What's your process for editing?

Whether it be for articles, short stories, or novels, what's your process for editing? What do you find the most effective in polishing your work? Have you got any tips for the other writers here? I do mainly short story and novel writing. I find the most effective process for me is to finish the manuscript first and bother with editing later (Much later, actually.). I set it aside for awhile and then come back to it with a fresh mind. Once you've seperated yourself from your work, you're able to clearly see what needs improvement and what's fine the way it is.

I have been told that I am a good editor. It is always harder to edit your own work because we tend to read what we intended and can miss mistakes. (especially little things like from or form!) I always write and then let it sit for awhile. If I can I let it sit at least a day before I go back and read it. It gives me some time for it to leave my mind for a bit. That's usually when I catch all the "duh!" mistakes!

I always go back and edit my articles much later.

that is true. when the idea for a particular piece comes in mind, i usually write everything first. and when it's done, editing comes at night or the following day... ^_^
