7 yet but I really want to get it if I don't get a Mac. I have a few friends who have it and have experienced no problems with it at all. A lot of people claim it's the best Windows yet, however not enough time has gone by yet. It's looking like it's going to be even better than XP was for it's time. Happy Mylotting! | | | | | | |

| | I hope you're right but you can't prove it by me right now. I actually considered getting a Mac instead of this Dell. | | | |

| | Thanks for the link. It win't help me access anything I have on the old site but at least I'll have something I can use to transfer files and put pictures on the web. Lord knows how long it will take to get the issues between Windows 7 and Earthlink ironed out. In fact, I don't think Earthlink wants to ever get it straight. All the little techies ( more like sales people than technicians tothese days) at Earthlink tried to get me to buy website space. All I want is some ftp space. Since I don't really need a lot of bells and whistles, this might do the trick. Thanks again. | | | |

| | FileZilla will allow you to access files on an FTP server as well as transfer them to it. As long as you have the server settings, you should be able to access everything with no problems. I know exactly what you mean about Earthlink. I used to have dial-up service through them, and when I called to cancel the service because we were moving, the tech kept on trying to get me to upgrade to DSL. Good for you to decline the service--I just took a look at their starter package, and holy cow can we say outrageously expensive? For $19.95 a month after the 3-month introductory period, they give you 5GB of space, 20GB of bandwidth, and they'll be very helpful and bill you automatically for any extra bandwidth your site uses... at a rate of 2 cents per megabyte! Compare that to my current plan from GoDaddy... I pay $6.99 per month for their Deluxe hosting package on a Linux server, and I get 150GB of space, 1500GB of bandwidth, and I can use any and all of my domain names with it. It's pretty user friendly, plus they have 24/7 tech support. | | | |
