Thomas Jefferson. Erased. |
| |
| My lovely state of Texas has just voted to remove references of Thomas Jefferson and replace him with religious idol John Calvin, and St. Thomas Acquinas. So, apparently the separation of church and state is gone. The reason Jefferson was removed is because he opposed church and state mingling together. Here is a list of other things removed: - The word "democracy". Replaced with "constitutional republic" - Transvestites, transexuals, and other things republicans don't like. - The word "capitalism". Replaced with "free enterprise" | | | | | |

| | Oh dear..... Yes, let's remove references to one of the first presidents, one who helped create the country as we know it today... This is such a terrible idea. Thankfully, my state has too much pride in Jefferson to ever do this, although our school planners did list Martin Luther King Day as "Lee-Jackson-King" Day. :/ We are a democratic republic with a constitution... they're just a little off, there. | | | | | | |

| | Sorry, i didn't mention. School books. But since Texas is one of the three "major" states, textbook companies tend to cater to what they want. | | | |

| | Hi MisterKhalil! Welcome to myLot and thank you for mentioning this topic! I used to believe growing up, that history was supposed to be based on factual truth. How innocent I was! I am aware of the problem with which you speak and have had a few discussions about it online elsewhere. I had complained that as a white child growing up in the US (not all of my childhood was spent in the US however)that I hadn't realized until I was grown how very little I had been taught about black history. I wasn't "allowed" to know more about many famous and good black people who have contributed to our country as a whole. That was due to the "powers that be" from the generation in which I grew up and the nature of racism in this country at the time. Their choices became the "truth" about black Americans. I find it frightening that a small group of people, many of whom have no professional educational background, can easily choose to wipe out extremely important information about our country's factual history simply because it doesn't fit in with that particular group's ideologies. It's wrong! It shouldn't be allowed to happen and I'd like to know how to stop it! Their "truths"--factual or not, will become the "truths" for generations to come. Do we really want to allow that to happen?! | | | | | | |

| | This is an outrage! What's worse is that I just watched 2 hours of "the news" and saw no mention of it. If Thomas Jefferson isn't central to US History, who is? Tell me that someone is fighting this or that the ACLU has filed a lawsuit against it. | | | | | | |

| | "He who controls the past controls the future, and he who controls the present controls the past." - George Orwell, 1984 Ah, Texas, the biggest, most barbaric, most backward state in the Union. The buckle of the bible belt. Hmmm I seem to be having a bit of a 'B' thing here; when really, these aspiring theocrats should be given an F- at the most. And remember, this isn't something new, the religious right have been working hard at this for many years now. Their intentions are nothing less than to drive a holy roller bulldozer through the 'wall of separation' between church and state. They are literally 're-writing history' - as even a Republican member of the Texas Education Board remarked. They are determined to wipe out the true origins of your Republic and replace them with an all pervading Christian Fundamentalist theology. In their twisted, narrow little minds, your country was founded as a Christian nation; when nothing could be further from the truth. Your presidents #2 through to #6 were deists and unitarians. Washington was only a member of the Anglican Church because that was a requirement for all serving officers in the British army at that time. Your founding fathers were not only fleeing from the tyranny of the British Empire but from the unholy alliance of church and state which dominated Europe. These were men of The Enlightenment, not the dark ages of the Inquisition. These are the same people who are trying to re-write the Bible by removing all references to anything remotely 'socialist' sounding, in the teachings of Jesus Christ; and replacing them with free market, capitalist ideology. Perhaps the reason they've targeted Jefferson - probably the greatest American ever - is because of the 'Jefferson Bible'. I don't think that goes down too well with them, no, not at all well. And who is currently leading this vanguard of Christian Soldiers as they threaten to turn your country's history on it's head by indoctrinating your children with their religious beliefs and political ideology? Don McLeroy, a dentist from Bryan, Texas, who still thinks that the world was created in the space of a week, 10-12,000 years ago. Wonder what he thinks about the oil which made the petrol in his car, or did god make that in a couple of seconds on Wednesday afternoon? His way of assessing what should go into school history books: "The way I evaluate history textbooks is first I see how they cover Christianity and Israel. Then I see how they treat Ronald Reagan - he needs to get credit for saving the world from communism and for the good economy over the last twenty years because he lowered taxes." This could be your future America. Be scared, be very scared. How scared? Take a look at Iran, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. One theocracy is no better than any other. | | | | | | |

| | I'm a Canadian (Wintertexan) who lives in Canada for 7 months in the summer and in Texas for 5 months in the winter. I own a house in McAllen (In the Rio Grande valley). I've lived in TX for 10 winters, and its been educational. In many respects its like 30 years ago in Canada. People drive without car insurance, very few wear a helmet on their motorcycles, people wear guns, and a great number of public figures, including Priests and Pastors, are crooked. The police drive around in fancy vehicles they have previously confiscated from drug traffickers. Its ok to tow a car on the freeway, and the freeway is closed if there is a chance of freezing rain. Wine and beer is sold in grocery stores, but not on Sunday mornings. There is more Spanish than English spoken, but all cashiers in public places are bilingual. All this being said, I enjoy living in TX in the winter. Being able to go swimming every day in an outdoor pool does wonders for the Wintertexan! | | | | | | |
