Yellow Pages - are they essential or not? |
| |
| According to the Local Government Association, unwanted phone books create 75,000 tons of waste paper a year. http://www.dailymail.co.u... Do you think that yellow pages are essential in today's world where most people use the internet to check for a telephone number? | | | | | |

| | I guess that trends change. People are more using the net than the yellow pages or telephone directories. | | | |

| | I read that article in another paper. It's not just Yellow Pages but the domestic directories as well. I have to say that I cannot remember the last time that I looked something up in Yellow Pages. Personally I could live without them. I can access all that I need from the internet. But for older non IT literate folk then I see a continuing need. | | | | | | |

| | Same for me. I prefer to use the internet to search for something than checking with the yellow pages. But as many have said in this thread, the older generation still seem to use it. | | | |

| | I think the yellow pages have a few more years of life in them, because we still have an older generation who doesn't use the internet. But, I can see an end to the yellow pages in the next decade (or possibly two). By the way, I still use the yellow pages, because not all businesses have an internet presence. | | | | | | |

| | Maybe it would be phased out in a decade or two as you have suggested. The younger generation seems more technology oriented that the older one for sure. | | | |

| | That is a good point. I still know of many businesses that aren't on the internet. No website, no phone number, nothing. | | | |

| | Hi ronaldinu, Yes, I think it is essential still to some people, although the internet is here but there are some people who don't have internet and what about the older generation who don't know how to use the computer? I myself had only just learnt how to use it last year and was so afraid of the thing, also I have couple of friends still have not got a computer and don't know how to use it, so I think Yellow pages should be on going thing and we do need it, I use it all the time. | | I think they are still essential. there are a lot of people out there who do not have computers either because they can not afford them, or because they choose not to own one. My mother and sister are not interested in computers. My grandparents are of a religion where they don't believe in a lot of modern technology. A lot of seniors don't want to get into technology A lot of people don't yet know how to look for numbers on the internet. My American husband was not yet familliar with Canadian phone number lookups until I told him about them. One day when he came up here, he saw the phone book under my couch, and went right to it, when he needed a number. As for myself, I am thinking of starting a business. Knowing that there are still people uninterested in the internet, I will gladly advertize it in the Yellow Pages. also, people with fire places can burn unusuaed phonebooks as opposed to putting them in landfills. Also, they can be sent to recycling centres, to be made into new phonebooks, so that new trees won't be killed. | | | | | | |

| | You've got a very valid point. Not all people are internet friendly. | | | |

| | 5 years ago, I put an ad in the yellow pages and I'm still getting calls and emails from it. I only did it that one year. It cost me $500 and I made 500 tutoring. So I didn't renew it. Apparently the phone books aren't ending up in landfills up here! I personally have a stack of 6 phone books with my dried flowers in them. | | | | | | |

| | For 2 weeks every year, after the new phone books come out, we have recycling of the old phone books. So instead of going to landfills, maybe people should find ways to recycle them. Not everyone has the internet. Many of my relatives can't afford it. You can search the internet, but if you want a local contractor, you may have to search through ones that aren't local. | | | |

| | If they were recycled it would be better for the environment. Yes not all of us are internet users. For example these yellow pages are really useful to my parents who don;t know what internet is all about. | | | |

| | i'm on the fence about this one. seriously, when i was the kid, i had so much fun looking up for random numbers to dial in the yellow pages to do prank calls. immature yes but so much fun at such at innocent age. lol! of course, right now i've already discontinued receiving yellow pages. i'm a pldt subscriber (it's one of the local telecom companies here in manila) so i get one local directory for residential numbers and another one for business establishments. i think the yellow pages will stick around for a coupel more years since not everyone has access to the internet, both advertisers and consumers. with regards to the paper wastage issue, i think these same yellow pages are recycled and it lessens paper consumption. i remember the past coupel of years, the yellow pages that i got were made from recycled paper so i guess the companies printing these stuff are doing their share in conserving the environment. however, i work in a paperless office so i can see where all of the fuss is coming from about paper wastage. i'm guessing we see the yellow pages for a couple of more years and eventually it gets phased out. | | | | | | |

| | That is alot of wasted paper, maybe it should be on a give to only when asked for thing..so that it isn't given to those that don't want it and end up just tossing it out. Just like with some newspapers. They are just read and tossed and some aren't even read before they are tossed. same way with some books. | | | | | | |

| | That is certainly a waste in paper and print! I don't make much use of it as I prefer to search online for whatever I need. | | | |

| | there are still a lot of people using the yellow pages. those people could be those who have no internet or just wants to use the yellow pages because it is already there when they need it. but if yellow pages will be stopped, i think there are lots of trees that will be saved because paper production will get less. | | | | | | |

| | I think that they should be distributed by order. There are a lot of people that depend on the internet now for phone numbers and locations. I hardly ever use a phone book anymore but I still get one every year. It would definitely save on paper if they give them by request. | | | | | | |

| | Your's is a wise suggestion. I don't know why they dont call or send an application in order to request it. | | | |
