Who Was the Last Great President of the U. S.?  email this discussion to a friend?

Personally, I believe it was Harry S. Truman, a common man with common sense. He made some extremely difficult decisions in extremely difficult times. Who do think was the last great president? Kennedy? Johnson? Nixon? Ford? Carter? Reagan? Bush? Clinton? Bush? Obama? Or was it earlier than that? Washington, Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, Wilson, F. Roosevelt?

Personally I believe it was President George Washington because soon afterward each following President learned what lying to the People meant & used this tool as often as they could. All Presidents since then have perfected it. ..... 'nough said.

I honestly think Ronald Regan was the best President for the united states, before it would be Franklin Roosevelt ...
They just made America a shining country and then later on the following presidents made the country to be the no 1 country in the world..

It's actually pretty funny that you chose Truman. Are you familiar with Truman's "Fair Deal" legislation? There were many parts to it but Truman is credited with establishing the call for universal health care, which lead to the creation of Medicare under Lyndon Johnson. The Fair Deal faced a lot of opposition from the many conservative politicians who wanted a reduced role of the federal government. Sound familiar?

myLot reputation of 97/100. hofferp (2894)   ranked 23 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Yes, it sounds familiar. I didn't say I liked everything about Truman, but thank you for your opinion.

I would have to say Reagan. He is the first President that I can really remember. He had the ability to rally as a country and had plenty of issues to walk into. He also had a very strong International presence and did great with the cold war.
I am also a big fan of Thomas Jefferson, I agree with a lot of his views and principals. He lowered taxes and stopped the importation of slaves. He was not perfect, he actually passed a bill that excluded blacks from carrying the mail.
I also like how George Washington refused a life time appointment to the presidency, can you imagine Obama doing that? LMFAO

I think its likely that Mr Obama will go down as one of the Greatest Ever if not The Greatest, and I am sure Muhammad Ali wouldnt mind Mr Obama having that title in his particular field.
But Obama hasnt really done anything yet to justify it although him getting his Health Bill through might be seen as a great step forward, but not by all obviously.
McCain looked lamentable and pitiful tonight as he spoke in the wake of his Party,s defeat on this issue and America should be glasd they never voted for him.

I would hate to think that the person I chose would be the last great president, but saying that he is the last, it would be Ronald Reagan. I do like Harry Truman, but I think Reagan was better.

He was a little before my time (not much) but my vote for greatest goes to FDR. He also liked Truman. He handpicked him for VP when he knew he wouldn't live to serve out his final term. That was Franklin D's final legacy. He didn't allow himself to be followed by a weakling as so many great leaders do.

In my family, we have a lot of admiration for the President Truman. All my family run away from the Naziz, and my parents were born in Shanghai, China. After Pearl Harbor, the Japs sent all my family in the Concentration Camps of Lungwah. Three members of my family died there. So much for Japanese Culture. When President Truman took the decision to use the Nuclear Weapon in Hiroshima and Nagazaki, he not only saved my family, but also the live of millions soldiers and officers who didn't have to invade Japan. After the glorious American Army liberated the Concentration Camp, the Communists won the civil war in China and confiscated all our real estate. WE had to leave China, because of the War of Corea, because the General Chief of Staff, the famous General Mac Arthur, wanted to use Nuclear Weapons against Noth Corea and China. Mac Arthur was fired by President Truman, because at that time the USSR of Stalin had already Nuclear Weapons.
And also the President Truman was the first to recognize the State of Israel.

After President Truman, we love President Bush senior and junior.
When Carter was President, 72 American hostages were humiliated in Teheran by the young guards of the Islamic Revolution. The chief of the CIA, Georges Bush senior, an hero in the WWII against the Japs, was really a genius. He met in Paris the President of Iran Bani Sadr, and gave him $ 200 millions SO THAT THE HOSTAGES WERE LIBERATED AFTER THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS AND NOT BEFORE WHEN CARTER WAS PRESIDENT. And that helped a lot for the election of Ronald Reagan, I think.
The two President Bush had the courage to defeat that dangerous and crazy dictator Saddam Hussein. I read on the site of Achmaninedjad that he made an historical visit in Bagdad, after the cruel war Iraq-Iran which made millions of victims and was started by Saddam. Achmadinadjad said Iraq is much better without the dictator Saddam Hussein. Yes, even the Muslims think that the two President Bush did a VERY GOOD job in Iraq.

Grover Cleveland, heck he was a Democrat so no one can say I just hate Democrats. He reduced the number of federal employee's abandoned the spoil system for Presidential appointees. As to federal spending and appropriations he said the following,
I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood.
He opposed tariffs, and was a non-interventionist.
