Do you think a teen is old enough to choose his own religion |
| |
| Teenagers, want the ability to make their own choices, however some parents feel that they are much to young to make a responsible choice about religion. However I disagree, I think at about 16 or so the child is ready to make an informed decision on what religion they will choose, and should be given the opportunity to explore it independantly of his or her parents. This may sound strange from a Christian Pastor, however when God gave us free will, he also gave us the ability to choose our religion, but he did not want you to simply come, he wanted you to study the word of God, question those teaching it, and to on your own come to the conclusion that you should and will follow God or not. Therefore I think that the process starts as a teen and throughout adulthood, learning about religion, or choosing no religion. While I would hope that the child would make the right choice, for my own children I gave them the choice because if I chose for them, then this would not be the same as giving their life to Christ because they believed and trusted in him unconditionally, it would be because I told them to. What do you think of this? | | | | | |

| | Personally, I think many people are forced into religion by being made, as children, to attend Church whether they want to or not. If you really want a child to make their own choice, don't let them go to church until they are old enough to really understand what it is. THEN let them make their own decision. | | | | | | |

| | I dont think so I think the child should go to church with his or her parents till they are at an age to be able to make an informed decision. At which point he or she should be allowed to explore different religions without interferance from his or her parents. | | | |

| | Well, that is where I disagree, because you are already influencing the child with the Christian religion, therefore not allowing the child an unbiased choice. | | | |

| | There is no unbiased choice here, if a child is bought up outside a religious practice it is almost certainly bought up an atheist. all the best urban | | | |

| | WTF ever urban...you aren't as smart as you want to be. I never said a damn thing about telling the kid there was no God. | | | |

| | It's you not being so smart here, a person never exposed to religion need never have been told there is no God but will probably be an atheist, Do you perhaps mean give the child some vague description of God and what religion is? That's still not neutral, religion cannot be understood in the abstract as if it were some theory. all the best urban | | | |

| | Urban, until a child is at an age where they are able to understand God he or she is under the law of his home, that is what I believe, therefore my children will go to Christian Church. However, when they are old enough to choose I will allow them (which is what I have done for my older children who are Christian, Christian, Muslim, Christian Scientist) to explore all different religions and they do so without my input (unless they ask me for it) but not my opinion. I love my children and like my father before me (who is Muslim) I believe that a child should have the choice of religion, they should hear all sides, and while I may not agree with their choices I will be their mother and that is it. My sister is Wiccan, I dont love her less, while I am adamant that her belief not be practiced in my home, I would never stop her or put her down for hers. I do however wish one day that all of them find Jesus which is my right, however I dont force them too. If the child makes the choice, then they put their whole heart into it. | | | |

| | I think the real moment of truth is the marriage, when the futur parents must decide which education, which culture, which religion they will give their children. That subject is a nightmare for Jewish families living out of Israel. Contrarely to the Muslims who write that the women is a creature from the devil, in Jewish law, the mother is more important that the father. In case of mixed mariage, if the mother is Jewish the child will be Jewish. If the father is Jewish, but the mother is not, the child will be not Jewish and if he want to belong to the Jewish people he will have to convert. At the end of the 19th century, lots of Jews arrived in the US because of the Pogroms in Russia. Before the WWII there was close to 8 million Jews in the US, now only 4 million. Why ? Because of the assimilation, Jews married Christian wifes, and the children are not Jewish. Some Rabbis call it the Spiritual Holocaust. Of course in Israel the probability to have marriage between Jews and Muslims exists but it very little. One of the reason why American Jews emigrate to Israel is to be sure to give a Jewish education to their children, and also that their grand children will stay Jewish. | | | | | | |

| | I applaud you on being able to allow your children to make the religious choice on their own. I don't think I've ever met a Pastor that could think outside the box of tradition. Do you extend that to the children of your congregation? How do the parents take that? My family is rather a mixed bag. I was baptized Catholic, converted to Lutheranism and now I am Wiccan. My son and daughter were baptized Lutheran, at 4 and 5 years of age. Both made the their first Communion as Lutheran's. My son later went and had himself Confirmed as a Methodist. My husband was raised Espiscopalian. I had decided that I was going to let my children know about all the different religions before they wanted to make a commitment to any of the religions. | | | | | | |

| | I tell the parents the same thing, they do take that advise and the children end up choosing Christianity anyway, but they are not regreting it. Instead they have a better understanding of other religions and they know why they chose Christianity, however I do get beat up about it from other Pastors some time. | | | |

| | Thats good its better let them choose while guiding them to GOD. You have point that God give us free will to choose like us parents we should be doing the same thing to our children. We trust God that he knows what to do for us and especially for our kids.Keep it up. God bless your family | | | | | | |

| | If a teenager can already make wise decision inspite of the age, then he can be free of choosing his own religion. I don't see any problem with that but most the time we are still influence by the people around us like our parents and friends. | | | | | | |

| | The thing is that I think they should hear about the Christian religion, I just think they should be introduced to other religions as well so that they can make an informed decision. | | | |

| | I helped raise 4 good boys, who grew up never having any problems with the law. I never took them to Church or Sunday School, and they never missed it as far as I know. Whenever they asked about Religion, I told them the God's Honest Truth, as far as I knew it. My boys always had free will, and they used it exceptionally well in all instances. I am extremely proud of them all! (Incidentally none of my Family attends Church or has ever Joined an Organized Religion of any kind!) | | | | | | |
